Several years ago I found myself listening to a lecture at Griffith University as part of an Environmental Science course. The lecturer told us all about Gaia, a manifestation of paganism which is apparently something science students need to know about. Weird.
It has nothing to do with anything "pagan". Mother Gaia is just the human's inner voice, like the serpent in Genesis 3 was Eve's inner voice.

Dredge, I assume your harbor side park bench is on the island nation of Travalu. From this article:
"Already, two of Tuvalu’s nine islands are on the verge of going under, the government says, swallowed by sea-rise and coastal erosion. Most of the islands sit barely three metres above sea level, and at its narrowest point, Fongafale stretches just 20m across." Or are you on the Alaska coast: "Rising sea levels have eroded an Inupiat Eskimo village for decades. Now, residents of Shishmaref, Alaska, have officially voted to relocate. The island community, located near the Bering Strait, opted to move rather than remain in place with added safety measures to protect against the rising waters." Or are you just a Republican, I.e., someone who just doesn't give a damn about anyone else's problems. Your name is so appropriate for this topic.

It is more likely that he told you about The Gaia hypothesis, which has nothing to do with paganism, other than that they borrowed the name from Greek mythology.Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

I attended a lecture by James Lovelock, I think in the early 80s. It was fascinating and he did a good job connecting various cyclic processes in earth's systems along with the effects life has on these systems and how feedback moderates changes, based on the data available at that time.
This was also the same period of time when we were ramping up space based monitoring of the biosphere, weather and climate. We have been collecting data and modelling results with increasing resolution and precision at increasing rates ever since. I'm pretty sure I read a couple of his books too.Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! Scary. You find an incoming tide scary? You should have stayed a few more hours to witness the tide go out, and then your fears would have abated. The rate of sea level rise differs around the world, but it averages around a third of a centimeter per year. Mindless indolence down by the docks is fine. You should be more concerned about the amount of mindless indolence you spend here. --Percy

The other day I found myself sitting on a park bench down at the harbour ... Yes, I can imagine you frozen in fear your heart going pitted-patter and your mind stuck in prayer begging god anything, anything, if only he would keep the ocean from rising up and drowning you. I'm sure this was a major concern of yours in your apocryphal tale. You don't take science seriously so I'm supposing you feel the same about the science of climate change. What kind of conspiracy do you attach to that? Satan floating around heavy breathing on all the test thermometers to fool the scientists?Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned!

Well ... almost. I started screaming hysterically that the ocean was rising and was beginning to panic, when some people nearby told me it was only the tide coming in. I hadn't thought of that.

Thankfully he wasn't at the Bay Of Fundy!

Ah yes ... Tuvalu. Courtesy of relentless climate-change propaganda, we're well aware of those islands here in Australia. Dredge, I assume your harbor side park bench is on the island nation of Travalu. From this article: "Already, two of Tuvalu’s nine islands are on the verge of going under, the government says, swallowed by sea-rise and coastal erosion. Most of the islands sit barely three metres above sea level, and at its narrowest point, Fongafale stretches just 20m across." Thousands of years ago the Tuvalu islands were probably volcanic mountains of considerable height, but they've slowly been sinking back into the sea and are now reduced to low-lying coral atolls. Coral atolls are often roughly circular or cresent-shaped, because the last part of the mountains to disappear beneath the waves is the volcanic crater on top.So it's entirely possible that Tuvalu is sinking, rather than being swallowed up by a rising ocean. Furthermore, Tuvalu is situated on the notoriously volcanic "the Ring of Fire", which is comprised of the most tectonically active and unstable regions on earth. Since tectonic plates can move up or down (think of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that originated in Indonesia), it's possible a downwards-moving tectonic plate could be contributing to Tuvalu's problems, rather than rising sea levels.
Or are you on the Alaska coast:
Shishmaref is situated very close to the "Ring of Fire", so maybe it's problems are due to vertical tectonic movement, not rising sea levels."Rising sea levels have eroded an Inupiat Eskimo village for decades. Now, residents of Shishmaref, Alaska, have officially voted to relocate. The island community, located near the Bering Strait, opted to move rather than remain in place with added safety measures to protect against the rising waters." If the oceans are indeed rising, they will be rising at every point of every coastline on the planet, yet all we've heard about for the last twenty years are the problems at the grand total of TWO locations - Tuvalu and Shishmaref. Funny, that. Your name is appropriate for this topic.
Thank you.

... it's possible a downwards-moving tectonic plate could be contributing to Tuvalu's problems, rather than rising sea levels. It's possible Eleanor Roosevelt flew around the White House but the experts dismiss this as a nothing probability. Yes, the Tuvalu's are sinking but it is not seamount settling but ocean rise. All the evidence and all the experts say climate change. But you don't believe in evidence and fact. You only believe in lie. And did you think we didn't already hear of Tuvalu years ago and already know the facts? You so boldly lie? You got more lies you want to try to spread?
If the oceans are indeed rising, they will be rising at every point of every coastline on the planet ... Not surprised this is the extent of your critical thinking abilities. This is bogus and the science knows it. They've measured. They measure constantly ... aaalllll over this world, 24 x 7 x 365. That's what NOAA and Woods Hole and dozens of others do all day. Care to guess what lie you just tried to tell that they refute? For a catholic you sure lie a lot. Why? Is that part of the catechism?Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned!

Funny, that. Please explain that to the owners of these house: House collapses into ocean along North Carolina’s Outer Banks And closer to home for you: Luxury homes in Australia are falling into the ocean - CNN Video And these people in the UK ("Britain's collapsing coastline"): Britain's collapsing coastline | Behind The Story And along Old Cape Cod: Cape Cod homes are falling into the sea. It’s never been more popular - or expensive The global climate crisis isn't just causing sea level rise, which is currently very gradual at less than a centimeter a year, but is causing significantly harsher storms and hurricanes, much higher storm surges, and much faster coastal erosion. The owners of those homes will be relieved to hear that only two remote areas are being affected. How are we going to re-educate all those foolish Aussies who voted Morrison out and Albanese in primarily over climate issues? Just because he promoted "A politics that denied, and sometimes even mocked, the seriousness of the climate crisis - as Treasurer, Morrison laughingly brandished a lump of coal in parliament. "
