Another Minor Update
I've just released a bunch of very minor code changes that affect a lot of files. Behavior of the discussion board is unaffected, but these changes make the code simpler and easier to support. Please post here if you encounter any problems.

Re: Lost Formatting in Peek
Thanks for the tip. I've already fixed it.
What follows may fall under the "more than you wanted to know" category for some people.
This bug brought a larger problem to my attention. Older messages do not work with the new peek, so I'm simply going to rerender them, i.e., make them follow the same rendering rules as current messages.
But this will cause a change in their appearance. For example, in the prior rendering all quoted sections were followed by double spacing in the rendered message, whether the original text had double spacing or not. In the current rendering the spacing after a quote is up to the user: he can use either single or double spacing, his choice.
This means that an old message where the original text had single spacing after quotes was rendered with double spacing after quotes. When rerendered it will have only single spacing after quotes. If anyone objects to this type of change in old messages (older than a month) please post here.

All Old Messages To Be Rerendered
As mentioned in the previous message, one of the changes over the past year or so caused old messages posted prior to March 15, 2021, to be improperly displayed when peeked at or edited in textboxes. For example, if this were part of the original message text in the textbox of an old message:
quote:
This is statement 1
This is statement 2
Then when edited or peeked at, instead of seeing the above just as in the original the user will see this:
quote:
This is statement 1<p>This is statement 2
I'm fixing this by rerendering all the old messages so that they appear exactly as originally entered when peeked at or edited. (For those unfamiliar with html, <p> begins a new paragraph.)
At the same time I'm fixing characters that were misrendered during a period when the unicode standard was being gradually defined and adopted. For example, sometimes apostrophes would be represented by the characters "’", resulting in this example from Message 33:
Oddly enough, “science teacher” isn’t the term I’d use.
This will be rerendered as:
Oddly enough, “science teacher” isn’t the term I’d use.
Bare URL's (e.g., URL's that don't appear inside the dBCode) will also be rerendered. This will cause many URLs to change from being just the text of the URL into actual text. For example, this:
Would become this:
As mentioned in my previous message, the vertical spacing in old messages will also change in some cases. For example, it used to be that there was always double spacing after
, but now the vertical spacing will be the same as what was in the original text. If the text resumed on the line immediately following the list then there will be single spacing, while if there were additional lines after the list then double spacing will be used. It's possible to have more than double spacing, but you have to do it by including HTML tags like <br> or <p>.
I'll be beginning this rerendering effort soon, first backing up the database. It should take less than a day, but you shouldn't notice any performance issues or anything else.

The rerendering of messages has been completed. All messages are now editable and peekable.

Bare Image URLs Now Accepted in Messages
This was just posted at Message 13 in the Astrogeomanity - the periodic table of human evolution. pseudoscientific or not?! thread where it first came to my attention.
Bare image URL's are now recognized by the software. You no longer have to write this:

You can instead just write this:
https://evcforum.net/Images/EvCForumLogo.gif
In each case you'll get this:
When you use bare image URL's you won't be able to specify the width or the justification. For instance, this:

Produces this:
It wouldn't be possible to do this with a bare image URL. Image URLs that are accepted are GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG, SVG and ICO.

Re: A lot of testing
I apologize. I *was* testing mass email yesterday, and I still don't know how the code execution path escaped the testing guardrails I'd added. According to the mail log you received 57 (which is the number of members active in the last 90 days who have selected "yes" for receiving emails from the discussion board, but why that particular number I have no idea) emails over a brief period of about two and a half minutes. There were twenty other affected members, so apologies should go out to all these members (though I'm sure "testing" didn't mind since he has no actual email account):

Thankfully it only happened once. I don't remember everything I did yesterday, but evidently I detected that bug right away.
I'll be doing more testing of mass email soon, but during testing I rig the code so the only actual recipient is me with the intended recipient in the email body. In the updated design of the control panel's mass email feature the categories are:
 • All active members who've recently visited (last 90 days)
 • All active members who haven't recently visited
 • All active members
 • All inactive members
 • All members
 • All non-permanently suspended members
Only members who have elected to receive email from the discussion board are sent email, and permanently suspended members aren't included unless a box is checked.
I plan to send a mass email out soon to all members describing a few current discussions. It will include an "Unsubscribe" link that will set their "Receive board email" setting to "No."

Mass Email Just Sent
I'm sending out a mass email in two stages. I just completed the first stage by sending the email to all members who have visited the site in the last 90 days and have elected to receive emails from the discussion board. I'd appreciate it if a few people could verify they received the email, and also any feedback.
The next stage will be to send the same email to the rest of the membership.

One point - I don’t think that a thread last updated in May can be counted as an “active thread”.
I agree, but I wanted at least one thread on the creation/evolution topic. I'm open to suggestions.

Re: Mass Email Just Sent
I would love to automate it. One advantage to automating is for updates to the email list, but another is as a pane on EvC Forum's Facebook page. But for this time around I was thinking of it as a one time thing.

I can't see any reason you shouldn't have received it. I'm going to click on the "Email this thread" link. Let me know if anything arrives.

Mass Email to Non-recently Active Members Sending Now
I modified the email to say that the older thread hasn't been recently active.
Initial indications are that the emails of about 1/3 of members who haven't visited within the last 90 days are no longer valid.

Re: Mass Email Just Sent
I'm going to say more than you need to know because this post will serve as a record for what I learned.
Emails from EvC Forum are being blocked by your email service's spam checker. I checked the mail log and saw this (I've inserted some formatting for readability):
Sep 17 11:39:49 qwixotic postfix/smtp[354538]: D96286604FC: to=,
relay=mx.centurylink.net[206.152.134.65]:25, delay=8817, delays=8786/0.27/30/0, dsn=4.7.1,
status=deferred
(host mx.centurylink.net[206.152.134.65] refused to talk to me: 550 5.7.1 [C16]
RBL Restriction: See Abusix Intelligence | Abusix)
Following the Abusix link, it says this:
Abusix:
This list contains domains and IPs that we have seen being used links in the message body of spam.
Grammatical error is theirs. Abusix thinks evcforum.net is fine. The domain it thinks has the problem is qwixotic.com, which is the domain for the company that owns EvC Forum that isn't used at all except as the domain for the server itself. But qwixotic.com runs no email service, and it would be pointless to put that domain in the body of an email because I never created a webpage for it. The control panel just throws up a default webpage. Just for the heck of it I just now added a default webpage that says only "Qwixotic".
I use free online blockcheckers that check with dozens of blocklisting services, and our IP isn't listed at any of them, including three Abusix lists:
BlacklistReasonTTLResponseTime
OK
Abusix Mail Intelligence Blacklist604
OK
Abusix Mail Intelligence Domain Blacklist4
OK
Abusix Mail Intelligence Exploit List3
I think Abusix is screwing up somewhere. I put in a request to be removed from the list, but I won't be surprised if nothing happens. Yes, your email arrived, but my replies won't get through until Abusix takes me off their list.
