A recent BBC News article points to the history of attempts to colonize the British Isles. It seems to indicate that on at least seven occasions the human populations of the British Isles dropped to zero or near zero, with a close correlation to temperature.

Love that Dunkirk spirit! But perhaps they should have gotten the message....
One interesting related point is the fact that North Sea trawlers often drag fossils up from the sea bed. These date from the time when there was a land bridge between the British Isles and Continental Europe.

Deeinitely off topic but I recall that there was a headline in an English newspaper in the 50's that read:
STORM IN CHANNEL - CONTINENT ISOLATED

I guess the arrogance was showing through
"oh no, we can't reach the brits! noooooooo!"
I wonder if they still think they're the center of europe?
Be a shame to show them a map--we'd have another revolution, copernican style

One thing that has always admired about the Brits is their penchant for self-deprecating humour. That headline is a great example of it.

Centre of Europe? Pah - who'd want to be!
Centre of the World more like - why do you think the Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich...
