Hi Phat,
Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to have to decline. One of the decisions I made back in January was to work with a much reduced moderator staff whose tasks were limited to keeping discussion focused and constructive. Specifically excluded from moderator responsibility was any need to explain or justify moderator actions. I decided that a four man team was all we needed, and we have four right now.
My old management style was to give everyone what they wanted as much as was practical. Blame Nosy, but after I made the initial abrupt change I was persuaded that the forum needed someone to make decisions and set policy, even if it made some people unhappy.
I have mixed feelings about the changes. EvC Forum now has much less a sense of community, something Jar was great at building, but it is no longer spending large proportions of time rehashing and agonizing over moderator decisions. Unfortunately, the quality of the scientific discussions has not improved, but that's controlled by how much scientific knowledge the participants possess and is not something EvC Forum can control. We seem to be attracting just as many creationists as ever, which is still not very many, and the ones that are here do not appear to have strong or even average scientific backgrounds.
But I would ask, if you're willing, if you would wait in the wings, ready to take the stage should the need arise. Oh, and Happy Birthday!
PS - The chat room is almost never used these days, and it will be disappearing at the next renewal. Our chat facility is an add-on that I pay for annually. But I still want a chat feature, and I will eventually implement one from scratch, but it will be a while until I get to it (could be years if work keeps up like it has). So if there's anyone out there interested in a fascinating design and implementation challenge let me know. Familiarity with some or all of HTML, CSS, Javascript, Perl and Ajax very helpful. You can send email to Admin.
