Re: [Re: We're Giving Up Too Soon
It may not be true that getting spit in the face by an alpaca can reduce the effects of Covid-19 infections or that there is currently a study looking for 10,000 volunteers to test the effectiveness. The volunteers will be split into to two groups, one group will be exposed to a gob of just plain two hump camel spit while the other group receives genuine alpaca expectorate. Each group will receive two samples a day, one morning before eating and the other right before dinner. After 90 days and 180 days the findings will be compared and published.

Re: Alpaca spit
LOL!
I actually have met some alpacas out here in north central Massachusetts at The Red Apple Farm in Phillipston and they got mention in my song about the Farm:
you can take a gander at some goats, you can surely see some sheep
you can sneak a peek at Popple's alpacas - but they never pack a peep
you can move your shoes to live music, you can even go on a hayride
an' there's all kinds of other things that you can do in or outside

Graph of Contagiousness vs. Antibody Effective for the Variants
Here's a graph that appeared in today's Post at We Study Virus Evolution. Here’s Where We Think the Coronavirus Is Going.:

Re: Graph of Contagiousness vs. Antibody Effective for the Variants
It's worth putting the graph in the context of the article's concluding two paragraphs:
Taking all this together, we expect SARS-CoV-2 will continue to cause new epidemics, but they will increasingly be driven by the ability to skirt around the immune system. In this sense, the future may look something like the seasonal flu, where new variants cause waves of cases each year. If this happens, which we expect it will, vaccines may need to be updated regularly similar to the flu vaccines unless we develop broader variant-proof vaccines.
And of course, how much all this matters for public health depends on how sick the virus makes us. That is the hardest prediction to make, because evolution selects for viruses that spread well, and whether that makes disease severity go up or down is mostly a matter of luck. But we do know that immunity reduces disease severity even when it doesn’t fully block infections and spread, and immunity gained from vaccination and prior infections has helped blunt the impact of the Omicron wave in many countries. Updated or improved vaccines and other measures that slow transmission remain our best strategies for handling an uncertain evolutionary future.
Covid is here to stay, like the flu and loads of other diseases. The good news is that it's fatality is rapidly decreasing, such that its fatality is now less than the flu (albeit it's a lot more contagious). The following graph is from the Financial Times :

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Lethality dependent on location
Living in a red state is harmful to your health. Covid is one of the many ways.
Post-vaccine, death rates in red states were 38% higher than in blue states.

Re: Lethality dependent on location
Very interesting. Does anyone know why the death rate in NY is so high?

Re: Lethality dependent on location
It's a death rate per capita of population, rather than per person who got infected, so I'd guess that one contributing factor was a high rate of transmission of the virus, due to very large numbers of people being in close proximity in the city of New York (subway trains etc). (I'm going on very vague recollection here, but I understand New York is a pretty densely populated city ??)

Thank you for your answer. Really, it was an honest question. No need to be sarcastic. I'm vaccinated to the max.

Re: Going 4 for 4 on the 4th.
My wife just got her fourth shot today. I was thinking of holding off a bit as some experts were saying it might be better to wait as we are currently in a bit of a lull with this virus. Waiting a little could ensure a bit more immunity went the virus ramps up again.

Re: Lethality dependent on location
I don't think vimesey was being sarcastic.
New York City is the most densely populated area of the country, but though its death rate is high (1 in 208) it doesn't have the highest the country, not even close. Juniata County in rural Pennsylvania has a death rate of 1 in 142. Harlan County, Kentucky, is 1 in 131. Van Buren County, Tennessee is 1 in 125. Twiggs County, Georgia is 1 in 118. Upson County, Georgia is 1 in 114. Franklin Parish, Louisiana, is 1 in 113. McMullen County, Texas, is 1 in 83.
The high death rates tend to be in rural counties of red states, so the high death rate in ultra-urban and ultra-liberal New York City needs an explanation. I can understand a higher case rate because of the high population density, but not a higher death rate. Not only is New York City highly vaccinated, it also has excellent hospitals that can be reached very quickly compared to urban counties where a decent hospital might be a hundred miles away.
Looking this up, the high death rate seems to be because of the huge number of deaths early in the pandemic before vaccines became available.

That seems most likely to me too. Plus there were huge shortages of ventilators and other key medical supplies. And there was hardly any experience at treating Covid.

And in NYC during the early days there were simply no beds, no doctors, no treatments, no protective gear ... just about every imaginable shortage. They were sending patients out of town because they quite simply ran out of beds, space, doctors, nurses ...

And NYC was at the center of the 1st really big outbreak in the US. Remember Cuomo on TV every day begging for ventilators? I can remember thinking it was going to be like that where I live and being SO FUCKING ANGRY AT TRUMP!
