Epson has updated the firmware on their printers to only work with Epson brand cartridges.

yea!
I didn't let them update for months so I saved a bunch with ink off amazon. Finally the printer stopped working.
I let it update the firmware and it didn't fix the problem but the ink got refected. That's why I will not use Epson again. Ever. Period.

Re: yea!
Yup. But I even read the firmware notes before doing the update and there was ZERO mention of that enhancement.

Epson has updated the firmware on their printers to only work with Epson brand cartridges.
I got notification a couple years ago from the manufacturer of my ink.
Whenever I turn my printer on I make sure my internet connection is off, so no updates can be even downloaded.
And I do not use Epson paper either.

There appears to be a class action suit against Epson about this.

And it didn't last long. It was dismissed almost immediately.
The proposed class action detailed on this page was dismissed without prejudice by Chief U.S. District Judge Larry Alan Burns on February 14, 2020.
That was an earlier attempt.
The current lawsuit shows as pending.
