Anyway we've got this big hubbub about Covid-19 now. Gosh, could it be because it's an opportunity to bash Trump even though he's doing a great job of dealing with it?
You need to step back and gain some perspective.
quote:
As Italy battles Europe's worst outbreak, and with the virus spreading fast, doctors are making comparisons to war-time triage medics deciding who lives, who dies and who gets access to the limited number of intensive unit beds.
Dr Macchini spoke candidly of the enormous pressure facing frontline staff in his country - which has reported a total of 463 virus-related deaths and more than 9,000 confirmed cases in just over two weeks. . . .
Another doctor from Bergamo, anaesthesiologist Christian Salaroli, told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that doctors are now forced to choose who to treat on the basis of the patients' chances of survival.
"We can't attempt miracles. It's the reality," he said.
The Italian society of anaesthesiology and intensive care published 15 ethical recommendations to consider when deciding on ICU admissions during the virus crisis and the ICU shortage. The criteria include the age of the patient and the probability of survival, and not just "first come first served".

If we do nothing, this is what is going to happen in the US. Our health care system will be overwhelmed with critical patients, and the death rate will increase around 5 fold due to the simple fact that people can't be treated fast enough. When was the last time you heard of a flu season like that?

But here we've got, what, 40 deaths, FORTY, and the whole nation is shut down. Less than two thousand infected?
It doesn't do much good to close the barn door after the cows have gotten out. I suppose that you think safe sex is putting a condom on after the act?
Don't get me wrong. I'm glad to see protections being put in place, especially since I'm in the most vulnerable age group, but there is such a thing as overkill, and I'm holed up in my apartment anyway.
How would you stop person to person spread of the virus?

Seriously though how accurate is the estimated mortality rate given that we don't really know how many people have been infected?
South Korea has had much higher levels of testing which allows for much better estimates. They are seeing about a 0.8% mortality rate.
How Coronavirus Death Rate in South Korea Compares to Flu
From what I can see, this is the best estimate we have right now. We probably won't know the actual mortality rate until it's over and epidemiologists have done some extensive surveys.
