Avatars around here seem to be slanted toward cats, the most famous of which are Percy's "Bill the Cat" and Admins "Catbert".
I've wondered if the evo side tends to be "cat people", and the creo side, "dog people".
Me - Evo side - 2 cats. An older Calico, named "Hiss" (but often known as "Fuzzbrain"), and a young gray Tabby, called "Keeper" at the animal shelter, but renamed "Stripe" by me.

Cat and Mouse / Wiener Dog
Not my cat, but one of several photos forwarded to me by a friend.
Added by edit: Another photo from same source as above.

ps: Below (and also avatar of the moment) is my cat "Hiss". As close as you can get to a stuffed animal, and still require feeding. Photo caught her in mid yawn.

Bad Moose has diverted another topic
Minnemooseus writes:
An older Calico, named "Hiss" (but often known as "Fuzzbrain"), and a young gray Tabby, called "Keeper" at the animal shelter, but renamed "Stripe" by me.
I originally posted 2 of the following 3 at the Your pictures/faces topic.
Moose and Hiss:
Moose and Stripe:
Stripe was a very ill kitty in this photo (peretonitis). He died +/- a week later.
New and younger cat Squeak:
Squeak (then called "Tawney Kitty") ended up at the vertranary clinic I work at as cleaning dude. She and another cat had been abandoned in a house when the renter moved out. It was a while before she was discovered. She came very close to starving to death - Had to be force fed at the clinic. A second cat did not survive.
I first had cats starting in Montana in about 1995, when I took over Hiss and Sly from friends. While there, a third little kitten showed up and moved in, who I called "Scruffy"
I moved back to Nevada with 3 cats in the pickup cab with me, they being more or less tranquilized for part of the trip. Sly, per his history, seemed immune to the tranquilizer pill. Initially after I got to Nevada, I had the cats staying with a friend while I found a place to stay (camper trailer in a mobile home park). There a coyote or owl apparently got Scruffy.
Moved back to Minnesota with Hiss and Sly (who, btw, grew up together). Sly became diabetic, and was too far gone to save with maintainance insulin treatment. Had to have euthanized.
So, had:
Sly and Hiss, then Sly and Hiss and Scruffy, then back to Sly and Hiss, then just Hiss, then Hiss and Stripe, then just Hiss, and now Hiss and Squeak. I have developed a tradition of naming cats to start with "S", although all had been named before I realized such. Maybe not a good idea, considering the history of Scruffy, Sly, and Stripe. They were all male. Hiss and Squeak are female.

Added by edit: I don't have much for photos of Sly and Scruffy, and none in digital form.

Charles Mingus Cat Toilet Training Program
Something I was previously aware of, but was pointed out to me again via
Charles Mingus' Guide to Cat Toilet Traning - WFMU's Beware of the Blog.
See http://www.mingusmingusmingus.com/Mingus/cat_training.html for full article.
See also Achewood § June 20, 2003, which is from a reply message at the WFMU blog.
By the way, now have a third cat, a black and white male named "Teddy" (no photo available). Adopted from the local animal shelter. As my charity, I am currently attempting to keep that shelter stocked with kitty litter.
Teddy joins Hiss and Squeak. My cat history story is here.

Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus)
quote:
A recent conversation brought up the subject of one of my favorite animals”and one of the more remarkable examples of evolution: the Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus). The Fishing Cat is just that”a cat that subsists on fish, and that swims naturally. In fact, the Fishing Cat actually has webbed paws.
They’re a little bigger than a bobcat, about three and a half feet long (including tail), and are native to southeast Asia, where they live beside rivers, hunting for fish. They don’t just scoop the fish out with their paws; they swim and dive under the water to catch fish. There are several zoos that have Fishing Cats, including the National Zoo in Washington; you can watch a video of Fishing Cats hunting at their website. Personally, I’m fond of the cats at the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound in Rosamond, California; they have some adorable pictures of Fishing Kittens on their website.

Current Moose cat score: 4
Still have the previously mentioned Hiss and Squeak.
Last March I adopted another shelter cat, Teddy. He is black and white, about 3 years old (same as Squeak) and likes to get into anything physically possible.
A couple of weeks ago I started "home sheltering" (aka "adopted") another shelter cat, Marvin. Marvin is about 8 years old, a generic looking tabby, and is blind or near blind in one eye. So now I have two "one eyed" cats.
Marvin had been at the shelter a long time, and they finally adopted him out as a barn cat last July. The story is, about a week later Marvin disappeared. It ended up that he made the +/- 5 mile hike back into town to his old hanging grounds. Eventually he ended up back at the shelter and was then brought into the veterinary clinic where I am the cleaning person. He had a couple of injured front toes which ended up being amputated. Anyhow, all this indicated to me that I should adopt Marvin.
I have discovered, via communication with the previous owners, that Hiss is at least a couple of years older that I previously thought. She is currently designated as being 15, but may be even older.
A few months back I brought Hiss into the clinic because I thought she had a growth on her belly. A litter closer examination revealed that it was just a clump of matted fur (D'oh). But they noticed that she has lost weight and did blood tests. Found out she has kidney failure.
So now Hiss is on a special kidney diet (with one variation having added canola and olive oil). She also continues to get her daily dausiquin supplement (good for joints and bladder) and now also gets a daily potassium supplement. She also gets a daily 1/4 pill for high blood pressure and a daily shot of Zantac for stomach discomfort/nausea so she will eat better (she is currently 6 pounds, down from an in her prime 10 pounds). She also gets 250 ml of Ringers Lactate (glorified water) subcutaneously every other day. This functions as kitty dialysis. I all, Hiss has become high maintenance - she does seem to be reasonably healthy and comfortable for the shape she's in.
One thing nice, I do have a good heath program at work - For the cats, not for me. I get services and supplies at the employee discount or less (I get the Ringers at cost). Still, I managed to run up a $700 cat bill this year. I suspect that without the special discounts it could easily be twice a much.
Summary - 4 cats, 6 good eyes. Two ~3 year olds, an ~8 year old, and an ~15 year old. Hiss and Squeak and Teddy and Marvin.
Moose
btw - Hiss is the "grinning" cat of avatars past, and also the current avatar cat.
Edited by Minnemooseus, : Change "matter" to "matted".

Moose back up to 5 cats (w/ Andy Singer cartoon)
After loosing Hiss last February, I was down to 3 cats - Squeak and Teddy and Marvin.
Recently two 6 month old female sisters came down from the veterinary clinic branch office up the shore. The owner couldn't keep them, supposedly because they were not using the litter box in a rental property, or something like that. The owner couldn't get them into a local shelter, so they got brought down to the main office to be euthanised. We kept them at the clinic for about a week and were confident that they were indeed using the litter box.
Well, the management offered me free spayings if I would adopt the two of them. I got them to also throw in the first years inoculations at cost, and I now have two more cats.
They are "orange" medium haired cats, and looked pretty much alike. Except one was a little larger, had more white on the face, and had longer hair tufts coming out of her ears. And, get this, a Mohawk haircut! They had been named Lucy and Zoey, but I renamed them Punky and Spunky.
There was considerable turmoil the first time I brought them home. A few days later they went back to the clinic for their spayings and the second return home resulted in a much less cranky situation. Things are working out fine.
Which brings us to a cartoon I posted on the clinic's "humor" message board. Doing a search, it turns out it is currently on Andy Singer's home page. The gif itself is found here.
Hope Andy doesn't mind too much - Here it is:
"Lucy catches Mike preparing for a difficult dental procedure"
At the clinic, I added the above caption.
Dr. Lucy and Dr. Mike are the wife/husband DVM's and owners of the clinic. Dr. Mike is also the areas dog and cat dentist. Other clinics send dental cases his way.
