I wanted to start a fresh thread on our new President which focuses more on what he is doing and saying and the big job that he has ahead of him in 2021 and beyond.
quote:
Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. is an American politician and president-elect of the United States. Having defeated incumbent Donald Trump in the 2020 United States presidential election, he will be inaugurated as the 46th president in January 2021.
In this thread I want to NOT focus on Trump. As Percy said, the witch is dead. He may throw a few more fits, but unless he starts a war or pulls some other shit, his day is done come January. Anyone who wants to talk about him please take it to the Trump Presidency thread started by Percy, where we have 4375 messages of empty tweets, broken campaign promises, and utter bullshit from what will likely go down in history as one of the worst presidencies of modern times. Sleepy Joe is waking up and has a lot of work to do, so lets focus on him and news about him and his transition team in this topic. Im sick of Trump.
So to start this thing off, I think that our new president has a lot of work to do, and I worry that there will be an inevitable post 2020 recession/depression as the Bill becomes due from the necessary corrections and policies enacted during COVID 19. Of course the Republicans have another two months to begin blaming the Democrats for the changes, but keep in mind that these changes were initiated by the policies of the previous administration as well as COVID 19.
Feel free to contribute. We have a lot of brainpower here at EvC and now that most of our trolls are suspended indefinitely, my hope is that this topic can remain positive and focused as we transition into a New Year, New Hope, and as we deal with the damage and the messes of our past.

At the last election you ran I at least knew that if you elected Trump you guys would build a wall and that the Mexicans would pay for it.
This time around I can't say I heard anything on policy, Biden won by not being Trump. So can't help much, soz.

So Whats On Joes Plate?
What are some of the issues that you feel need to be addressed besides COVID 19?
I am so glad that we are more united again as a nation. I c ould feel the change at work All of my customers were giddy and optimistic apart from a temper tantrum thrown by one guy at self checkout who was yelling and shouting as if he was filled with sheer hate about life and about himself.

Focus: Bridges Not Walls
I think that the so called Wall will become a non-issue. Of course we still have to monitor our borders and from what I have heard, human trafficking has decreased dramatically since even parts of the border were better enforced. That all being said, we need the Mexicans. They are part of our future.
Lets just try and get the ones who need to work and wish to become legal, either through citizenship or by green cards and workers permits. We dont need an open stream of humanity flowing into the US due to a broken world. Hopefully, President Elect Biden will allow a consensus of opinion within his government which will help shape this policy.

. True Dat. I think it will be so refreshing to again have a rational man as president who has no ego and does not dominate the news through his own personal opinions but allows a freely flowing exchange of ideas without firing everyone.

The Covid crisis
It’s too early to say what Biden will do on this front, since we don’t know what disastrous legacy Trump will leave him. We do know that Biden will listen to scientific advice, and will be happy to sign further stimulus bills.
But the infection is spreading. Unless efforts are made to control it, the situation will get worse. The costs of the disease and of longer and more severe lockdowns to get it under control will mount.
I think that the problems will make themselves more obvious before January 20. Too early to blame Biden.

True, but stimulus checks are band-aids at best. We still have a helluva bill to pay and it may well turn out that Mr. Trump allowed the bill to increase far worse than Obama ever did. Of course COVID 19 can be blamed but the National Debt may end up being a major problem once our taxes wont even pay the interest.
Shall we reverse the Corporate Tax cuts or will that trash our industrial base even further? One thing I do agree on that the conservatives champion is the idea that you cannot tax your way to an economic recovery.

Re: The Covid crisis
Stimulus cheques - and the other parts of the spending - are more like a crutch. They keep you and the economy propped up until you can stand on your own.
Yes, government debt will go up, and there may well be tax increases and spending cuts in the future to try to reduce it. But that would apply with any sane government. Margaret Thatcher would have had a fit at the Republican Party of today (and not just the way they are running up the debt).
Heavy industries are in trouble anyway, but there are the tech industries and financial businesses that can be tapped. (But this is where we get to Thatcher again - she wasn’t a fan of trying to keep uncompetitive industries going). Not to mention wealthy tax evaders and avoiders. I’ve seen a suggestion of an extra tax on executives who are paid out of proportion to the rest of their company’s workforce, but I think that was a State initiative.

No Reparations,Joe. And watch out for Kamala.

Survival sounds like a bare minimum strategy. America2wants to remain in its position as a leader and not simply a bit player like Britain or France. We don't want China to run the world nor do we like their idea of Capitalism It is ruthless and favors the evolved fittest. It is every man for himself.
OK so maybe Trump lied to his base. Maybe he made them promises that he had no intention of fulfilling. I seriously doubt whether the small businessmen got much of a tax break. I know that Safeway didnt pass anything on down to us, and if it was not for COVID 19 we would be shutting down more stores and squeezing out the union. And yet they let $2700.00 a day in shoplifting walk right out the door.
I'm glad that the Democrats won the election, and hope that my union becomes stronger and that the workers in society get a break rather than being scared of offending the thieves. Its this whole attitude of reparations and paying off the cultures whom our great granddads exploited. You and I talked about the Native Americans before. And hey...I am all for equal rights, but I'm not paying off any bills for ancient broken treaties or disenfranchised black people.
They need to get over their feelings and get to work like the rest of us. We all are in this together. And the union is the fairest way. Seniority does not6 mean privilege or favoritism. It simply means that you get first pick over hours and scheduling and that you earn a wage coinciding with your years of experience rather than a special favor since you got left behind at school.[/rant]

Reality is based in part on votes. and you can bet your bottom dollar that a majority of Americans are not in favor of reparations. Reality suggests that I am not liable for anything in the distant past.

On the other hand, the first thing President Elect Biden is doing is getting together a Covid 19 task force. That is even before his cabinit picks.

Yet reality still trumps what folk want and reality suggests that yes, we are responsible for the damage that is STILL being done today.
But reparations can take many forms and there is no indication that reparations would cause you anything more than your normal panties in a wad because you are clueless about anything you fear.

To go to the Trump presidency topic or to the Biden presidency topic, that is the question?
A Republican senator says Biden should receive daily briefings, and he will ‘step in’ to ensure that occurs. - The New York Times
quote:
Senator James Lankford, an Oklahoma Republican who sits on a key Senate oversight committee, said on a podcast released on Wednesday that he had no objections to President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. receiving presidential daily briefings, and that he would take action himself if that did not begin by the end of the week.
More at source.
In the big picture of Republican obstructionism, this is downright amazing - From an Oklahoma senator no less!

The Corruption Continues
Canadian politics are exactly the same as American politics in the general sense.
That is - whoever is in power does "some stuff" to appease those who voted them in... but all politicians (anyone at or near the Presidency or Prime Minister position) have been fairly corrupt for the last few decades.
Republican or Democrat.
Conservative or Liberal.
Trump or Biden or Obama.
Harper or Trudeau.
I don't see much of a difference in the overall "rich get richer" and "poor get poorer" scheme.
They all have their plans, and their scams and places to take our money and make it their money.
There's only one way to stop it.
When the corruption is uncovered - put the politician in jail.
Not necessarily forever, but at least a few years - and, of course, the length should differ on severity of "stealing from the country."
Every single one of the listed politicians above (and likely a lot more) deserve to go to jail at least for a few years for their white-collar crimes in dealing with the country's finances.
Without that... it doesn't matter who's in office.
Without that... Trump will not be the 'worst President' - that is still to come.
Without that... the corruption will continue.
Do that... put the corrupt politicians in jail... and the corruption disappears. Or, at least, becomes as minimal as possible.
I don't care about going into the past.
Although it would be cathartic... it doesn't really matter as long as it starts now or soon.
Visibility and accountability.
It's the only thing that will ever get either country moving towards "government for the people" again.
