Lets Discuss This Book
Dr.John Lennox is admittedly an apologist and a Christian. He is, however, also Well Credentialed---certainly above the educational and practical level of most of the peanut gallery at our dear Forum. (I can see Tangle squirming with discomfort in the corner! )
Of course, this in and of itself is unimpressive nor persuasive to many of you here---thus lets examine the CONTENT of (this) Lennox book rather than simply crow on about him as the SOURCE shall we?
I was curious about this title and thus thought it well worth a read.
Here is the Table Of Contents:
quote:
Introduction: Cosmic Chemistry
1. Can you be a scientist and believe in God?
2. How did we get here: from Newton to Hawking
3. Mythbusters I: Science
4. Mythbusters II: Christian faith
5. Can we really take the Bible seriously any more?
6. Miracles: a step too far?
7. Can you trust what you read?
8. How to disprove Christianity
9. The personal dimension
10. Entering the laboratory: testing the truth
wiki writes:
Lennox has been part of numerous public debates defending the Christian faith, including debates with Christopher Hitchens, Michael Shermer, Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss, Peter Atkins, Victor Stenger, Michael Tooley, Stephen Law, and Peter Singer.
On 3 October 2007, Lennox debated Richard Dawkins at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama on Dawkins's views expressed in his book, The God Delusion.[11][12][13] The debate was broadcast to millions worldwide and was described by the Wall Street Journal as "a revelation: in Alabama, a civil debate over God's existence".
Lennox and Dawkins had a discussion in April 2008 at Trinity College, Oxford to expand upon topics left undeveloped during The God Delusion Debate.[14][15]
On 9 August 2008, Lennox debated Christopher Hitchens at the Edinburgh International Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, on the question of whether or not Europe should jettison its religious past and welcome the "New Atheism."[16][17]
On 23 August 2008, Lennox debated Michael Shermer at the Wesley Conference Centre in Sydney, Australia on the existence of God.[18][19]
On 21 October 2008, Lennox again debated Dawkins at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, the site of the 1860 Oxford evolution debate between Thomas Henry Huxley and Samuel Wilberforce. The debate was titled "Has Science Buried God?".[20][21] The Spectator called the event "Huxley-Wilberforce, Round Two."[22]
On 3 March 2009, Lennox debated Hitchens for the second time at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, on the question "Is God Great?" The debate addressed the validity of some of Hitchens' claims in his book God is Not Great.[23][24][25]
On 20 July 2011, Lennox debated Peter Singer at the Melbourne Town Hall in Melbourne, Australia on the topic "Is There a God?"[26][27][28]
I don't really know or care to know his won/loss record regarding his debates with these worthy opponents, but I will defend his calling and seek to discuss this one book in particular as I read it Chapter by Chapter. Stay tuned.

We must realize that the Reformation world view leads in the direction of government freedom. But the humanist world view with inevitable certainty leads in the direction of statism. This is so because humanists, having no god, must put something at the center, and it is inevitably society, government, or the state.- Francis A. Schaeffer
The whole war between the atheist and the theist comes down to this: the atheist believes a 'what' created the universe; the theist believes a 'who' created the universe.

Re: Lets Discuss This Book
Actually, this book...though it looked interesting to me, was too much in favor of the world view which I chose and choose to defend.
Before continuing this discussion, (which I will do in due time) I wanted to discuss another book which I am actively reading. It too is mentioned here in our friendly Book Nook. 3 Theories Of Everything. Stay tuned, loyal peanut gallery!
