Re: R E S P E C T
There are likely a few reasons why Nixon did what he did, decoupling the dollar from gold. This may be a clue:
different Taq writes:
The only reason gold Fiat Currencies have any value relative to their parental Central Banks at all is that the Central Bank in their region and/or the government backs the currency with assets, gold being one of them.
The full faith of the government in question is based in part on the value of their currency. Venezuela's economy spun out of control but the oil-backed national transactions allowed them to come out of it Russia's commodity resources (including the gold holdings of the Central bank) keep them from totally collapsing...though they are getting closer. International condemnation works against them in that they have nobody to trade with...yet. The reason Russia could not rescue the ruble with their gold is the pressure the US Central Bank (Federal Reserve) has in holding down the price....only to "protect" the dollar from hyperinflating. Its a giant chess game and a Ponzi Scheme in line with a future Black Swan Event.
The fact that you guys think the dollar will remain stable only because the rest of the world is also holding Fiat Currencies is ignorant.
Can oil and China help Russia survive Western sanctions? Counting the Cost

He did tell me no rush! It's enough for me to get ready for work every day, and by the time I get home I am dog tired.
After Phat's apocalypse, I wonder if he thinks he can buy $1997 worth of goods with a 1-ounce gold coin?
Phat knows that the gold will rise (in value relative to fiat currencies)and that one ounce of gold (likely a more honest valuation)will for a time preserve wealth in dollars by rising with the tide. Its not a matter of $2000.00 in gold being worth x amount. Its a matter of the price of things relative to the price of gold. I likely would be able to trade 1 ounce of gold for perhaps $4000.00 worth of dollars. Food may, however, be scarce and may well cost $3000.00 for a basket that at one time cost $500.00. The time to buy items such as tools and durable goods is now. Not then.
1. What do you think the sequence of events would be if the economic calamity you fear happens?
I wouldn't call it a calamity just yet. More of a reset. A correction in the actual value of currencies.
1a. What are the banks going to do with their gold?
Keep it as a basis for launching a new digital currency. Only a fool would go with Crypto vs the time-honored hunk of metal.
1b. What are countries going to do with their gold?
Im not yet sure, but I imagine that they would hold onto it until a new global reserve is established.
2. What are you going to do with your gold? Say you have a quarter-sized piece of gold, what are you going to do with it?
I may try and sell it for a few loaves of bread for my family or for ringo and the bum under the bridge. He claims I don't ever do what Jesus suggests, so I will be asking the Lord what to do at that point in time. Most likely it will be insurance for my family's money...which will either inflate, deflate, or collapse along with everyone else.
And do you realize that the price is entirely artificial because those gold bullion hoarding entities keep it squirreled away from the economies? If it was all flowing through the planet's economies it wouldn't be worth squat.
The price is being suppressed to defend the US Dollar. A foolish move but too late to stop.

Conservatives, Liberals, and a Secular Future
The "Religious Right is not My Religious Right. I voted for Biden--not Trump. If Trump were in power now, I shudder to think how this war would turn out. Would he side with Putin over NATO?
I was simply making liberalism personal with Theodoric since he made Anti Semitism into a personal issue with me. There will always be points of contention regarding morality.
I am glad that you initially defended me, but I notice that you then jumped to defending liberals in general. Is the political divide that sensitive for you? You do know that once inflation really begins to wreck our economy, the ignorant masses will blame Biden rather than the real villain--the Federal Reserve.
The Federal Reserve will be unable to stop inflation, but they won't care. They will defend the dollar--even against Gold.
I fear that the Liberals are less worried about exponentially increasing debt.
In their defense, however, I believe that if Gold goes up relative to the dollar, Conservatives will welcome it more than Liberals.
And on a personal note, I fear that this war will be the final nail in the coffin that will accelerate global warming.
An Apocolypse is coming be it sacred or secular. And FYI, Alcohol likely will be as good of an investment as gold, but keep in mind that Hops is a commodity too.

Re: Conservatives, Liberals, and a Secular Future
And gambling is an addiction that addicts go to great lengths to rationalize.
Over the course of my life I have lost my retirement to gambling. I now undergo regular counseling and am sober from it. Getting back to Conservatives and Liberals and economic repercussions for the future, I will go out on a limb to say that Conservatives dont mind debt if it helps them earn money in the long run. Liberals are more inclined to see no need for anything to back the global fiat currencies except for prior human agreement and cooperation.
*snap* the limb is cracking!

everyone here tends to dogpile me and say things like "we told you" or "we tried to tell you". I'm just returning the point. Don't be offended...a large majority of people in the United States don't understand finance.
Theodoric seems to think gold is like soybeans and that the dollar determines the price/value of gold. I think that the statement is wrong yet most of you share that view.
Time will tell who understands what and if I live that long I will see reality as it is

It is down over $100/oz from its high in the last month or about 5%. The Dow jones is up 6% from its low.
Look at the last 30 years. How well did the Dow do?
How was inflation? How well did Gold do?

Re: Phat and gold
Actually the metals keep me from gambling. I can lock them away in a safety deposit box. Even if I had an urge to gamble, I would have to go retrieve them and sell them for less than what I bought them for.
My gambling addiction is stable. I am in group meetings and counseling and plan on staying sober.
In today's risky economy, commodities are no gamble. Sometimes I think that you liberals want fiat money to expand unendingly. You would not mind if all fiat money was under public control. Heck, you might even accept negative real interest rates if social progress were made. Moderates and conservatives want control of their money. No government has full right to do that.

Do Both Sides Offend?
Recently I was challenged by bringing up Ben Shapiro, which got me thinking about Conservative values vs Liberal values.
Can religion be kept out of such discussions, given that it plays a large role in defining people's chosen morality?
Lets examine a few social memes presented on the internet.
Which of these have truth and which are propaganda and lies? That is the next question.
I would amend this one a bit. If we removed God from the equation, Conservatives would place man above government while liberals might place government first.
It seems to be true that religious views are less tolerated publically than are humanist views.
I've no comment on the last one except to say that it seems about right.

Re: Roe v Wade is coming down.
Try this link.
[url=http://gorhistory.com/hist111/1970sand1980s.htmlhttp://gorhistory.com/hist111/1970sand1980s.html]
I guess the website is not secure, according to my computer.
Anyway, try this one:
quote:
Liberal - Derived from Middle English term liberalis, meaning befitting free men. Also the Latin term liber meaning freedom .
Adjective = broad-minded, favorable to progress or reform.
Noun = a person with broad-minded, progressive views, especially in politics or religion.
While liberal thought has a long history, modern liberal thought began with the Enlightenment by rejecting many earlier theories of government - The Divine Right of Kings, hereditary status, established religion. Early liberal movements opposed absolute monarchy and various kinds of religious orthodoxy while endorsing new concepts of individual rights under the rule of law - classical liberalism.
Classical liberalism – emphasizes the belief that laissez faire capitalism based on little to no governmental interference in the economy will promote individual liberty. First articulated by John Locke (1632-1704) who described two fundamental ideas behind the idea of individual liberty:
economic liberty – the right to own and use property; and
intellectual liberty – the right to intellectual freedom of thought and conscience.
Social liberalism - emphasizes the belief that because unregulated laissez faire capitalism and the profit motive can cause inequality of wealth, a stronger central government is necessary to protect individual liberty from the perceived excesses of capitalism.
John Maynard Keynes was one of the strongest proponents of social liberals.
By the end of the 19th century, some liberals asserted that in order to be free, individuals needed access to food, shelter, and education and they also needed governmental protection against exploitation.
Then, during the Great Depression, the public's faith in laissez faire capitalism declined and many began to believe that unregulated markets could neither produce prosperity nor prevent poverty -
Conservative - Derived from Middle English term conserven, meaning to save, guard, preserve.
Adjective = marked by moderation or caution.
Noun = a person with moderate or cautious views, especially in politics or religion.
Classical conservatism - emphasizes the belief that the proper purpose of government is to allow men to follow their chosen pursuits with maximum freedom. As Thomas Jefferson said in his first Inaugural Address, "A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government."
Russell Kirk in "The Essence of Conservation" wrote in 1957:
"A conservative is not, by definition, a selfish or a stupid person; instead, he is a person who believes there is something in our life worth saving. Conservatism, indeed, is a word with an old and honorable meaning - but a meaning almost forgotten by Americans until recent years ... Conservatism, then, is not simply the concern of the people who have much property and influence; it is not simply the defense of privilege and status. Most conservatives are neither rich nor powerful. But they do, even the most humble of them, derive great benefits from our established Republic ... Conservatism is not simply a defense of capitalism... But the true conservative does stoutly defend private property and a free economy, both for their own sake and because these are means to great ends. Those great ends ... involve human dignity, human personality, human happiness. They involve even the relationship between God and man."

Re: Roe v Wade is coming down.
Sorry, dwise1. I thought you were replying to me and not Moose.

Moving Topic From Racism Thread.

I apologize for any irrationality I may have. My question to all of you is this: Do you see Republicans by and large as more racist than normal?
Percy writes:
Seriously? Is your head buried in the sand? How would you make a case that they're not.
Are we talking ALL of them? Are ALL Democrats pro-immigration? Are ALL Democrats Secular-Humanists? Let's steer clear of the ALL game.
Percy writes:
Doug Mastriano, Republican nominee for governor in Pennsylvania, donated to Gab, an antisemitic website used by the murderer of 11 Jewish congregates at a Pittsburgh synagogue, and linked to it from his own websites before deleting them this summer. He's called separation of church and state a "myth", and of course, what he actually means is that separation of Christianity and the US government is a myth.

Republicans across the country are neutralizing the black vote through gerrymandering.

Republicans are hostile toward Black Lives Matter.

Republican Russell Walker, running for the statehouse in North Carolina, has a personal website that states "the Jews are NOT Semitic they are satanic as they all descend from Satan."

Arthur Jones, running for Illinois representative, is a member of the American Nazi Party.

Corey Stewart, running in Virginia, is pro-Confederacy.

Paul Nehlen, running in Wisconsin, has been thrown off both Twitter and even Gab for his white supremacist comments.

Georgia eliminated voter drop boxes in certain counties. Predominately black counties. Missouri decided not to deploy the 80 drop boxes it had already purchased. The Trump campaign sued to invalidate drop boxes in Pennsylvania after the 2020 election. Republicans questioned results from drop boxes in Michigan.
OK, you have some valid points.
Percy writes:
Republicans are anti-immigrant, many believing in Replacement Theory, that immigrants are coming to replace white Christians as the dominant group in America.
While it is a fact that other ethnic groups are increasing in population percentage, some of them will be Republican-leaning. They are traditional family and anti LGBTQ and anti Abortion. [/qs] If there is a fear of "white" Christians getting displaced it is our own damn fault for being so insecure.
Percy writes:
Conservatism refers to being conservative about change. Conservatives believe change should be considered very carefully. They think the safest approach is usually just to keep things the way they already are.
Things will never stay the same. Re-electing Trump won't help anything.
Percy writes:
Independents already realize that sometimes the best approach is to conservatively maintain the status quo, but that sometimes one must be more open, liberal one might even say, in considering solutions. Keeping America as White and Christian as possible is definitely a conservative Republican position.
candle2 writes:
Phat, what exactly is it that you didn't like about Trump?
For one, I didn't trust what he said.

For another, he tweeted too darn much and kept firing good staff people like General Matthias. I was wary that he cozied up to Kim Jong Un and Putin. Art of the deal my arse!

Finally, lots of simple-minded people took entirely too much interest in him.

I don't know for a fact he was racist, but he was certainly sexist.

Now you tell me...

Apart from a mammoth tax cut for the rich, what did he even do besides run his mouth and fire people?
