Well, this sucks!
All I really need is a new motherboard and processor and RAM. The case and power supply and hard drives are fine, so I will not lose any data and the replacement cost will only be about $1800, but I hate losing the time it's going to take to get the parts and put it back together and install all the software. I have had a series of issues ever since I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10...FUCK Windows 10. I sure hope Windows 11 will be better!!Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! I just discovered a fix for the major problems I had with Win 10, so I will be able to avoid it on the new Win 11 machine.
I had 5 hard drives installed in the computer and with a power switch panel on the front so I could power up or down the hard drives I wanted to use. This was so drives I was not using didn't need to have wear when I I did not need them. I always cold swapped them, turning them off before booting up, but in Win 10 there is a feature called fast boot that creates a hibernation file that makes the computer crash if a drive that was powered up when you shut down is not still powered up when you boot back up. Windows 7 didn't have this feature. I now know how to turn fast boot off. Yay! My new parts should be here Wednesday.Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! I'm already using SSDs for the system drive and a scratch drive and that did speed up a lot of things. The new motherboard, processor and RAM are going to be a lot higher speed too and are all built for over-clocking.

I can't deny I'm looking forward to seeing how much faster this will be than the old version. I have bench marks for how long it takes to convert 100 images from raw to tif and how long it takes to run those images through my stacking program and several other operation. I usually leave the system cranking through those operations overnight because they suck up all the resources so I can't do anything else while they are running.
I've built a lot of systems for friends and relatives and for imaging systems at work. I showed my son-in-law how to build his 1st PC and he and I helped my grandson build his 1st high-end gaming system when he was about 10.Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! The parts for my computer rebuild came today.
Intel doesn't include a cooler or thermal paste with their processors anymore, who knew? I have a custom cooler that I will reuse, but I will have to drive to Salem tomorrow to get the thermal tape from BestBuy.Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! Well, it turned out that I didn't quite get the RAM seated all the way into the slots/sockets. This is my 1st ASUS motherboard and I am not impressed with the RAM or expansion slots as they are a a lot more difficult to insert the component than my old Gigabyte motherboards.. My air CPU cooler would not fit so I installed my first fluid cooling system. Got it running and setting up the BIOS, and drivers, etc. and I should be off and running, but when I try and install the operating system I get a message that the system is incompatible. I was hoping to use my old graphics/video card because the prices are so high on them right now, but a new $500 dollar superduper graphics card should be here tomorrow and then if everything goes ok, a day of installing software and I should be back in business.
ABE: Meanwhile I'm missing out on getting images of several developmental stages of my dragonfly nymphs that I'd hoped to capture. They are thriving on microorganisms I rear in rainwater and pond mud buckets on my patio. Life is good when your nymphs are thriving!Edited by Tanypteryx, . Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! Yeah that image has been making the rounds on facebook the last couple weeks. And those are damselflies.
I'm finally getting some summer weather and the flight season is in full swing here. I have spent several hours the last 3 days knee deep i a stream with my camera. That particular photo looks staged to me. Over the last few years there have been a large series of popular images of charismatic small animals in "cute" poses. The first ones I remember were tropical frogs in the rain. It turned out that the guy who shot most of them glued his subjects into position.
It has been fascinating to watch how certain images go "viral" on social media and rapidly are shared thousand and sometimes million of times.Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! But if the picture below is accurate, this lacewing's wings don't look like they fold over the body. Which is why it was mislabeled? Can you clarify? Insect specimens in collections are often "mounted" with their wings spread, even though that is not how hold their wings at rest. This is common with those orders that have showy wings, like butterflies. These are usually pinned specimens in glass topped drawers. Interestingly, dragonflies are usually not pinned in modern collections, but rather are placed in transparent 3x5 envelopes with a card containing all the specimen data, with their wings folded together over the back. Once insect specimens dry they are rigid and very fragile so envelopes keep all the parts together if they break and they can all still be examined with a microscope. Almost all the articles about this specimen refer to it as a "Jurassic-era insect" which is completely meaningless. It is a modern insect, nobody who knows what they are talking about refer to birds as "Cretaceous birds" for example, this is a silly and misleading way to describe it. And they are trying to make a big deal about it but it's still alive and well in western North America, so it isn't extinct. Humans probably eliminated some weed that was critical to one of the lacewing's life stages so they disappeared from most of the east.Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! However, there are no more cretaceous insects or cretaceous flowers. Their extinct. Well, now that you mention it, there are some dragonfly species that are considered to be Cretaceous in age. The Petaluridae family has only 10 surviving species and genetic and biogeographic analysis of Tanypteryx hageni and Tachopteryx thoreyi estimate their ages as 70 million years and 100 million year respectively. These are the only 2 Petalurids to survive in North America and they may be the 2 oldest living species on the planet. Ware, J., Beatty, C., Sanchez Herrera, M. et al. On a whim I signed up on ChatGPT and asked it a bunch of questions about dragonflies. There were lots and lots of errors and just plain fabrications of species names. I started with general questions and the answers were a bit vague. Later more direct questions about specific families and then individual species got answers that included the more general vague answers in error, but then just made up crap that was completely fictitious and so obviously wrong that it would be spotted by an expert.
Descriptions of the algorithm on the ChatGPT website says that it does NOT have access to the internet (this version, at least), so information may be spotty. I do not plan to correct any of the errors I see because I think this will have a huge negative influence on scholarship. Subjects like complex insect systematics and cladistics and other biological sciences require references that can be checked for relevance and accuracy for publication which may reveal the use of ChatGPT type applications to cheat.Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! This looks like a pretty good guide, Dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata) from Puerto Rico: a checklist with notes on distribution and habitat
