Two bits of news
"Two Russian strikes have hit Kyiv, officials say, as UN chief Antonio Guterres is in the city for talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky"
Russia apparently doesn't feel the need to make friends and influence the UN.
And, more hopefully
"President Biden is asking Congress to approve a record $33bn aid package for Ukraine, including more arms"
The gas issue is a problem though, it could split the EU

So Putin sent 2 missiles into central Kyiv while the head of the UN was still very publicly in it.
How can Russia still be part of the UN and have a veto?

Awkward
(Reuters) - Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Wednesday on Twitter that his Indonesian counterpart had invited him to attend the summit of Group of 20 (G20) major economies to be held in the Southeast Asian country later this year.
Zelenskiy did not confirm whether he would accept the invitation to the summit on the island of Bali in November. Russia has said its President Vladimir Putin plans to attend.

There's talk of Putin finally calling this a war on the May 9th Victory Day parade and fully mobilising Russia.
Obviously he'd only do that because he's losing, but I'm wondering what military and political difference it would make.

10th Russian general killed. It's some kind of record.
quote:
Major General Andrei Simonov reportedly died after his command post came under artillery fire by Ukrainian forces on Saturday April 30. The bombardment also took out more than 30 Russian armoured vehicles, including tanks. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show the command post being hit by Grad rockets, fired from a multiple-launch rocket system.

Looks like they very nearly got the commander too
VLADIMIR Putin's top military commander has been wounded in Ukraine and was sent back to Russia just days after he arrived to take charge of the war.
The Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov had been sent by Putin to take personal control of his push to grab territory in Donbas and eastern Ukraine.

This, at least is good news.
WASHINGTON, May 3 (Reuters) - Two months after warning that Beijing appeared poised to help Russia in its fight against Ukraine, senior U.S. officials say they have not detected overt Chinese military and economic support, a welcome development in the tense U.S.-China relationship.

Also it looks like the EU is going to embargo oil and gas from Russia and sanction anybody suspected of war crimes.
Sadly though, the Russians are storming Mariupol. Despite Putin saying they'll siege it. Apart from just being a liar, I suspect he just needs a victory there at any cost before the 9th and he'll want the forces elsewhere; what's left of them.

Re: We’re Still Scared of Putin
It feels more like we're boiling the frog to me.
We're escalating the help we're giving Ukraine, step by step trying not to give Putin excuses to do something planet threatening. I'd say that was being sensible not being scared. But sure, this is a man that possesses the power to blow up the world, he needs to be handled.
And, of course, what is said publicly is not necessarily what is actually happening. Was it a coincidence that the chief of staff, Valery Gerasimov, was hit shortly after arriving in Ukraine? And 10 Russian generals targeted and killed?
The Ukrainians are getting their intelligence from somewhere.

Re: We’re Still Scared of Putin
Putin is left with a bit of a conundrum when complaining about what intelligence the West is giving Ukraine about such things as exactly where ships are so that they can be targeted.
According to them, the Moskva was sunk by a fire, not a missile.

It's a 100 days of the war now and it seems that the war is turning slightly in Putin's favour. Focussing on the East and simply destroying cities with long range artillery that the Ukrainians have few answers to and not caring about their own losses is working.
When I was away I caught a news article reporting that Russia would be forced to take some action or other if the US provided the Ukrainians with missile systems but I see that they are now to get
“ advanced rocket systems that can strike with precision at long-range Russian targets as part of a $700 million weapons package expected to be unveiled on Wednesday.” Reuters.
And they were also supposed to get artillery from Germany that had a longer range than the Russians.
The question is, why is it taking so long to do this?
The reason given is that it turns the West's help from defensive to offensive - but this seems like playing with words. The Ukrainians have promised not to use the missiles on Russian territory - presumably old Russian territory - but I'm pretty sure that promise could have been made 100 days ago.

I see that Putin's de-Nazification of Ukraine involves threatening Jews in Russia.

Re: How seriously are we taking what Putin says these days?
I'm hoping that the looming global food shortages are going to force the West to break the blockade of Ukrainian ports. Doing that would change the game but so far the West is shying away from making that commitment feeling that that could be a declaration of war.
The annoying thing is that if they gave more weapons faster, Ukraine could stop the Russians dead and even push them back.
There's some pieces of this jigsaw that we don't know about.

Re: The War Drags On
Percy writes:
Sanctions have not yet brought Russia to its knees, but any minute now.
Sanctions take years.
Russian military incompetence has not yet ended the war, but their luck can't hold out much longer.
Their ineptitude in failing to take the whole country in a few weeks means that this will now go on for many years.
The West continues to ignore the Russian nuclear threat by providing increasing amounts of aid and assistance to Ukraine, but they've got to come to their senses soon.
No idea what this means, the nuclear threat has always been there and still is.
Russia knows that invading a NATO country would mean its end, so the panicked alarms of bordering NATO countries can be ignored.
Ditto above.
Meanwhile, Russia is now a pariah, it's economy is being comprehensively trashed and the West is more organised then it ever was.
What else were you expecting? Real politic tends be tricky.
