Don't all guns start out legal? Aren't they all purchased legally from the factory? The good guys with guns are obeying the laws.... So how do they magically get into the hands of bad guys? It seems to me that the obvious answer is: At some point, the "responsible" gun owners are not all that responsible."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

We have a similar issue going on here right now. A while back, a young fellow went to the emergency room asking for mental health help. They made an appointment for him and sent him away. Hours later, he returned to the emergency room saying he felt suicidal. Security guards threw him out. Hours later, his dead body was found in a lake a mile away. We have never funded mental health.... During the last couple of years we have had almost as many deaths from suicide and drug overdoses as we have had from covid.

Another anecdote: In the 60s there was an armed robbery in Toronto. Somebody was killed. Police caught the perpetrator and recovered the gun. They traced it back to the Colt factory in Hartford, Connecticut and to the gun shop that had bought it from the factory and to the first person that had bought it from the gun shop. Then they traced it though a dozen or so owners - one had bought it for his girlfriend and she didn't want it so he sold it to a friend, etc. The gun had changed hands a dozen times before it was used in a murder and except for the first two transactions, every one of them was illegal. And everyone who owned that gun, except for the murderer, would probably consider himself a "responsible gun owner". Colt is a great example. They have a website where you can look up a gun by the serial number.... Message 944"I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

As I have suggested before in this thread, the reason gun laws don't work is because many of the self-styled "responsible gun owners" are not obeying the laws. They are the ones who are putting the guns into the hands of the perpetrators. It doesn't matter how strict the laws are if "law-abiding" gun owners don't abide by them. ...the issue is not gun laws, it's thinking utterly stupid gun laws would actually do something....Edited by ringo, . Maybe the desire to do violence. But again, the problem is violence not guns. But the violence - or the degree of violence - is, in fact, caused by the guns. There's a reason why mass-killers choose guns to do their violence instead of teaspoons. Guns were invented for killing people. They're very efficient at it. If you want to kill a lot of people in a hurry, guns are your best choice. Try killing twenty people with a teaspoon."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

I use that example to illustrate the fact that it IS the weapon that determines the degree of violence, NOT the state of mind of the perpetrator. No matter how insanely violent people are, they can not ACT on their violent urges without the weapon.
Are you sure you can't come up with a method of killing other than the choice of guns or a teaspoon? jar writes:
Oh, I have no illusions about the reality. Nothing is going to be done. And again, reality. There are over 400 MILLION guns already in the US. As I have said before, when the last American shoots the second-last American, we invade."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

My favorite whipping boys are idiots. Gun nuts and conservatives tend to fit into that category. It also includes anti-science nuts, religious nuts, etc. Plenty of whips for all of you. Am I getting a whiff of, "Ordinary citizens need to be armed to protect themselves from the government?" Are gun control advocates completely comfortable and content with domestic agencies of the U.S. government being heavily armed? I know your nation is built on treason but most "revolutionary governments" tend to be rapidly opposed to counter-revolutions. If you're planning on rising up against your government, it's probably a good thing that you finally found out they were armed."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

1. I am not a Democrat, so I don't presume to know what they think. Do Democrats rejoice at this sort of thing?2. I don't necessarily "rejoice" but I do approve. In Canada, confiscated weapons go to the local steel mill to be melted down into pipelines. I wonder if they have plans to bulldoze anything else in the future, after the public is more completely disarmed?
I wish they had plans to further disarm the public.
Maybe older cars that cause climate change?

If the government comes after me, I'll fight them at the ballot box, not by shooting them. You'll notice that Ringo, and his green dot providers have no problem with antique cars also being crushed by government. They must have hobbies that don't include antique cars, that they think are no threat to the environment, and they have no fear of government crushers coming after them next."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

As I have said before, pointing out to a fat person that he is fat is not "name-calling" per se. It may be rude, insensitive, etc. but he has no right to feel insulted. Embarrassed maybe but not insulted. Keep in mind, however, though name calling is socially and intellectually vapid, that in no way alters the fact that you really are an idiot."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

Several years ago, on another forum, an American was saying he had visited Vancouver and he was glad he was "packing". First I told him I didn't believe it was that easy to smuggle guns into Canada. (Our border guards are constantly encountering Americans who don't realize that you can't cross the border with a trunk full of guns.) ... you know you're free when you're packing and are constantly peering around every corner on the lookout for threats. Then I pointed out to him that millions of Canadians walk those streets every day unarmed."Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." -- motto of the Special Olympians

As I have suggested before, ALL guns were legal when they were manufactured. The thieves are getting them from "responsible gun owners". With such legislation in place, would the thieves still be able to get their guns illegally?"Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." -- motto of the Special Olympians
