Phat writes: Sometimes it takes a guy who has experienced bankruptcy to realize that there is a limit to borrowing and printing, no matter how many hungry people are in your country. Trump increased our national debt by $8.8 trillion dollars during his 4 years in office.
Not that I think Trump is in any way a genius, but he understands money better than Kamala. If Trump understood money he wouldn't claim that China pays US tariffs.

Percy writes: And I acknowledged that in Message 1298. Thank you for correcting me multiple times. But me being wrong about Khelif doesn't make wrong my characterization of transgenderism/transexualism/hyperandrogenism in women's sport as a complex problem. Intersex and hyperandrogenism are very complex issues in women's sports. For example, the South African runner Caster Semenya has has the intersex condition 5α-Reductase 2 deficiency which gives her male levels of testosterone. In 2019 the IAAF put in a new rule for maximum testosterone levels in women's sports which required Semenya to take testosterone reducing medication which caused serious health issues. Women with male levels of testosterone obviously have an advantage over women with normal levels with all other things being equal. So how do we approach this issue? It's a tough one.

Percy writes: My Message 1301 and Message 1302 both received jeers, but the people who jeered did not reply, so I can only guess what they were objecting to. Possibly they objected to my argument that the most elite female athletes have the most male-like qualities, and one example I provided was of the hips of elite female runners. In my view, hormones are a different thing. No one is banning athletes for being too tall or having a specific hip shape. I think everyone accepts that some people will have advantages based on how their body is shaped. However, athletes are banned for having steroids (i.e. hormones) in their system. Various rules have been enacted in many sports that focus on testosterone levels for transgender athletes, and there is still debate as to the long lasting effects of testosterone on athletic performance. Is 3 years of testosterone blockers sufficient, or 5 years, or is there a permanent advantage once through puberty? If you think it is unfair for athletes to use steroids, you also have to ask if it is fair for women with male levels of naturally produced testosterone to compete against other women.

Percy writes: My guess is that the objection was to characterizing it in terms of having more male-like qualities, but that's just the reality. I think we also need to be careful of stigmatizing people. We shouldn't single someone out just because of their appearances. Good regulations would take care of this, testing everyone and holding them to the same standards. Those regulations should also be focused on creating fair competition. I'm of the opinion that the IOC and others really let these two boxers down by not having good regulations. Edited by Taq, .

K.Rose writes: If you are president, do you:A. Send an unknown, unvetted, young male illegal immigrant back to his home country, with the risk that he may have turned out to be a positive contributor to society? - or - B. Allow that same unknown, unvetted young male illegal immigrant to stay, the risk being that he might commit violent crime/harm (robbery, rape, murder....) against innocent US citizens? You follow the law. Specifically, you follow the law outlining the rules for people requesting asylum. We can certainly discuss what changes can be made to these laws. If they aren't requesting asylum, then you deport them. What you don't do is separate children from their parents at the border as a form of punishment and/or deterrence, which is what the Trump administration did. We also have to ask the question of what would happen to our economy if every illegal immigrant was magically transported back to their country of origin in an instance. From what I understand, it would collapse the construction and agriculture sectors of our economy, and possibly others like hospitality services. The impact would be felt the most in rural America due to loss of workers. The dirty little secret is that we need illegal immigrants in our economy. They are taking jobs most Americans don't want and are paid less than Americans would demand.

Phat writes: Essentially it boils down to this. He has certain big-name clients who would drop him on a dime if they ever found out he voted for Trump. The basic difference between progressives and populists is that if a populist doesn't like you they may block you yet not bother to report you, while a progressive would not only block you but insist on reporting you. This is a perfect example of MAGA fake persecution. They make up stories of how they may be persecuted, and act as if that is the same as actually being persecuted.
This country is so divided politically and it is as much your side's fault as it is my side. False. There is only one side that spread lies about an election, led an insurrection against our democracy, and attempted and is still attempting to take peoples' votes away.
This country is so divided politically and it is as much your side's fault as it is my side. I suppose you can call me Deplorable Phat. YOU are the ones who are authoritarian and insist on defining morality and ethics for EVERYONE. We can add "authoritarianism" to the list of words you don't understand. An example of authoritarianism is not letting woman control their own health care through the power of law. People saying you are immoral or unethical is not authoritarianism. It's just people voicing their opinion, otherwise known as free speech.

Percy writes: What? Can't use Google? This is the first link returned on a search for "democratic platform": Party Platform - Democrats As of 8/23/2024, that links to the 2020 platform. You will want the second link. DNC Releases 2024 Party Platform to be Voted on at Convention - Democrats

Phat writes: If you think its going to make me hate him, rest assured it won't happen. We would settle for "unfit for office". Do we really want someone affecting our economy when they don't even understand the basics of how tariffs work?

Phat writes: Sooner or later, this country will have to deal with its own potential bankruptcy. Since when? What are you basing this on? In 2022, about 15% of government revenue was spent on interest payments for the national debt. How is that going to bankrupt us? Would it be nice to have that 15% back to put into other programs? Absolutely, there is a opportunity cost that comes with paying off a national debt, but it isn't anywhere close to bankrupting us. As a comparison, I wonder what the average person pays in mortgage interest compared to their annual salary. The numbers I am seeing are about 30% of income is spent on mortgage interest.

NosyNed writes: All of what you say maybe true. But competent economists do worry about the state of the US economy (and other nations). The deficit is large and producing growing debt. There seems to be no political will on either side to stem the tide so there is a large future risk. If the debt continues to grow then there is a risk in the future, but there is no imminent bankruptcy in our near future, the kind that Phat thinks is about to happen.

Phat writes: The problem is that you think that only your side possesses facts and evidence, little realizing that you have taken it upon yourselves to define truth and rationality to the exclusion of many people. If people believe in made up nonsense it is they who are removing themselves from reality. No one is forcing you to believe nonsense. As the old saw goes, you are entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts.

Phat writes: What? Elon Musk defected to the "dark side"?! It used to be that Americans could disagree and still be thought of as sane. You have fallen for the lie that only one side represents truth and the other side is a cult. And you see no problem with this? How is it a lie? Trump paid off a porn star to cover up an affair, and yet he will still get around 85% of the evangelical vote. Explain that. He has convinced about 80% of Republicans that he was cheated out of winning the 2020 election, despite not a shred of evidence demonstrating widespread fraud. They even made a golden idol of the man.
I'll tell you a bit about my side. We believe that the world is embroiled in a spiritual war for the very soul of humanity. And you rally behind one of the least Christ-like people imaginable. Go figure.
You believe that Trump is a threat to Democracy, while I believe that Democracy (or the American way of life) was in trouble before Trump, during Trump, and after Trump. How was democracy in trouble before Trump? Trump actually tried to keep himself in power with a coup. When has any other president done that?
All that I see is that both MAGA and the Kremlin are conservative. Invading Ukraine is conservatism?
Why do you think we warn people about the authoritarianism of the Left? Psychological projection.

Phat writes: I dont see the system collapsing just yet, but I do see a definite Recession bordering on being a Depression starting late this year into next year. Recessions are normal, and a healthy part of any economy because they trim out the economic fat (i.e. companies that are too bloated). If you claim there will be a recession next year enough times you will be right at some point. No matter what the national debt is we will have recessions from time to time. Again, that's a normal outcome of market capitalism.
