OK, I'm still in Chapter 1, but this book is asking "what is the biological nature of behavior, and especially what we call 'innate' behavior"
This question has been addressed on numerous threads here, but there are always gaps in the explanation. There is always a missing connection between genes and neural networks. How do genes operate in such a way that nesting behavior can be evoked, when such a behavior is distributed over a series of neural networks? It's not localized in any classical way whatsoever--so how does it happen?
This book is by cognitive scientists, ones who are especially adept at connectionist (neural network) modelling. They're asking all of the interesting questions... and I hope they provide answers. Not just talking, but also simulations exhibiting the computational behaviors and results that they talk about.
For those who have been asking these questions... stay tuned! The first author (Dr. Elman) does some of the best research in the field (IMHO). So I'm really excited to proceed.
Ben
