"Making Gold from Muck"

Dr. John Smol of Queen's University was awarded the Herzberg Gold Medal, and the million-dollar prize that accompanies it, for his work as a paleolimnologist. Twenty years of studying the sediments and ooze at the bottom of lakebeds has enabled him to contribute to our understanding of pollution, climate change, and the history of Canada's fresh water ecosystems.
