I can't moderate a debate I'm participating in, but I can answer your question. The Forum Guidelines try to discourage debate via link or external quotes while encouraging people to make their arguments in their own words while using links or quotes as supporting references. Links or quotes offered as additional information or context seems fine.

Particularly on the longer posts I find it difficult to only use the EvC site. What I do then is to use my microsoft word program and copy and paste from the site and then reply to a specific point in word and then copy and past the final word document back to EvC. Hope that helps. Unfortunately it doesn't help. I already tried copy/pasting from a Word document in Message 37 and wasn't able to cause a problem. I wonder if it matters which OS you're using. I use Word on a Mac. Do you use it on Windows?

During testing I'm unable to find any characters that cause problems. If someone can tell me where to copy/paste a character from that causes trouble then I'll be able to work on this. I'm sure such characters exist, I just can't find examples of them.

Do you mean in the email notification for replies? And you see the strange symbols in their quotes of what you said? If I have that right, can you forward one of these emails to admin?

Unicode characters can be 1, 2, 3 or 4 bytes. Encoding can be 8-bit or 16-bit. I've never really gotten into it because 99%+ of cases are handled automatically. I should be able to work out proper handling of exception cases, but while exception cases abounded a decade ago (the reason for the database cleanup I did a month or two ago), today I haven't yet been able to make any happen on purpose so I can study what's going on. I need an example case.

Again, I get those symbols as well when I read a post when it is emailed to me. Are you saying there are strange symbols in the above text? I don't see them in Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari. Is anyone else seeing strange symbols?

Here's a random selection of symbols from Microsoft Word:
• None of them work, but neither do they create weird symbols. I'll have to wait for an actual example before I can take any action.
