I've noticed an influx of rather young YECs here on the board. Is that typical? I have to wonder, where are the other kids who don't believe in anything yet, or in evolution?
What is it about young earth creationism that makes people lack humility when it comes to their own lack of knowledge? And why do they come on here sounding as if they have some scientific knowledge (e.g., asking for technical replies), then getting pissy when they can't answer any of the questions because they are 14 and don't know squat?
We should take it easy with them because they're kids and they are asking questions, but heck, it's kind of hard when they have absolutely no interest is hearing any other perspectives on the issues, nor in questioning their own beliefs.
I don't remember ever being that way...
... well, except for the time when my family was calling me "the Corrector" because I was constantly correcting their little mistakes...
Oh, that's right, they still call me that! lol

Hi Rox!
Glad you opened this topic, I was thinking about doing this myself.
Though I've been doing this a while, I haven't paid too much attention to kids joining, how many and when. Even so, I have a vague recollection that this happens every year around this time, that toward the end of every summer kids get bored and start casting about for new things to do. This is especially true of high school seniors, as the approaching college term draws more and more friends away to summer orientation programs.
That being said, the current crop seems awfully uniform in their degree of familiarity with science *and* religion, and in their stridency.

That makes sense. In the case of the 14 year olds, maybe it's the fact that they are entering high school. :confused
The reason I posted this topic was because of the similarities you noted: same age, same knowledge base, same religious leanings, and identical attitudes.
Besides, I was irked at PE for stating that it was okay for us to get technical, then come to find out he/she barely knows the basics of science...

Re: i know stuff
Hey TC, welcome back. It's been awhile.
I seem to remember you started out here in a somewhat similar if less strident vein, but got way better over time. It might be worthwhile for you to clue in some of the new folks (like prophecyexclaimed, etc) on the best way to interact on these fora. Especially coming from a young YEC like themselves, with god-like Moderator powers no less, you might be a good role model for them to emulate.
Of course, I'd prefer it if they weren't quite so stubborn as you are...

Being arrogant and pissy is normal for fourteen year olds, isn't it? I don't think it's just Creationist. I thought I knew everything when I was fourteen too.
Have to say though, I thought ProphecyExclaimed was treated rather roughly over on those other threads.

No, I don't think it's only 14 year old Creationists that are pissy, they just happen to be the only ones on this messageboard at the moment.
PE did have it pretty rough, but in my opinion, that's not necesarily a bad thing. PE was forced to realize he/she doesn't know as much as he/she thought. (Sorry, don't know what gender PE is. :\)
I do have to say, however, that PE has really made some giant leaps forward recently and it was rather inspirational. I am hopeful that PE will actually try to learn a thing or two about how science really works.

The other problem is how can you tell the age of a poster ? Supposedly adult creationists are just as bad.

Excuse me for not hunting down a Spanish-English dictionary, but "En la tierra del ciegos, el tuerto es el Rey."
My Spanish is weak, but I only don't know ciegos and tuerto, so I'm curious. I'm also curious why it's not de los ciegos. I'm tired of wondering and not asking, so now I'm asking.

I don't think it's just Creationist. I thought I knew everything when I was fourteen too.
I have some thoughts. I don't think it's just creationists that are like that at fourteen, but I do think young creationists show up flaunting their ignorance for a reason.
Regular science is overwhelming and rarely the main interest of a 14-year-old. A normal fourteen year old is unlikely to boldly walk into a medical lab and start an argument about pathology.
Creation science is not overwhelming and is occasionally the main interest of a 14-year-old, as it is a religious/philisophical issue. Since a fundamentalist 14-year-old is likely to be told that he can confound scientists with a few simple facts, it's not surprising that he suddenly sees himself as David, his simple facts as the stones, and the scientists as the Philistine giants about to be slain for the glory of God.
On the flip side, I mourn the loss of respect for age, creationist or otherwise. I even wish that the evolutionists spoke more respectfully even to someone like Buzsaw just because of his age. That's one of those "moral decline" things I wish wasn't declining.

Young idealistic Christian folks are likely to look at themselves as evangelists in the Paul mode, and so inherit the anti-intellectual tradition in which Paul preached. Recall that Paul (in Titus) quoted Epimenides's paradox and missed the irony. He told Titus that a Cretan philosopher had said that "All Cretans are liars," so therefore it must be true.
Beset by learned folks all over the place asking probing theological questions as well as pointing out errors in his logic, Paul defended himself by posing his famous question, "Hath not the Lord made folly of the wisdom of this world?"
The problem is that the answer to the question is no, He hath not. Plenty of people place their faith in the wisdom of this world every day by, for example, flying in a plane. The wisdom of this world has been quite demonstrably adequate in mankind's investigations of nature, where it has helped us find mechanisms for weather, embryology and heredity, the origin of diseases, the motion of celestial objects and many other things previously attributed to the activity of supernatural beings. Are we materialists mere cynics busy unweaving the rainbow? Or are we paying nature the respect it deserves by taking it on its own terms?
Of course the prospect of utter certainty promised by fundamentalism is more attractive to a teenager, already fed up with the learning grind and its demands. Science won't give him that certainty because our knowledge is constantly in process, and the more we know the more we find that remains to be known.
(P.S. to truthlover: There are a few different wordings of the saying here, it means 'in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.')

Maybe it's working in the tech field that did this to me, but honestly, I don't often find the old are that worthy of respect, in terms of just being old - I mean, if a person deserves respect, then they get it, from me. But I don't give respect just for age.
Seniors by and large that I run into are inflexible, set in their ways, unable to embrace change, can't absorb modern skills, and most dammingly - show a blatant lack of respect for anyone younger than themselves. Especially to anyone working a service job. (I work night desk at a hotel and the worst, rudest customers are always over 50.)
Basically I guess I'm saying that I'd have a lot more respect for the elderly if most of them weren't so arrogant.
Off topic, sorry. And no offense to the more seasoned members of this forum.
