Says he's in rehab now, so I guess that means he's contained. I don't know about you, but I think most 16 or 17 year old boys are quite capable of taking care of themselves, so while I understand the concerns involved in this scandal, the speed at which it's growing and the calls for resignations of congressional leaders (Hastert says he's not going anywhere, by the way) is quite a surprise. It's not like Foley raped a 12-year-old or anything.
I can understand the concerns of parents who send their kids to Washington to gain the valuable experience of being a page. They don't expect that they're providing fresh meat to Capitol Hill predators. But even so, if I didn't think my kid was capable of taking care of himself I wouldn't send him there. So while I understand the rage at someone like Foley who was obviously taking advantage of his position, I don't quite get it when it comes to Hastert, Reynolds, Boehner, et. al. As yet at least, this isn't a rape scandal. Does anyone else think the republicans are going overboard? So now I suppose I should pinch myself. These are republicans we're talking about, after all. The family values people. They seem to be feeding on one another now. It's fun to watch. W.W.E.D.?

These are "republicans" who have gone on a moral crusade. If they find themselves caught in their own trap, we should sit back and enjoy the debacle. Compassionate conservatism - bringing you a kinder, gentler torture chamber

Oh I promise you, I'm enjoying the hell out of it. I hope it keeps up 'til election day, as it looks like it almost certainly will. I just don't get it. The family values crowd seems to have the most complicated set of morals I've ever heard of.

I don't know who has this sig, but it goes like this:
the modern conservative is engaged in mankind's oldest desire--the search for the moral justification of selfishness. pretty much, if you're a social conservative, your screwed. (you know, maybe this is why they are so damn concerned over family values--their own families are falling apart, so naturally, it has to be from outside influences, such as society. Since they can't stand their own families crashing, they're trying to fix everybody, or something like that. so in a way, it shouldn't be surprising that those who eschew a focus on family values have crappy families) Want to help give back to the world community? the real trip is living here. it's too late for them to take his name off the ballot so whatever poor sap it is that they found to run on the republican ticket has to convince the voters to pull the lever for foley.
"a vote for foley is a vote for me!" brilliant shit.

can you say--the dems actually have a chance!
they already found a replacement for Foley. And he's doing just that--I'm not Foley, but my name isn't on the ballots. (of course, if people stick with the party, like those who would vote in mickey mouse before they would a clinton, it won't really matter who's name is on the ballot) Want to help give back to the world community? Some of us really do hope (fantasize?) that we are selecting from amongst our smartest, most sincere citizens those who we chose to run the country. For many, the heart of the scandal is the shear stupidity and brazen two-facedness of Folly and others who disregarded what was going on. It seems to be a cheap amusement to watch the Washington circus, but these buffoons will cost us all dearly in the long run.

The smartest, most sincere citizens are smart enough and sincere enough to stay out of politics. There won't be much improvement until we have campaign reform that ends the absurd level of spending on political advertising. Compassionate conservatism - bringing you a kinder, gentler torture chamber

Does anyone else think the republicans are going overboard? I certainly don't; the guy committed a federal felony by breaking a law he himself helped pass; Hastert and other key Republican leaders were fully notified of the issue but chose to bury it rather than investigate a federal crime. The guy's a criminal and a letch, and Boner, Reynolds, and Hastert gave their tacit approval to keep a Republican seat. And then they scrambled to lie about doing it, afterwards. I'd be just as pissed if these guys were all Democrats. I don't see anything hypocritical or homophobic about prosecuting a sexual predator for breaking the law. And a 40-year-old Congressman propositioning 16-year-old children is exactly that.

I agree with your assessment. This really isn't that huge a deal, and it seems to be growing way out of proportion (and I will add Dems to the list of blowers as well).
But I suppose this has its roots way back with Clinton, and maybe Gary Hart. For some reason age difference became an issue with people that were clearly adults. I don't remember how many reps called Lewinski a child. If that goes for Lewinski, what does that mean for 16-17 y.o.'s? And the kicker on this one being that it's homosexual. Anyone know what this guy's position was on gay issues? Of course I am torn on this. While I am amused, and would be glad to see this take out republican power in Congress (and believe it would be justice given the topic), I am worried this will only justify and so escalate such scandal building in the future. Hmmmm, justice v honesty. holmes {in temp decloak from lurker mode} "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." (D.Bros)

The Rethuglican leadership actually wanted Foley out of there anyway - whenever he went to the House library he'd never use a bookmark. He'd just bend over a page.

Can someone please explain to me why this is such a big issue?

I don't think that it should be any big deal except for the fact that Foley was the champion of legislation to forbid the sort of thing he was doing. That makes the schadenfreude component of the issue have that much more Freude for the rest of us...
