What alternatives are there to censorship?
Censorship is not a good path to follow.
WaPo writes:
Most of the laws do not spell out precisely who will decide what counts as obscene but suggest the judgment should come from the courts.
How would parents feel if the Bible itself were banned due to the very censorship laws they are advocating?
WaPo writes:
Those on the political right, however, contend that the legislation is necessary to prevent children from exposure to pornographic and sexual content that will harm their mental health and warp their development.
I would argue that by limiting what can be read, that itself might end up warping the child's development.
The whole controversy over what is and is not harmful to minors is valid to a degree, but censorship is not the answer. What other possible measures could we as a society consider?

This has happened, much to the chagrin of the conservatives in a Utah school district who passed such a silly law and got bit by it's unintended consequences. Type "Where did they ban the Bible?" on your google window and you get
A Utah school district has removed the Bible from some schools' shelves.
Also, it is of note that one book has never been close to being banned (not that any book should be) is Mein Kampf.
Phat asks:

Education, education, education. Increased classes in libraries and their function.
This is directed mostly to the parents of children.

Re: What alternatives are there to censorship?

Already done:
  • Utah district bans Bible in elementary and middle schools after complaint calls it "sex-ridden", CBS News, 05 June 2023:
    quote:
A suburban school district in Utah has banned the Bible in elementary and middle schools after a parent frustrated by efforts to ban materials from schools argued that some Bible verses were too vulgar or violent for younger children. And the Book of Mormon could be next.
The 72,000-student Davis School District north of Salt Lake City removed the Bible from its elementary and middle schools while keeping it in high schools after a committee reviewed the Scriptures in response to a parental complaint. The district has removed other titles, including Sherman Alexie's "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" and John Green's "Looking for Alaska," following a 2022 state law requiring districts to include parents in decisions over what constitutes "sensitive material."
You know, lusting after donkey dicks, Lot's daughters incestuously raping their own father, etc.
And articles on this include fears that the Book of Mormon would be next to be banned.
  • The Bible is among dozens of books removed from this Texas school district, NPR, 18 August 2022:
    quote:
Students at the Keller Independent School District outside Fort Worth, Texas, went back to school Wednesday. But instead of the focus being on their return, much of the attention has been heaped on an email that was sent out the day before, instructing school staff to pull all copies of a list of more than 40 books from classrooms and school libraries.
The books that were pulled include the graphic novel adaptation of Anne Frank's diary, all versions of the Bible and numerous books with LGBTQ+ themes or characters. The School Board did not say why the Bible and the Anne Frank book were removed, but parents had objected to them, according to the list.
  • Numerous articles of attempts to ban the Bible in Florida in response to which politicians hypocritically rationalized blocking it.
Actual banning has resulted in public outrage (including from the politician who wrote and pushed through that Utah law), but what else should they expect? When you give every single "parent" veto power, they're going to use it -- I used scare quotes because of the many instances of "outraged parents" at school board meetings have been outside MAGAt agitators.
The irony is that all the MAGAt rhetoric about "parents' rights" are actually designed to deprive parents of any rights regarding their children's education.
I see a parallel to a novel in which everybody went to Hell because the criteria for Damnation included the existence of any religious group who believed that your group was damned; since virtually every religion believes that of all other religions, everybody went to Hell.
With these book banning laws, if even one parent objects to a book, then it gets banned. The logical consequence would be empty libraries, since every book could have at least one parent objecting to it: no science books, no history books, no creationist books, no medical books (too many explicit graphics), no dictionaries (the words!), etc.

Hey!!
Hello. Wow! Good for you.
Just chanced upon this after a looong time since checking in here and felt I had to say hi.
You are the only EvC-er I ever actually met in person (Trafalgar Sq, 4th plinth folk music bonanza). Dunno what year that was. Things have clearly progressed since. Hope you are doing great. It seems you are.
Stay happy.

Re: Hey!!
Hello Straggler! Sorry it's taken me a couple of months to get back to you. I think I have a reasonable excuse, as I was recovering from a fairly radical and topic related surgery.
Thanks for the happy memory - that was quite the fond evening at Trafalgar Square. Can't wait to get back to some dancing and communal merriment. I hope the last few years have been kind to you, I've mostly moved from debating to streaming; its a much more relaxing endeavour <3

You didn't change your mind and have everything cut off again, did you? Or, in this case, glued back on?
Since you never comin' 'round I gotta hit you while you're here. Hope it all works out for you, Mod.
OK, I'll go crawl back into my hole, now.

Re: Hey!!
I have a very close friend that transitioned a couple years back. I have used the glue back on comment a few times with her. She laughs so I guess it is not over the line. She also lets me fish with her still. I will never forget the surreal moment when she started whining about her nails when she was taking a 25"(that is big) walleye of the hook.

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence. -Christopher Hitchens

Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts

"God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.

If your viewpoint has merits and facts to back it up, why would you have to lie?

You are one brave lady. If you don't already do outreach I suggest you consider it. If you can impart that strength of character to others then this world will be a much better place.

Aww that's sweet. I do, as it transpires, do a thing or two in that area, although mostly in a quiet background kind of way. That said I am planning on doing a charity stream on 31st March (TdoV), and use my rather limited follower base to drum up some funds for the National Center for Transgender Equality. In order to do that though I do need to get me some engineering done.
The last two years particularly have involved me learning that I am indeed, living the dream. It can be quite difficult to accept strangely enough, but long may it continue!
