Re: Warren
Hey Theo, Warren is a touchstone for me. I think Ronstadt's cover of Poor Poor Pitiful Me may be his most radio recognizable song. I prefer his original version which is darker and funnier.
As you note, The Wind, his last album, was recorded after his terminal mesothelioma diagnosis. His previous two albums sound like foreshadowing: My Ride's Here and Life'll Kill Ya (which included the title track and the poignant Dont Let Us Get Sick). But he partied with Hunter S Thompson beyond mortal bounds (yay Dionysus! Mad honey!), so what sounds premonitory was also a good guess. Still, it's not an irony that his terminal illness stemmed from youthful workplace exposure rather than a lifetime of too much of everything the modern pharmucopia has to offer, just a lime twist.
Warren was as uneven as he was high and low, smart and doomed, and unapologetic through it all. I'd urge anyone familiar only with his early rollicking, satirical songs to listen to The Wind. He knew he had less than a year to live. It's existential-angsty (Rub Me Raw) and funny (My Dirty Life and Times). There's nothing for creative focus like being hanged in the morning.
He was my kinda rocker.

Re: Warren
No great truths to report. I survived a stroke, and I alone have returned to tell you we're all going to die, and that's okay. I celebrated my 70th birthday dancing around a two story bonfire with my rowdy, Trump-loving friends.
I remarried my ex (24 yrs first round, 8 years of divorce, 2+ years of the second round, so far).
I learned I want all the kittens, but the house is full with 4 grown cats. I want a puppy and a horse.
I discovered that even I had underestimated the stupidity of the American people; fortunately, I had no money riding on my estimate.
I stayed off the web, other than to use it as an information/communication device. I'm typing this on my Android phone, having had no computer set up for years now, though one is coming soon.
I suspect there are no grand truths. To stand in the presence of something true, one must either draw a very small circle or play with a kitten.
Thanks much for the welcome. I'm less sure of just about everything now, but once I get my hands on a keyboard, some opinions may arise.

Re: Warren
Thank you! I've been reminded of your flying gems and you often along the streams in my woods. I've been bringing road kill to a pair of ravens nesting nearby; their curiosity brings them ever closer. They've taken to doing a turn or two above my cabin each day, croaking what could be hello friend but is probably that squirrel tartare needs salt.

Re: Warren
I'm glad you also returned, Theo. Welcome back!
A question I often asked when I was younger: Why me? Then, of course, it was a misery.
Now I've buried so many, I feel like the last man standing, asking in bemusement, Why me?
Many years ago, an army surgeon told me all you hillbillies are hard to kill. Maybe that's it.
The Wind was a "breakup album" for us while we processed our divorce. Keep Me ... could move us both to tears.

Yes, cat feedings are always late -- nature of the beast.
But if you turn down the heat, they will cuddle.
Nor'easter blowing in now, looking for 6-12" here in the high Mohawk Valley/Adirondack foothills. It could be a 4 cat night.

Re: funerals
Be careful what you wish for. To live forever in the perfect mess we've made would be ...
quote:
“For I once saw with my own eyes,” states The Waste Land’s ominous epigraph, “the Cumean Sibyl hanging in a jar, and when the boys asked her, ‘Sibyl, what do you want?’ she answered, ‘I want to die'”
