Well, I guess the subtlety went over my head. Maybe partly because of the last thread we were involved in.

Very interesting discussions going on but this is the wrong thread.
Can you continue on the customary threads, please?
I would like to see this continued.

In fact there wasn’t a lot of subtlety. If you can write obvious falsehoods without violating your integrity, so can the Gospel authors and the Church fathers. See Message 28 for a takedown of three of your claims - two obviously false and one obviously irrational.
Unfortunately that is what you are really complaining about.
The onus is on you to make better arguments, not to demand that we pretend that your arguments are good, or to paint yourself as the victim if we don’t. Your arguments are your responsibility. We don’t have to dishonestly cover up your failures.

this site is deader than a doornail. it's not one issue, it's many.
it's basically become a joe biden fillibuster
sad to see a place that was at one point dynamic for social media standards descend into complete anachronism.
i wouldn't honestly care at all, but i have nowhere else to get my social media fix right now.
i would make suggestions to encourage board participation, but they would fall on deaf ears. this place is apparently hellbent on falling into anachronistic, digital dust.
anyway, continue falling on your sword, EvC. you're still more relevant than reddit i suppose, despite the huge traffic disparity.
that's not exactly a compliment.
you have a nicer cesspool.
i guess at some point percy will become bored with paying bandwidth?
as trump would say,
Sad.

You might consider answering some of your own unanswered posts. Posting your opinions and then ignoring the responses is not exactly an examplary form of participation.

Rating algorhythm
Percy, I have a problem with your rating algorhythm. For many weeks I have been around 5.3 or so. That's fine. But then I posted the Lani Guinier obit and got 1 cheer, but for some reason my rating shot up to 7.8!!!
Seems a tad flukey. Maybe a bug you can look into?
I think I should still be around 5.3 or 5.4.
Since you keep a lifetime record of how many posts each EvC member has made, I would just divide lifetime likes by lifetime posts, and then maybe have a Last 100 posts Likes? And if there was a way to screen out certain posts that automatically get lots of likes, like birthdays of kids and similar kinds of posts.....

Re: Rating algorhythm
Keep the cheers. That allows us to quick/easy show appreciation, say thank you, support the view and/or laugh at a really good joke.
The rating is mindless emotional fluff with no actual meaning in the forum. What does it mean when a rating, however it is calculated, moves from 5.4 to 5.3? From 5.6 to 4.4? Not squat.
Percy could delete the member rating and replace that line in the display with a random number generator for all the effect it has on our proceedings.

Eschew obfuscation. Habituate elucidation.

Re: Rating algorhythm
Thanks for the feedback. I have tried several times, though not recently, to improve the way ratings are calculated. If you hover over your rating you'll see this text:
Member ratings are on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest). They are a measure of a member's ability to draw votes for their messages over the past 90 days.
What I've found is that sudden changes in scores are often due to your own and other people's highly rated messages passing over the 90 day horizon.
My efforts at improving the algorithm proved to me that a) It's more complicated than I thought; and b) I'm no good at it. Anyone who's better at this kind of thing than me is welcome to pass me some algorithmic advice. Nwr's advice some years ago proved helpful - I backed off on the complexity to something more simplistic, and it seemed to help deliver more rational ratings.
Crashfrog complained about the ratings some years ago, and as a joke I wrote some code that displayed my Percy rating as 11 on pages displayed under Crashfrog's account, but he never noticed and I removed the code years ago.

Moving Average
To avoid the sudden jump a very simple number is the "moving average".
In this case you'd take the current day's vote for the person. Take 1/90 of that and add it to 89/90 of the previous day's score. That will have been calculated using the same equation. This 'fades' an old number over a 90 day period.

Re: Moving Average
I would change it from a 90-DAY window to a 90-LastPOSTs window, so old geezers who are silent for 90 days don't just disappear.

Re: Moving Average
Also it would be neat to see the All-Time leaders in total posts, say the Top20. And who got the Top20 Cheers (or, as I was calling them, Likes).

Ramoss, out current "10"
Research finds that Ramoss has posted 9 messages in the last 90 day.
Ramoss collected a total 15 cheers in 5 message (4 had no cheers).
That is 15/9 = 1.66... cheers/message.
That apparently gets normalized to be "10", and everyone else is relative to that "10".
