Feb 12: Celebrate The Day
To all our extreme religious fundamentalist evolution-denying members … Happy Darwin’s Day.
To the rest of you … Happy Darwin’s Day.
And if there is anyone I missed … Happy Darwin’s Day.

Maybe we should have an Edisons Day, a Michaelangelo Day, and a George Washington Carver Day! Heck, Elon Musk could even sponsor a Tesla Day!
Seriously...I looked it up.
quote:
nternational Darwin Day on February 12th will inspire people throughout the globe to reflect and act on the principles of intellectual bravery, perpetual curiosity, scientific thinking, and hunger for truth as embodied in Charles Darwin. It will be a day of celebration, activism, and international cooperation for the advancement of science, education, and human well-being.
Local and state governments will close in commemoration of the Day, and organizations and businesses will celebrate by engaging in community outreach centered around science as a tool for the betterment of humanity.
Darwin Day will be observed by the United Nations and its members as an opportunity for international partnerships through the common language of science for the common good of all.
The mission of International Darwin Day is to inspire people throughout the globe to reflect and act on the principles of intellectual bravery, perpetual curiosity, scientific thinking, and hunger for truth as embodied in Charles Darwin.
The UN is observing it? Sounds like you secular humanist Globalists have found a hero! The cause does sound noble, though. Happy Darwin Day!

Have I ever mentioned that my religious beliefs are irrational, illogical and not supported by any evidence?
Have I ever mentioned that all religious beliefs are irrational, illogical and not supported by any evidence?
Have I ever mentioned that EVERY God or god that humans can describe and discuss and worship is but a human creation and exists only so long as there are believers?
Phat, it is simply impossible to logically and rationally defend something that is irrational, illogical and not supported by any evidence.
BUT there are lessons and models and methods and processes and procedures found in most religions that do work to improve this life if followed.
If Christians actually did what Jesus or the Buddha or what is included as the basis in the teachings of Loa Tzu or Confucius or the Dali Llama it might be possible to claim religions had so social value.
Unfortunately that seems extremely rare.

Somewhere there must be a list of commemorative days. At times, it seemed that the only thing Congress could do was to declare new commemorative days like National Doughnut Day (first Friday of June).
Don't forget Towel Day, 25 May:
quote:
The importance of the towel was introduced in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy original radio series in 1978. The follow-up book explained the importance of towels in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy universe in Chapter 3, using much of the same wording as the original radio series:
A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you — daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.
More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost." What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.
Hence a phrase that has passed into hitchhiking slang, as in "Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is." (Sass: know, be aware of, meet, have sex with; hoopy: really together guy; frood: really amazingly together guy.)
— Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Towel Day website is at Towel Day - Celebrating the life and work of Douglas Adams
I just learned that 25 May is also an international Geek Pride Day which originated in Spain as Día del Orgullo Friki ("Pride Friki", "friki"/"friqui" from English "freak" is a geek (modern usage, not as per Nightmare Alley)):
quote:
That linked me to Frikipedia (English page at La Frikipedia - Wikipedia ):
quote:
La Frikipedia was a Spanish-language parody of Wikipedia. Frikipedia can be translated into English as The Geekpedia or The Freakypedia, since the title comes from the anglicism freak. It is also called "the extremely serious encyclopedia" or the "useless encyclopedia". It currently has more than 8,000 articles. The Frikipedia is under the GNU Free Documentation License. In early 2006, the head of the Frikipedia decided to close the site after a complaint by the SGAE. It reopened on October 20, 2007.
25 May is also the day commemorating the works of Sir Terry Pratchett. I wonder why so many choose 25 May.

Not much time. Need to get ready for my monthly Atheists United breakfast meeting -- last week was Backyard Skeptics.
Wikipedia has a list of holidays. Most of the lists are religious holidays for various religions, but at the bottom we get lists of secular holidays:
International
  • All Hallows' Day – (1 November in the United States, Canada, Mexico (where it is known as the Day of the Dead), and other countries). A day of remembrance and honour of all the Faithful Believers who have passed, been canonized, and gone to Heaven.
  • Asteroid Day – (30 June, global). Founded in 2014 (initiated after the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor air burst) and recognized in 2016 by the United Nations to mark the June 30, 1908 Tunguska event and raise awareness about the hazards of asteroid impacts.
  • Halloween – (31 October, especially in the UK and former British colonies, including the United States, Canada, and Australia). Also called All Hallows' Eve, it is a highly secularized outgrowth of Christian All Hallows' Day on 1 November, and pagan Celtic Samhain (halfway point between autumn equinox and winter solstice).
  • International Men's Day – (19 November in Canada, Australia, India, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, Singapore, South Africa, and Malta)
  • International Women's Day – (8 March, particularly in Australia, former Soviet bloc countries and mainland China)
  • May Day, Labor/Labour Day, or International Workers' Day – (1 May in many European and South American countries. The United States and Canada both celebrate on the first Monday in September)
  • Saint Nicholas Day – (5 or 6 December in the Netherlands, Belgium, Lebanon, and other countries)
  • Saint Patrick's Day – (17 March in Ireland, the United States, Canada, and other countries by people of Irish descent or heritage)
  • Saint Valentine's Day – (14 February in the United States, Canada, and many other countries as a day to celebrate love and affection)
  • Thanksgiving Day – (4th Thursday in November in the United States, 2nd Monday in October in Canada). Generally observed as an expression of gratitude, traditionally to God, for the autumn harvest. It is traditionally celebrated with a meal shared among friends and family in which turkey is eaten. In Canada, since the climate is colder than in the US, the harvest season begins and ends earlier.
Regional {DWise1: not enough time this morning so you'll need to look it up yourself; sorry}
Unofficial holidays, awareness days, and other observances
  • 420 (20 April) (Day celebrating cannabis culture)
  • April Fools' Day (1 April)
  • Bicycle Day (19 April)[1]
  • Black Friday or Buy Nothing Day (Day after Thanksgiving Day in the United States)
  • Bloomsday (16 June based on James Joyce's 1922 novel Ulysses)
  • Festivus (23 December)
  • Friendship Day (First Sunday in August)
  • Galactic Tick Day (Occurs every 633.7 days, starting 2 October 1608)
  • Giving Tuesday[2] (Tuesday following Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the United States)
  • International Talk Like a Pirate Day (19 September)
  • Marathon Monday (Local name in Boston for Patriot's Day)
  • Mischief Night (30 October)
  • Mole Day (23 October)
  • Monkey Day (14 December)
  • National Cancer Survivors Day (First Sunday in June)
  • National Gorilla Suit Day (31 January)
  • National Hugging Day (21 January)
  • No Pants Day (First Friday of May)
  • Opposite Day (25 January) (Day where you do everything opposite)
  • Pi Day (14 March)
  • Record Store Day (Third Saturday of April)
  • Singles Awareness Day (15 February)
  • Star Wars Day (4 May) "May the Fourth be with you"
  • Super Bowl Sunday (Day of the National Football League championship)
  • Sweetest Day (Third Saturday in October)
  • Tax Freedom Day
  • Towel Day (25 May) (Tribute to the author Douglas Adams)
    World Backup Day (31 March)
    World Peace Day (21 September)
"National Gorilla Suit Day"? And don't ask about "No Pants Day".
Also, "Pi Day" is based on the date, 14 March, which only works in the US because of our backwards way of writing dates (month-day instead of the normal day-month), so 3-14 only works in the US, but nowhere else.
Gotta run!

Re: Feb 12: Celebrate The Day
Ah, yes. Super Bowl Sunday. I am ready for the game. I even made ChiliMac and have the chips 'n dips.
This one is too close to call. Jalen Hurts will have Chris Jones to deal with while Mahomes is staring down the Eagles front 4. All of them.
Technically, the analytics say the Eagles have a slight favor, real thin, in both pass defense and run offense but the intangibles, Andy Reid and staff v Nick Sirianni and staff (both acknowledged as excellent) gives a slight edge to the Chiefs.
This is going to be a back and forth shootout. I hope. A blowout would be tragic.
And skip the halftime show. It's gonna suck.
BTW, Happy Darwin's Day.

Most super bowls are shootouts. Why would a blowout be tragic? Apart from dampening the ad revenue in the latter half of the broadcast!

The Great Commission
The Great Commission requires that I proselytize reality to the unwashed masses here at the EvC platform. It is the will of Gaia and I cannot resist her call.
MrDeity is a delightful personality in our priesthood with a sharp wit and some philosophically sharpened serrated slashing teeth ... eh ... reasoning.
Through the joyful banter of his experience and rescue from the clutches of the church he is building to more than a personal gripe. I especially like from 3:45-5:30.
A MrDeity video below the fold so to not offend the sensitive religious constitutions.

You saw no mouse of any shape, belief, or kind
Don't tease me with Gaia. The entire Multiverse known and unknown was created by a Being far superior to her lame New Age Spector. But convincing you is impossible since you hate Theism so much. Ive got one word for you, Pagan: Jesus. (Yeshua) No high stepping Catholic statue can compete. No New Age Pagan concept from anywhere on Planet Earth can come close. No Religion can hold up unless it acknowledges Jesus.
Through Him all things were created. All seen and unseen. And the fact that you secular weirdos get so angry shows me that the spirits (which plague you) are angry. Tough.
Go jump on a starship and get the hell out of here.
Deut 4:15-20:

5 You saw no form of any kind the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, 16 so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. 19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars--all the heavenly array--do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. 20 But as for you, the LORD took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of his inheritance, as you now are.

And now a word from our sponsor. (Mr.Deity is selling mouse traps)

Mighty Mouse
Mr.Deity actually makes sense. I must admit.
And the fact that Dennis Prager even lets him speak shows me that Mr.Deity is the mouse who pulled the thorn out of the lions paw and scared the elephant. I examined the man Dalton and was impressed with is social media presence and honesty.
You guys (Peanut Gallery) will probably accuse him of being a Conservative but last time I checked it was no crime.
