I've had a stammer for my whole life. Just recently I've been on the McGuire course that has all but cured me of it.
As you can imagine I'm totally stoked that I can order food in restaurants, even say my full name for the first time ever.
Just wanted to share with you guys.

That's awesome, Larni.
I have a friend with the same issue. I'm not sure what type of speech therapy he's gone through, but I know it's ongoing for him. He's one of the most thoughtful, insightful people I know, and it just pains me when he's got something he'd like to say...but just can't get it to come out right. He's told me it's frustrating, but I don't think anyone can really know how frustrating it can be, without experiencing it themselves.
He often rails about people who, when he's having a hard time getting a phrase to come, attempt to finish his thought with either what they think he'd like to have said or what they themselves would have said in his position.
He says listeners should simply keep their mouths shut and wait patiently instead. It'll come out sooner or later.
Congrats, and have a good one.

It was very tough.
55 hours over 3.5 days.
We had to practice costal breathing for hours and then go out into the town to deliberately stammer in front randoms to reduce our anxiety around talking (by exposure).
We also moderate our speech pattern so it is tightly controlled.
All in all it was like an intensive driving course; very strict.
For the finale we had to do public speaking by standing on a soap box in the middle of Wigan and telling over 150 (not all sympathetic) towns people how much we (a 30+ cohort) had improved.
At the start all of us could not day our full name on demand. Now we all can.
Fantastic.

From what I understand of the program you need to keep in practice and do the exercises daily to avoid relapse. Keep it up.
And I was serious about Toastmasters. Look them up. In a few years you will become a confident, flawless public speaker able to wax poetic extemporaneously. The ego boost is tremendous.

Nice One!
Nice one man, I'm made up for you. Like Paul says, keep up the practise and you'll keep improving. I know a couple of people who used to stutter badly, but they've totally overcome it. In time your technique will become second nature until you reach the point where you'll hardly remember what it was like to have a problem in the first place.

Fantastic! That's great to hear.
I notice that people who stutter mostly do that in an environment where they're going to be self-conscious about it. Kind of like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Being so nervous that you're going to stammer, that you end up stammering.
My professor for my entrepreneurship course stammers. The first 2 days of class he did it a lot. But I noticed that once he was more comfortable around us and knew we weren't go to judge him, he's pretty much stopped completely.
So what is this McGuire course all about?

It is a course that teaches you how to consciously breath and time your speaking just right to greatly improve fluency.
You're bang on with the self fulfilling prophesy angle; we had to go into town and deliberately stammer to show that we could exercise control over our speech.
It also uses an eclectic mix of cbt, sports psychology and vocal coaching to do the job.
