Exactly, Company Money. Those samples are from South Carolina Mills.
When you got paid you were paid in Company Money. That money could only be spent within the Company. The company owned the house you lived in and anything you owned was purchased through the company.
You could pack up and leave, but you could not put together any money to tide you over for the move or getting another job. The coins were not exchangeable into currency. Fall down on performance or get sick, you could be turned out of the house.
Now the next question.
When do you think the practice died out in the US?

The W.H. Smiths chain in the UK recently got taken to court (and condemned in the commons) for paying a Mentally disabled man in WH Smiths Vouchers.

I suspect that you are going to say "It hasn't". My memory can be a little hazy, but I think there are migrant worker camps that still use this type of pay system. It definitely still happens in third world nations. I remember watching a doc on sugar cane farms in South America where this type of pay system was still used.
