Omaha only allows 6 (and with a permit).
(Lincoln allows 15, which is rare example of relative enlightenment)
I think it is evil myself.
(West Virginia seems to have cities that are the most tolerant of large numbers of cats in the house, provided they aren't let outside). (Beckley seems to allow an unlimited amount INSIDE without a permit application. Charleston allows an un ssf specified amount inside with an a permit plea)
Breeders can have all they want, naturally. The breeders are forced to dispose of the surplus cats once they get past a profitable age ( varies but is usually 6 months), which they are only too happy to do, regardless of the law.
But my question does not center on the despicable breeders, but on those who try to care for the cats to save them from near certain death. ( Nebraska gives the Humane Society police powers. They get a tip from a snitch that a home owner has "too many" cats, then they get a warrant , then they break into a home. ) Should the cat Gestapo, regardless of what organization or government organ takes the form, be a part of reality we all face?
In Omaha the Gestapo is actually initialed as NHS, which reminded me of the genuinely humane health care systems overseas. Some are initialed NHS, like in the U.K, I believe. Here it is an initial for the Omaha Inhumane Society.

jar is obviously not a cat lover as is Moose. His impolite reference to yawning is an ego attachment disorder.
Personally, I think that cat populations should be limited by the governing officials in urban areas in the interest of public safety but only in numbers exceeding ten. As for those who own (or care for) less than 10, they should be required to have the cats medically fit and safe having had necessary shots and kept in a clean quartered environment. Apart from that, there should be no rules. The bottom line is the safety of the other pets and people in the immediate vicinity. What other concerns are important?

LNA goes through times where he simply wants conversation
Obviously, Moose promoted the topic, and that in and of itself validates its existence and refutes any notions of "silliness" or irrelevance.
Were it left up to you as an administrator we would have lots of topics of gun collections, pens, and Baltimore memories.

I will readily admit that I can be a train wreck at times.
Remember Jon? He once suggested that I am the only EvC Member preoccupied and even obsessed with topics about myself.
Lamark, by contrast, is simply bored and wants some conversation.
You could at least comment to him something positive about his topic or say nothing at all. Your "yawn" shows that you think of yourself better than he about relevant topics. What if he yawned at your pen collection?

Re: LNA goes through times where he simply wants conversation
When I post about my pen collection he is certainly free to yawn.
The topic is not about cats or dogs but rather about the limits of what a political body might apply.
Surprisingly as anyone who has any knowledge of US politics should know, there is a mechanism that is designed to address just that question. In the case of cities and towns there are multiple mechanism including but not limited to voting, speaking at public hearings, letters to the editor, peaceful protests as well as intentional disregard of the law as an open protest.
What I think about what some other political entity does or does not do that does not entail endanger humans or human rights is quite honestly irrelevant.

Huh? Who else but jar would propose such topics? And it would be unethical to promote a topic that he himself had proposed.

What is missing in this discussion is the unavoidable fact that cats, especially the tender young kittens, taste real good in a white wine sauce.

No Cat Laws Here
Any such rules on the number of cats one may be associated with (I hesitate using the word owned in regard to cats), would be laughed at into eternity. There are several reasons for this situation that have to do with the local environment.
1) Such a rule would be ignored, this is the real wild west. Laws are treated as suggestions.
2) There are 10X as many feral cats as pets. If you want a cat put out a bowl of food:
24 hours = 1-2 cats
48 hours = 4-6 cats
72 hours = around a dozen cats and a few opossums and raccoons
3) The animal shelter has a no-kill policy.
4) Lack of Great Horned Owls relative to other places.
If you want to have too many cats here, it's no problem except for you.

If you don't know what you're doing, find someone who does, and do what they do.

First of all, the topic got an automatic promotion because 1) It's a topic that could have been started directly in the "Coffee House", and 2) We've been in short supply of new topics, dubious or otherwise.
I think the number of cat limits are because the number of cats in a household can easily get out of hand (aka "the crazy cat lady"). There's a good chance that the cats will be poorly cared for, and the house could well become a disgusting mess.
Personally, I'm down to 2 cats, from a high of 5 cats. I lost Teddy to kidney failure this past April (age 16). He blessed me by going from "pretty good" to dying on his own in his final 36 hours. This past Friday I had cat Squeak euthanized (also age 16) after a long struggle of getting the cat to eat enough to not starve. Also kidney failure.
As one of my veterinarians said, "If it weren't for the kidneys, they'd live forever".
I've had 9 cats in my life. 3 died fairly young from various causes, but not kidney failure. The most recent 4 have lived to at least about 15, and all had kidney failure. So, I'm down to "the fluff sisters", each 13 years old. One is a controlled diabetic and the other has no known health issues.

Yeah, if nothing else gets them it's always the kidneys. I lost my previous cat at age 19 1/2 almost four years ago from kidney failure. She just stopped eating and so we had to put her down.

I'm off cats for a while. My last cat made it to 23 and was in surprisingly good health until the last 4-5 months. She was an indoor outdoor cat and the best mouser I've ever had. I got her from my daughter when she was tiny, the only Siamese in a litter with 9 black siblings . Always slept on my bed and my wife says she pined for me when i was on a trip.
I sure miss her, but I've decided not to get anymore cats until I stop travelling.
