Well, well, well..
Fractured rocks of impact craters may be suitable hosts for deep microbial communities on Earth and potentially other terrestrial planets, yet direct evidence has remained elusive. Now, a team of researchers from the Linnaeus University and elsewhere has found evidence for ancient microbial life in rock samples from the Siljan impact crater in Sweden. Is it too much to ask to get a proposed topic promoted these days?

Sorry I just now saw this. I hope I put the topic in an appropriate forum.

No - they’re talking about Earthly microbes moving into meteor impact sites. The thread title should be Microbes found in Meteor Craters.
At Siljan we see that the crater is colonized but that it has mainly occurred when conditions, such as temperature, became more favorable than at the impact event, Dr. Drake said.

I’ve skimmed the paper at ResearchGate
They are quite definitely talking about colonisation of the impact site by deep-living terrestrial microbes - about 300 million years after the impact. So, no. There is no suggestion that the microbes came from anywhere but deep in the Earth, and they even suggest that their methods can be used to avoid the mistake of thinking that the microbes arrived with the meteor.

On a somewhat related topic, I read that because of global warming the arctic permafrost is melting and potentially releasing lots of previously frozen virus, bacteria, and ancient goop that could infect living things again. Is this in any way true?

The permafrost is definitely melting. It will definitely contain. microbes. It could contain microbes capable of infecting humans. But I don’t think anyone died from infections caught from the frozen mammoths that have been dug out of there.
I can’t rule out the possibility of there being something nasty out there, but it doesn’t seem a huge risk.

I can't imagine that microbes from thawing arctic permafrost would pose any more risk to humans than microbes from the Congo or anywhere else. It reminds me of a line from "The Jerk"; "enough of these old wines, bring me some NEW wines". Enough of those old viruses and microbes; bring me some NEW viruses and microbes. Any microbes or viruses from thawing permafrost will be viruses and microbes that it's likely humans have experienced before and so may have some immunity to any ill effects. But now them NEW viruses and microbes might be a whole different story.

Ahhh yes. Global warming. The Science based Leftist counterpart to the Right Wing CCoI Antichrist, False Prophets, Spiritual War, Armageddon scenario. And you guys have science on your side! I still predict that the supernatural (AKA The Unexplained) will become evident in the next few years. Of course you will pass it off as a delusion and fantasy just as many right wingnuts pass off global warming as a fantasy. The difference is that you have science on your side while all we have is subjective shared experience.
This is why I drive down the middle of the road and try not to be too extreme either way. AddByEdit: But for the record, I do believe that global warming is real. Edited by Phat, : No reason given.
