Texas Toast
The new IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, April 2022, https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg3/, is being seen as a positive view of our issues with climate change. They have not retracted any of the gloom and doom that befalls us if we don’t act but they have cheered on a detailed set of mitigation strategies and efforts that will save us. It is a very positive and upbeat document showing there is a plan, there is a way out of the burning forest.
What we need do is to do all those things we should have been doing for the last 70 years and do it all, plus more, in the next 30 years. Mitigate it all in the next 30 years. Drop CO2 and other levels enough to limit temperature increases to 1.5°C and do it all in the next 30 years. Rah! Rah! Go Humans!
So, if we put our present efforts that haven’t worked so far and a few other future efforts on steroids and achieve an unprecedented level of international cooperation willing to endure some economic disruptions then we can avoid this coming tipping point. If we miss this, then Earth is toast.
Texas Toast, with a burnt on Jesus.

I find myself continuously astonished that the greedy and corrupt fossil fuel industry, as a section of our civilization, have not been the ones leading the charge to develop every possible non-carbon energy technology. It's going to be worth TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS if we can get it developed and deployed sooner than 30 years, otherwise we are toast as you point out.
I think we're toast because it seems like a huge segment of the global population want civilization to fail. I can really only think of 2 reasons for their desires.
1). Religious fervor.
2). If civilization fails, so do the restraints of civilized behavior imposed by society.
And they will also blame the fall of civilization on those trying to save it...

Have you seen the Washington announcement about opening limited tracks of public lands for drilling?
https://www.nbcnews.com/...-drilling-federal-lands-rcna24646
We're supposed to be doing the fucking opposite!
We have the tech to move off more carbon fuels and here we go mine and burn more.
Joe Biden. Democrats. Americans. We were supposed to reverse Trump and at least try to save the planet.
We were supposed to end carbon production in 30 years not light new fires that will continue to burn well past then; well past the coming tipping point.
We are fucked! We are bigger fucked than we knew. This, our best hope for some actual climate change intellect in the government, just spit in our face and struck up another field of gas flares.
Fucking disgusting!
I cry.

Well, we gotta keep those oil and coal and gas subsidies rolling, no matter what. The GOP fucked us and the Dems don't have the balls to do the right thing.

Re: Texas Toast
Texas is certainly doing it's best to help.
Texas has passed legislation to ban any company or organization from doing any business with the State or local governments that attempts to divert investments from coal, oil or natural gas to wind, solar or geothermal power sources.

They are much the same thing. There is nothing like religion to whip people into a frenzy in which they can discard their religion's moral teachings in order to serve it better -- doing what god would do if he were in possession of all the facts.
We see a similar bad faith mechanism at play with conspiracists. I doubt many people genuinely believe, per the Q-ninnies, that Hillary Clinton slices faces from children so that she can dance naked wearing the bloody mask at satanic revels. Or that high ranking Democrats participate in an affiliated global pedophile ring.
But, like method acting, once you focus on feeling the outrage, you gain tremendous energy and license. What acts cannot be justified in the name of that poor child? Who wouldn't righteously overturn a fairly run election in order to stop the homosexual recruitment of children? Devils and demons can't cast valid votes!
To recast Augustine: Hate, and do what you will.
So the only GOP platform is accusation. So everything is allowed.
The truly massive tragedy on the southern border will arrive with an outpouring of climate refugees. Almost certainly we will slaughter them -- pointlessly, since the fire will follow hard on their heels.
I lean on a hard hope: that our means of global climate disruption collapse before the planet becomes inimical to all life. As I near my own end, like Rutger Hauer in Bladerunner, I love life more than my own instance of it -- or my kind.
May our civilization fail in time.

Rationally I agree, but I haven't quite given up all hope yet that we will somehow get our shit together and save the planet, but then I look around.
I have a 21 year old grandson stationed on Guam in the Airforce and a 16 year old granddaughter in high school. I despair for their future! My 2 best friends have grandkids too and we often worry together about them.

Re: Texas Toast
Power is back on! Let the carbon times roll!
I had hope when I helped organize the first Earth Day activities in high school, more than 50 years ago, and for a long time after ... speaking out, organizing, protesting, donating, voting ...
If April is the cruelest month, hope is its cruelest flower. If only we could persuade the evangelicals that carbon is the devil's tool. But they cannot even stop adoring the Orange Ass.
I've been reading what we know about the prior great extinctions. When I walk about and enjoy the avian magic, I consider that we both emerged through such bottlenecks -- and we're killing them all.
Of all the members of the predator guild in ice age Europe, only us and the wolf (and the wolf-dog) survived. Now we slaughter the few remaining wolves, and our dogs are useless bits of yipping fluff.
It's not impossible that we might dramatically change course, but there's no evidence of the ability or the will.
So I can't call my occasional bouts of magical thinking hope. Maybe the UFOs that the DoD says sometimes shut down the electronics in nuclear installations will save us. Maybe Gandalf.

Thats quite an interesting cartoon! Personally, I don't believe in that pagan stuff, but the whole intellectual/empathetic point is valid.
And the science is, unfortunately, also valid. We are inevitably destined to reap what we have sown.

"A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." ~Mark Twain "

“…far from science having buried God, not only do the results of science point towards his existence, but the scientific enterprise itself is validated by his existence.”- Dr.John Lennox

H. Richard Niebuhr, The Kingdom of God in America

“The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of a doubt, what is laid before him.” — Leo Tolstoy, The Kingdom of God is Within You

It has nothing to do with anything "pagan". Mother Gaia is just the human's inner voice, like the serpent in Genesis 3 was Eve's inner voice. It takes the form of "somebody" telling you a truth that you don't want to hear. It is not a separate entity. It could have been done with a soliloquy.

Insect Populations Crashing
The Two Drivers of Massive Insect Population Die-Off Have Finally Been Identified : ScienceAlert
That title says it all. The bugs that keep our ecosystems going and are vital to feed the world are dying off. Intensive agriculture and climate change are the drivers meaning humans are the cause.
Among the problems we've caused are the clearing of massive swaths of their natural habitat, introduction of toxic chemicals into their environments, and rising temperatures, all causing widescale declines or changes in species abundance.
We found that in high intensity agriculture that has also seen substantial warming, abundance and richness are reduced by 49% and 27% relative to primary vegetation where there has been little warming. pic.twitter.com/yusvGpdtdf
— Charlie Outhwaite (@CharlieLouO) April 20, 2022
In areas with still natural habitats the decline is significant at 7%. In areas of intensive agriculture away from the natural habitats the declines are up to a staggering 63%.
Some bugs may follow us into extinction but that is a very prolific phylum of life and they will adapt. But probably not before we die out first.
With around 5.5 million species, insects make up around half of all known living things on Earth. This is a massive chunk of all the existing life we know of in the Universe, and we don't yet fully understand to what extent we've messed it up.
I think we've mentioned this before but just to cry wolf ...
Wolf! Wolf! We are killing ourselves. Stop the wolf!
