I am thinking that this might (hopefully) require only a small change in the code, but how about being able to cycle through different acknowledgement messages?
Currently, we see these messages:
Panda has responded
Panda has not responded
Panda has acknowledged this reply

The first one is set if an actual response is posted.
But the bottom 2 are toggled.
Would it be possible to 'cycle' rather than 'toggle'?
Suggested additional messages:
Panda agrees completely with this reply
Panda thinks this reply is very witty (I chose 'witty' to prevent this reply being an insult.)
Panda likes this reply
I think the responses should not be able to be construed as insults.
I also think you should not have a 'Panda disagrees with this reply' type message. If you disagree: then you should explain why.
I remember reading somewhere that you were thinking of adding smilies to the acknowledgement, but maybe this would be easier to implement?
Hopefully someone can suggest more (and better) default remarks.
Ideas? Comments? Insults? Nobel Prize nominations?

This is a timely comment because I'm currently working on a replacement for the message rating system, see Message 138. You'll be able to use this system to indicate your feelings about a message, whether it's a reply to you or not.
About toggling through acknowledgement notes and using text instead of smilies, that's an idea worth considering, I'll keep it in mind when I get around to implementing it.

Hi Percy,
Message 1: Would it be possible to 'cycle' rather than 'toggle'?
Suggested additional messages:
Panda agrees completely with this reply
Panda thinks this reply is very witty (I chose 'witty' to prevent this reply being an insult.)

I think the responses should not be able to be construed as insults.
I also think you should not have a 'Panda disagrees with this reply' type message. If you disagree: then you should explain why.
Now that we have the (+) (-) buttons to show likes and dislikes, I was thinking about a similar toggle system to what Panda proposed.
The problem I have with the current system is that "acknowledging this reply" carries a connotation of at least partial agreement with it, while there are replies that just are not worth any response
I think the categories should be something more like
  • Percy agrees with this reply
  • Percy feels no further response is necessary
  • Percy feels further response will not be productive
These can, of course, be augmented by the use of the (+) (-) buttons to show likes and dislikes,
It may also be interesting to have a button for the sender
  • no response is necessary

that turns off the reply field toggle
Enjoy.

I agree with this as sometimes I feel as though "acknowledging" certain replies gives the impression that one doesn't have the ability to rebut a certain post, as opposed to not wishing to continue that line of discussion.
