Author | Topic: Use of Subtitles in Topics | |||||||||||||||||||||||

People, the proper use of subtitles can be useful.
For example: I while back I was looking for a specific message in a topic I thought it was located in. I looked throught the subtitles in the topic index, but they were of no help. Quite a while back, I posted a "topic drift alert", with a subtitle (as I recall) of something like "Terminally Off Topic?". Ironicly, there was an on-topic reply to that message, which generated a string of on-topic messages with the subtitle of "Re: Terminally Off Topic?". Bottom line: What do you say, that you try putting useful subtitles on your messages? Just like a quality functional topic title, quality functional subtitles could be useful for guiding and organizing the discussion. See previous message.
I have just noticed that there are many "Re: Ted Bundy" subtitled messages in the "For those concerned with Free Speech (or Porn), it is time to get active." topic, the current most recent being message 209. I traced it back a ways without finding anything to do with Ted Bundy. New subtitles can be a good thing. Adminnemooseus

This really is a good idea. How about taking a moment to look at the sub titles?

Instead of having an automatic addition of 'Re:' to every subtitle, why not just have an automatic blank subtitle input bar, take away the '(optional)' label, and make it mandatory for post submitter to input the subtitle in order to submit the post?
The bottom line is most people, including myself, will not adhere to anything unless being forced upon. Remember B UL LS HI T? This message has been edited by GAW-Snow, 07-05-2005 04:33 PM

Very few posters are even glancing at the subtitles of their posts. Please help make things a bit easier and use the subtitles more carefully.
Basically try to make them the core subject of the post. Treat them as something like chapter headings.

Can we have a POTM for best sub-title? Or go the hog and have an Oscar type list?
Best sub-title in a category not including religion or science, goes to----

What does this sub-title have to do with good sub-titles.

I read and saw the premise, Moose! Im with ya!
A good subtitle reframes the issue and steers the topic towards a hopefully sane conclusion!

I'm not an admin, so I feel slightly self conscious for pointing this out, but I've noticed that Subtitles have gone a bit pear shaped again recently. I use subtitles on the All Topics page to see if a thread is looking interesting or not.
Pars' ID test thread, which has spiralled into a discussion on relative poverty and the place scientists have within it, has been using the rather surreal subtitle above for some time, and every time I see if anything interesting is going on, its more of the same silly argument. I'm not singling it out though, there are a few others that are suffering. *ducks out of the way of the rotten tomatoes, before deftly falling off the soapbox*
