What's going on?
Why the sudden spate of spammers? I've seen more in the past couple days that I had in the approximately one year I've been lurking/posting here. Is this happening at other message boards all of the sudden?

I don't think anything particularly unusual is going on. It's probably just bad luck. If I consider what is different today from, say, a year ago, EvC Forum is approximately twice as active, and the rate at which new members join has also approximately doubled. The increased activity probably increases the likelihood that we'll come to the attention of trolls and spammers.
