You're often incomprehensible, so I hope I've misunderstood you, but you seem to be endorsing racism, and Phat has seconded.

Re: Colin Powell called out McCain for not challenging the anti Arab sentiments of suppo
Responding to you and NosyNed, this is the portion I must be misinterpreting:
LamarkNewAge writes:
An old white lady said that she heard that Obama was "an Arab", and she said it with fear and trepidation.
John McCain then took her microphone, and gave perhaps the most disgraceful response in Presidential campaign history.
He defended Obama, against the "Arab" accusation, by saying, "No ma'am, he is a good, decent American that I happen to disagree with".
Wow!
I watched all the networks and only Wolf Blitzer seemed to notice what a totally racist response we all had to come to grips with.
LNA isn't deeming McCain's defense of Obama disgraceful and racist?

Re: Bob Dole, 98
xongsmith writes:
sorry, someone else will have to cite his accomplishments, other than his WWII service record.
Bob Dole was a Republican of the old breed with honesty, integrity and a sense of humor. His wife as Secretary of Transportation made the most visible contribution to automobile styling in over half a century. He lived with a serious WWII disability without complaint all his political life.

Re: Olivia Newton-John
This one hurts. Way too soon. From Olivia Newton-John - Wikipedia:
quote
In May 2017, it was announced that Newton-John's breast cancer had returned and metastasized to her lower back. Her back pains had initially been misdiagnosed as sciatica.
Newton-John subsequently revealed this was actually her third bout with breast cancer, as she had privately battled a recurrence of the disease in 2013 in addition to her initial 1992 fight.[141] With the 2017 recurrence the cancer had spread to her bones and progressed to stage IV.
Newton-John experienced a great deal of pain from the metastatic bone lesions and had openly spoken of using cannabis oil to ease her pain. She was an advocate for the use of medical cannabis. Her daughter Chloe owns a cannabis farm in Oregon.
On 8 August 2022, Newton-John died at her home in California, aged 73.

Ken Starr, 76
Ken Starr headed the Whitewater investigation of the Clintons which expanded into an investigation of an inappropriate sexual relationship with an intern. Ironically the Whitewater investigation turned up nothing prosecutable of the Clintons (though others were found guilty of criminal conduct), but Bill Clinton was impeached over the Monica Lewinsky affair. Also ironically, Starr was dismissed from Baylor Law School for the mishandling of sexual assault allegations.
Ken Starr, Independent Counsel in Clinton Investigation, Dies at 76 - The New York Times
In my own opinion Starr was a zealous straight-arrow straight-shooter who occasionally chose the wrong targets and then doggedly pursued them for way too long. There will be sexual affairs in all walks of life, and virtually everyone lies when caught. But the dogged pursuit side of this maybe goes along with the job, as witness that John Durham's investigation of the origins of the FBI's Russia investigation is in its third year with still virtually nothing worth mentioning to show for it, and the Republican Congress and then Trump pursued Hillary over her emails for like forever and indeed are still chanting, "Lock her up."

Phat writes:
The only thing I will say is that it seems that Liberals are much slower to forgive and forget than Conservatives.
That is just so true. Thank goodness we no longer hear claims about a trumped up FBI Russian investigation or about a fake Steele dossier or about a stolen 2020 election or about fake news or about Hillary's emails. It's all been forgotten and forgiven.
Likely the same with Starr.
Here's an editorial that views him sort of the same way I do: Ken Starr’s tragic misjudgment lives on in our politics. Relevant excerpts:
quote:
He is famous for his obsessive investigation of one case of sexual misconduct — but not for the allegations he failed to pursue with the rigor they deserved.
...
What started as a specific brief sprawled for years and began to look like an obsession.
...
I wish he had expressed similar profound sorrow for his damn-the-torpedoes crusade against Clinton and his destruction of Lewinsky’s life or his see-no-evil blindness about Trump. Or both. And if this is indeed the “Age of Impeachment,” no one did more to make it so than Kenneth Starr.

Re: Eric Jackson, WGBH jazz host
I remember Eric in the Evening very well, but not being a fan of the style of jazz he preferred I never listened very long. He was almost as much an institution as Robert J. Lurtsema.

Cardinal George Pell (1941-2023)
It was a complicated process, but Pell was ultimately acquitted.

Re: Jimmy Buffett
He had a massive Parrothead following. Some friends of ours saw him in concert dozens of times.
Buffet had a massive estate in Florida. A tennis buddy of mine was living down there around 30 years ago and knew one of the groundskeepers, and they would play tennis on Buffet's court occasionally. My friend met Buffet one day when he caught them playing, lost his temper and completely lost his mind. Needless to say my friend never played there again.

Dianne Feinstein Dies at 90
Ill for months and in poor health for years, Dianne Feinstein passed away yesterday at the age of 90. She served as mayor of San Francisco for ten years from 1978 to 1988, and served as senator from California from 1992 until her death.

Re: Tommy Smothers, 86
Almost no one remembers the original Smothers brothers' show. I think it only lasted one season. Tommy dies and comes back as an angel.
I loved their variety show. Pat Paulsen made his name there and I saw him in person once. I still remember one of the shows, the one where Nancy and Frank Sinatra Jr. sing "Something Stupid". At the break Dickie said they had a special guest coming up and that people should be able to guess who it was. After the break someone appeared in silhouette with a coat over their shoulder while the song "When I was 17" began. Then the lights came up and it was Tommy who said (paraphrasing since it's been a few years), "You didn't think a show like this could have a big star like Frank Sinatra, did you?"
I didn't see a lot of their shows because I was in college.
I didn't know anything about their comedy records until sometime later, maybe in grad school, someone introduced me to them.
