But it IS real
Conspiracy theories also seem to be more compelling to those with low self-worth, especially with regard to their sense of agency in the world at large.
quote:
The ones I'm seeing from ONE of my friends:
Chem-trails are toxifying the atmosphere and poisoning the planet
I hear this a lot!
U.S. West Coast completely contaminated with Fukushima radioactivity
The Feds are intercepting cellular and online communications
seems logical, but why monitor every call?
Monsanto = Death
this one is true
Fluoridated water kills
Vaccinations kill
Mermaids are real (see YouTube)
Collecting rainwater is becoming illegal across the U.S.
Other friend:
GMO Cloned Babies
Luciferian Agenda
There is an evil force.
Existence of transhumans
Illuminati children are sacrificing their classmates
Technocratic Revolution is happening
Feds are stockpiling bullets and coffins
Muslim Brotherhood wants to control our schools
I don't know which ones, if any, are true or have a hint of truth (Monsanto?, Fukushima?), but most sound pretty crazy and I don't bother to read about them at all.
For the most part, it seems the people who spend most of their day at home, online, and prone to supernatural belief, are the ones who start believing the craziest conspiracies.
Yes. I'll admit to supernatural belief. Jesus is alive.

Re: How can you tell?
Yesterday I watched one of those conspiracy movies.
There are some valid questions and arguments in the conspiracies themselves. Take 9-11. Building 7 almost certainly came down via a controlled explosion.
The Towers themselves similarly collapsed quite uniformly. There was an official commission that investigated, but perhaps Percy is right...part of my brain jumped into action after listening to this stuff.

Building 7 is the mystery, however. No planes hit it. Yet it came down in a somewhat controlled fashion.

I have some young men at work (safeway) who are smarter than average but who like looking up conspiracy theories on their i-phones. They will likely grow up to be systems engineers, biologists, and educated contributors to society as many of you now are.
Conclusion?
  • we live in a society driven by media sensationalism as an addiction to alleviate the boredom of modern life and an escape. Internet infotainment addiction is prevalent across all ages.
  • friends like to gather together to chill at starbucks and shoot the breeze.

    Truth? Or Simply Conservative Propaganda?
    ringo writes:
What kind of idiot gets their news from social media?
*looks nervously around while whistling Dixie*
I just saw one on YouTube yesterday. Of course, it was narrated by Jim Rickards, whom I patronize by buying his books occasionally. He is one of the You Tubians who I am accused of getting all my information, but I trust his credentials to a degree.
    Bio from Wiki
    quote:
Rickards graduated from Lower Cape May Regional High School in Cape May, New Jersey, in 1969.[2] He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors, and in 1974, from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. with an M.A. in international economics. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and an Master of Laws in taxation from New York University School of Law.[3]
He has held senior positions at Citibank, Long-Term Capital Management, and Caxton Associates.[4] As general counsel for the hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management (LTCM),[5] he successfully negotiated the US$3.6 billion rescue of the firm via the US Federal Reserve in 1998.[6] Rickards worked on Wall Street for 35 years.[7] Later, Rickards became the senior managing director at Tangent Capital Partners LLC, a merchant bank based in New York City,[8] and also the senior managing director for market intelligence at Omnis, Inc.,[9] a technical, professional and scientific consulting firm in McLean, VA.[3] On March 24, 2009, Rickards presented his view at a symposium at Johns Hopkins University, that the U.S. dollar was facing imminent hyperinflation and was vulnerable to attack from foreign governments through the accumulation of gold and the establishment of a new global currency.[10]
On September 10, 2009, Rickards testified before the U.S. House Science Subcommittee on Oversight about the risks of financial modeling, value at risk, and the 2008 financial crisis.[11]
He has also claimed he advised the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. intelligence community, and major hedge funds on global financial issues, and has served as a facilitator of the first ever financial war games conducted by The Pentagon. He also guest-lectures at The Kellogg School at Northwestern University and the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.[8] He states he was on the Advisory Board of the Center on Sanctions & Illicit Finance, a former organization within the Right-Wing think-tank and lobbying organization, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) in Washington DC.[4]

Anyway, Rickard's latest claim is that Digital Currency is being pushed--and pushed quickly--by the Biden administration. Nicknamed "Biden Bucks" this nefarious digital dollar will enable every user to be tracked and their purchases monitored. Of course for a fee, he offers a solution to this mess--which I won't swallow hook, line, and sinker.
I DO worry whether there is a need for concern regarding this governmental control and intrusion into my life. Yes, it will help corral people (*cough* Conservatives *cough*) who attempt to illegally stash money, but it will also force the average Joe to never be able to buy a precious metal or even sell a used car (apart from barter) without being digitally traced.
This all got on the fast track due to Executive Order 14067.
    Rickards writes:
Update: It is underway. On March 9, Biden signed Executive Order 14067, which could pave the way for the new US currency I call Biden Bucks. AOC tweeted her support. Dems could use this to hold onto power indefinitely.
Now...I'm not so worried about Dems holding on to power, though there is a related conservative charge that illegal aliens are streaming into the US at historic rates, and that among them are individuals from as far away as Pakistan. Apart from tilting the voter ranks towards favoring Democrats, which is far from conclusive, the worry is for the safety of the US mainland in general.
    Of course its controversial.

    Who are they?
I watch conservative, mainstream, and foreign (BBC and Al Jazeera) News outlets. "They" refer to varied groups and ideologies based on the media.
Take the Marthas Vineyard fiasco (and political stunt, in my opinion) Several "theys" are mentioned in media that Ive listened to. According to our conservative loudmouth Tucker Carlson, the enslaved ones are the "poor immigrants who are now under police control. He accuses "they"...the wealthy liberals on Martha Vineyard, of calling in the army to get them out of town. Of course, Tucker represents conservatism.
    Theodoric writes:
Some conservatives think they should be able to enslave other humans.
See what Tucker did? He blamed the wealthy liberals for shunning the aliens. He claims that Martha Vineyard could have absorbed them but the "wealthy liberals" said NIMBY.(Not In My Backyard.) I would not be happy if homeless people started camping out near my house, so I can see the argument to a degree. Several questions, though.
  • WHO sent these aliens to Martha Vineyard? Was it simply a political stunt?
  • Are there not also Conservatives who live in Marthas Vineyard? Is Tucker implying that only liberals live there? Or is he pretending to have empathy for the aliens?

Note that the comment you replied to was posted on 3/16/2019! How the hell was I supposed to know that you ignored my post from today and were replying to that? Agreed. Likely they thought that the liberals in power wanted to park all of the immigrants in poorer conservative towns so they shipped them to a wealthier town to prove a point.
I live in a closed retirement community with rules. If they shipped a bunch of people here, we would likely not open our patio doors to them. For one thing, old Biden is now not classifying anyone as illegal and seemingly wants to invite the poor disenfranchised masses of the whole world in. Conservatives claim that it becomes a security issue as well as a burden on the US.
    Denying Reality on Immigration
    quote:
DHS statistics show that from Biden’s Inauguration Day through May 2022—just 16 months and change—about 1.05 million migrants were apprehended on the southwestern border and then released into the U.S. That’s more than were apprehended on that border and released into the U.S. during the four years from Fiscal Year 2017 through Fiscal Year 2020. Under Biden, authorities have detained and released into the U.S. about 2,200 migrants a day on average—four times as many as the approximately 550 per day apprehended and released during the eight fiscal years preceding Biden. And these tallies don’t include unaccompanied minors, let alone the unknown sums of people who have evaded capture.
Now, I can understand why we need more people. Somebody has to work to pay my social security, for one thing.
