For once I enjoyed what a bishop said

Je suis Charlie. Je suis Ahmed. Je suis Juif. Je suis Parisien. I am Mancunian. I am Brum. I am London. Olen Suomi Soy Barcelona. I am Ukraine.

"Science adjusts it's views based on what's observed.
Faith is the denial of observation so that Belief can be preserved."

Birthright Citizenship wins the first round
Trump’s executive order that attempted to revoke Birthright Citizenship was halted for now. A temporary injunction has stopped it from taking effect.
Still the racists can be glad that Trump rescinded a bunch of executive orders banning the Federal Government from dealing with businesses that discriminate on grounds of race or sexual orientation. Including one signed by Lyndon B Johnson in 1965.
Trump has also ended an investigation of a massive Chinese hack of US Telecoms companies in a blow against US Cybersecurity.

For me, quibbling about Musk's intent is secondary. What disturbs me the most is some people saw it as a pseudo-Nazi salute, and they applauded.
At the same time, I wouldn't be at all stunned to see a video of Musk goose-stepping around the West Wing shouting "Blood and Soil!".

Third Term Constitutional Amendment Introduced in Congress
I posted this over at the The Second Amendment, but it belongs in this thread too. Republican representative Andy Ogles of Tennessee has introduced a resolution to add an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would allow Trump to serve a third term:

Re: Third Term Constitutional Amendment Introduced in Congress
Looks like a lot of sucking up to Trump, and I doubt it’s intended to go anywhere. If it did somehow pass what do you think of a third term for Obama?

Re: Third Term Constitutional Amendment Introduced in Congress
They changed the language to exclude Obama.
It limits those who have previously served consecutive terms.
That blocks Obama v3, but allows Trump v3.
The amendment that has no chance of ratification:
″No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms,”

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers

“A world that can be explained even with bad reasons is a familiar world. But, on the other hand, in a universe suddenly divested of illusions and lights, man feels an alien, a stranger. His exile is without remedy since he is deprived of the memory of a lost home or the hope of a promised land. This divorce between man and his life, the actor and his setting, is properly the feeling of absurdity.” – Albert Camus

Trump's Second Failure to Respond to an Epidemic
Just barely settled in and Trump is again poised to get Americans killed by failing to respond to a disease: Bird Flu. Now he has blocked the CDC from telling hospitals how to deal with human cases of bird flu, or even that they need to test for it:
The Fundamental Universal Truth: Everything that Trump touches dies.
BTW, since bird flu has jumped to cows and through their raw milk to pet cats and to humans, note that RFK Jr, Trump's nominee to run Health and Human Services, is dead set on promoting raw milk (as well as eliminating vaccines) and is recruiting a producer of raw milk (who has been hit with many lawsuits for food poisoning caused by his product being infected with, among other pathogens, bird flu) to be an advisor.

Re: Trump's Second Failure to Respond to an Epidemic
A week ago I thought I had reached peak hatred of President Asshole, who had reached peak asshole.
I was wrong on both counts.
I wonder what his secret service detail/proctologists thinks of being called to protect him. I dream of seeing a mass resignation of all the White House support staff.

Somebody's Going to get Hurt or Killed
Trump has rescinded the security details for Anthony Fauci (former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectrious Diseases), Mike Pompeo (former Secretary of State), Brian Hook (his aide) and John Bolton (former National Security Adviser). The only thing they have in common is that Trump resents their lack of fealty.
Fauci has hired his own security detail at his own expense, and I expect others will do the same. In answer to a reporter's question concerning Fauci and Bolton, Trump stated that he felt no responsibility should any harm come to them.
Threats to Fauci are based on accusations that he conspired with the Chinese to produce the covid virus, and that actions he supported to fight the disease unnecessarily hurt the country. Trump has encouraged such beliefs.
Threats to Pompeo, Bolton and others come from Iran for positions and actions they took while working in the first Trump administration. A man was arrested in 2022 in an alleged murder plot against Bolton.
The Biden administration advised the incoming Trump administration of continuing threats to these men. In describing his rationale, Trump said that no one should expect government protection in perpetuity. Past practice has been that protection is a function of threat assessments made by the intelligence community. Trump appears to be ignoring these assessments.
Trump has pulled security details for Fauci, Pompeo, Bolton and others

Do we have a lapdog Congress?
In a move reminiscent of Nixon's Saturday Night Massacre, last night Trump fired at least a dozen inspectors general. The news comes from people granted anonymity to share unauthorized information, not from the Trump White House, which some here have asserted would be the most transparent administration in our history.
Inspectors general are responsible for detecting and ridding the government of waste, fraud and abuse. No list of affected inspectors general has been released, but it is thought to include those from:
  • State Department
  • Agriculture Department
  • Department of the Interior
  • Transportation Department
  • Housing and Urban Development
  • Department of Education
  • Department of Labor
  • Defense Department
Those thought unaffected are from:
  • Department of Justice
  • Office of Personnel Management
  • FCC
  • Export-Import Bank
  • Department of Homeland Security
A 2022 law requires 30-day notification of Congress before removals of inspectors general. We're about to find out if we have a lapdog Congress.

Re: Do we have a lapdog Congress?
although Mitch McConnell's vote "No" against Hegseth, making it 3 Repubs who voted "No" with Murkowski and Collins was enough for Vance to have to make a tie-breaking vote to confirm him 51-50.

Trump tests limits of presidential powers with contentious first week

Moderator David Greene opening statement includes:

You can't judge a presidency based on the first few days...
The hell you can't. President ***** has already done 4 or more years of bad in "the first few days."
Although massively unconstitutional, the one thing I can philosophically get behind the elimination of birthright citizenship. While it may have made sense at the time it was constructed, it now seems silly to me to have citizenship based on which side of a line you were born on (What if the mother was lying on the border line at the birth time?)
