I've never filed my federal tax online. I've been attempting all day to do it. I created an online e-file account with H&R block, got logged in, finished the info to submit with bank routing number and all. For the 2010 return I opted to apply my 2010 overpayment to the 2011 tax. They system would not allow for this. The only option was to refund, so after all failed I tried for that, submitting all bank info etc. After many attempts that failed.
Midnight is fast approaching. Any suggestions, anyone. Any other way to do this than e-file? Thanks

I believe you can e-file for an extension (I did this one year via TaxAct, and I suspect H&R should be the same.) For that matter, I was about two days late in filing an extension last year by mail and it never seemed to matter, though I'm basically a tax nobody.
Unfortunately the extension only extends your time to file, not your time to pay. But it sounds like you've paid at least something, since you put your 2010 refund towards your 2011 tax. So you can probably get away with an extension. That's Form 4868:
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4868.pdf In regards to the e-file failures you're having, what's going on? Is the H&R system not filing, or is the IRS rejecting your return? That should give you some guidance in regards to what's wrong with your return. Also remember that you only have to have the forms postmarked by April 17th; they don't have to actually mail out on the 17th. And frankly I've never heard of anybody getting hammered because they were a couple of days late on their taxes. If you file by mail it's going to be weeks or months before the envelope even gets opened. Whether the IRS gets up your ass about it depends, largely, on how much you owe them. If you anticipate a refund, or that your tax was just about paid with last year's refund, then there's probably no need to sweat. If you anticipate a large tax liability then the IRS is going to come sniffing after you. AbE: If the issue you're having really is related to the fact that you pre-paid your 2011 tax with 2010's refund, but you can't find where to put that into H&R Block, the line I think you should be looking for is the one that asks you if you've prepaid any of your 2011 tax. H&R won't know about last year's refund even if you did your taxes through them last year; every year is a new tax software product because of the tax code changes that happen every year. You'll have to manually specify that you've already pre-paid some of your 2011 tax by the amount of last year's refund; look it up on last year's 1040, which you've either saved, or H&R might have it archived if you've done your taxes through them in the past. Why use H&R Block? Because they are a brand name ripoff?
I have used FreeTaxUSA for years and never had a problem, 1040 done in 15 minutes (can't use 1040A due to additional income sources). The daughter had to file for the first time ever, used what I do, done in 10 minutes. Site always asks the right questions at the right points, including asking about prepayment. There is more to life than brand names, you know, and there are dozens, if not hundreds, of free filing sites. As an informed consumer, my advice is to open your mind to other possibilities. I have in the past, filed taxes for a dozen people in the army, parents, friends, etc. Have had to do schedule As, Cs, uncountable additional forms. All without professional training, just an ability to read and do simple math. To me, I just don't understand why it is so intimidating to so many. The tax code is stupid, yes, but intimidating? It seems we have people who can perform a Laplace transform, engage in the most delicate surgery, read and claim to understand Kant, indeed even read the Bible cover to cover and claim to understand it to the point they feel qualified to speak for God, yet three simple letters turn them into quivering little balls of fear. Sure, you may need accountants and lawyers, if one is hiding income like the average Republican congressman hides himself and his family from military service, but if you are not intending to skirt any laws, what's the problem?Read not to contradict and confute, not to believe and take for granted, not to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider. - Francis Bacon

Yeah, my last post was harsh. But then again, why did you wait until the last day Buz? Seems like begging for server crash city to me.
Just file for an extension, Crash gave you some good advice, day late probably will go unnoticed. At most 10% fine for unpaid if filed in six months. Pardon me for going off, am in Houston preparing for what is going to be some very delicate negotiations with some very powerful interests at the local level. By comparison, IRS and Laplace are simple. Just dropped by to see what was happening while relaxing, and can't seem to shut up and let go. Not meaning to rub it in, but we filed ours last month, and we thought we were hitting it close there.

I believe the April 15th (17th) deadline is only significant if you owe the government money. If you have a refund coming, no big deal.
For the 2010 tax year, I had a refund coming. I kept on procrastinating doing the final copy (1040 EZ, which takes maybe about 10 minutes to fill out). I finally mailed it in a couple of days before Christmas 2011. They found an error I made (d'oh) and sent me an extra ~$350. I'm a slow Moose

Every year, we pay an accountant $60 to do our taxes for us. $60 is nothing compared to the service they do to us.
I don't understand why not more people go to accountants.

Why don't you ask Dr Dino to help you? Remember, he's a creationist and a good Christian. He should be able to give you some sound advice in how to and how not to deal with the IRS.
Just never renounce your US citizenship when dealing with the IRS like he tried to do. No other country will take people like old Kent in!

Do we have to be dicks? He's asking for help.
Taxes are actually pretty hard if you're in any way an outlier; this was probably the last year I was able to do taxes on my own. At this point, my wife is active-duty military, officially a resident of Wisconsin who lives in Maryland; I'm now a Maryland resident who has self-employment income from a consulting gig in Virginia. It's not so much a function of what we owe, but to whom. With the AMT creeping up on increasing numbers of people, a lot of people now have to do their taxes twice. And, you know, if you're not taking advantage of every legal tax rebate and deduction, that's just money out of your pocket. I don't think you have to be an arch conservative not to want to give the gummint more than your fair share, not with Romney and GE paying basically nothing.

In the world of Kent and Buzz the only "evidence" that can be used in court would be the Protestant Bible. Nothing else.
The moment the IRS produces a bank statement on old Buzz's income and expenses, lots of websites would appear claiming "proof" of "discrimination against Christians, therefore evolution is wrong."

Thanks folks, for your input. I owe no taxes so I procrastinated, intending to file online via E-file when it was due. Yesterday AM I created a free E-file account with H&R Block and logged in.
Everything went well all the way to when I was adked if I wanted to apply my 2010 overpayment to my 2011 estimated payments for the 2012 tax year. I opted to apply it and stated the amount. All the system allowed my to do was to have it refunded. No matter what I did I was not able to apply, so in orter to get it done I entered my bank routing number, etc, opting to have it direct deposited into my bank. The system ignored my stated amount. Instead it came up with an amount much larger. There was no way I could change it, so I decided to go ahead and go with it. When I tried to submit, red messages came up that some of the data may be problematic. There was an option to ignore or go ahead. I opted to ignore, but when the submit attempt came up, the same thing happened that the amounts did not match. By that time it was two hours before midnight so I decided to do anything, whether wrong or not to get filed. Nothing worked. I called a friend who had recently retired from H&R Block where he had been doing onlines for years. I explained my problem to him. He said he didn't know what to do since he had never encountered my problem. Mext I skiped a question to IRS's live online people who you could talk to. After a half hour wait I finally got one. I explained my problem but she said she didn't know, so sent my question to another agent which was to take longer than 30 minutes. I left it going while searching for some other way to get filed. An hour before deadline I decided to file for an extension on line. I logged back into E-file but nothing I did allowed for that. I Googled my problem and went to the iRS website to find out how to extend. All they did was send me back to E-file. Since nothing I tried worked I shut down at midnight and went to bed ufiled. Question: What to do now?

Hi Buz,
Print out this form, fill it out, mail it in - they won't care that you're late since you owe no taxes:
Do that today. After that you can take your time filing. --Percy AbE: PS: Never, ever, give the government money you don't yet owe them!!! Edited by Percy, : AbE

Do we have to be dicks? We could look at this two ways 1: Buz is about one of the most unpleasant members on this site in terms of having a reasonable, rational discussion with, let alone a debate, and thus is deserving of the chide and derision. 2: We could take the high road and forgive him for being a grumpy curmudgeon that takes a holier than thou attitude with every breath and treat him with human respect that we as humanists normally would. We could assist him, knowing full well that it will likely never be reciprocated. I say nay, since he treats most everyone of us with disrespect as member Buzsaw and it is forum member Buzsaw that is asking for help, not the guy who IS Buzsaw (ok, ok, so he doesn't file taxes as member Buzsaw, but you get the point), he's kinda asking for it. My advice to Buz? Pray to your god jehovah for help with your taxes. But that's only because I openly admit to being an asshole. Question: What to do now? my guess would be to pay the fine for not filing a tax report. You could try calling someone at the IRS and explain your problem and hope they help you, i was once lucky when i forgot to do my taxes and the lady from the tax office called me and we filled them together about 20 days after the deadline.
