Re: The Final Results
PS - my son just introduced me to some of Tim Minchin's stuff - Xmas holiday viewing sorted ! :-)

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Re: Jonathan Pie - Election Aftermath
Gosh, Jonathan Pie gets it. Our Leftists still don't get it. And anyone who thinks Trump is stupid doesn't get it either.

Re: Jonathan Pie - Election Aftermath
I've watched all the Jonathan Pie videos that have been posted here. It's only this one in which he gets it. He's clearly a Leftist, a raging Leftist so I'm surprised to find he can actually recognize where the Leftists went wrong in treating their opponents as idiots. Most Leftists aren't capable of that level of perspicacity.

MPs back Boris' plan to leave the EU in January
quote:
MPs have backed Prime Minister Boris Johnson's plan for the UK to leave the EU on 31 January.
They voted 358 to 234 - a majority of 124 - in favour of the EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill, which now goes on to further scrutiny in Parliament.
The bill would also ban an extension of the transition period - during which the UK is out of the EU but follows many of its rules - past 2020.
The PM said the country was now "one step closer to getting Brexit done".

No surprise considering the Conservative majority.

European Parliament backs terms of UK exit
quote:
Members of the European Parliament have overwhelmingly backed the terms of the UK's departure from the EU.
MEPs ratified the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement by 621 votes to 49 following an emotional debate in Brussels.
After the vote, MEPs marked the UK's exit by singing Auld Lang Syne.
Several British MEPs said they hoped the UK would return one day although Eurosceptics, including the Brexit Party's Nigel Farage, used their final speeches to tear into the EU.
The UK is due to leave the bloc at 23:00 GMT on Friday.
Brexit: European Parliament overwhelmingly backs terms of UK's exit - BBC News
Appears the stage is now set and the UK will officially leave the EU on Friday, January 31st. It's been quite the ride to get here and there are still details of trade agreements that need to be made. But the exit is now certain. Will be interesting to see how this affects both the UK and EU in the coming years.

The UK is screwed. Best thing Scotland can do is leave the UK and join EU.
I venture to guess the UK is going to be Kansas on steroids.

No, because most of Scotland's business is with England. That would be silly.
I venture to guess the UK is going to be Kansas on steroids.
Because it differs from Kansas by having a GDP and a population an order of magnitude higher, and a totally different regulatory structure, economic base and political situation?
So not so much, 'Kansas on steroids' as 'nothing at all like Kansas'.

Scotland and the UK
Scotland was on the verge of leaving not too long ago. The UK economy is going to take a major hit. Do you not think that part of the reason for Brexit is protectionism? Protectionism is going hurt the UK drastically. There is very little upside and a whole lot of downside to Brexit. It is a the UK version of russian influenced trumpism. Scotland has the ability to leave the UK. The short term difficulties with this may be outweighed in the long term by breaking from the UK economy that is shortly going to be circling down the toilet.
Because it differs from Kansas by having a GDP and a population an order of magnitude higher, and a totally different regulatory structure, economic base and political situation?
Those are the reasons it is going to be Kansas on steroids. The majority of MP's and brits seem to have drunk the anti-regulatory, low tax, social programs be damned koolaid. Johnson made lot of promises about social programs and the NHS in order to attract the Labour vote. donnie dumpsterfire did a lot of the same to get elected here. We see how well that worked for that constituency.

Re: European Parliament backs terms of UK exit
Only three problems with that
1. It's probable that the Scots still don't want to leave the Uk
2. The Scots need the consent of Parliament to become independent. Boris has already formally refused on the basis that they voted against it in a referendum and this Parliament will never agree.
3. The Scottish economy is a joke - it has a deficit of over 10% - it's subsidised by England. The EU won't allow a new member unless its deficit is under 3%
quote:
This week, the Scottish government published figures for its national finances. They show that the Scottish government spends 127 for every 100 it raises in tax a ratio unequalled anywhere else in the developed world. It can do this because so much extra money is sent up from England. For every 100 spent per English head, 120 is spent on a Scottish one.
Greece, Italy, Albania no country, no matter how economically distressed, has such a mismatch between state spending and tax collected. Scotland’s deficit at 10.1 per cent of GDP is now twice as big as the next-worst country (Japan). No independent country could afford to run a deficit of Scottish magnitude: to borrow on world markets, you need a semblance of fiscal respectability. Even to join the European Union, Scotland’s deficit would need to be below 3 per cent. So an independent Scotland would right now be facing a choice: state spending down by 15 per cent, taxes up by 19 per cent, or a combination of the two.

Jonathan Pie - Brexit Day!
Regardless of the referendum result, I am grateful that Brexit introduced me to Jonathan Pie.

OK, now I am getting concerned.
Not only the covid stuff but now all this fish talk that has Scotland talking about leaving the UK to rejoin the EU? I've watched some of the comments on the net and, though I don't believe much eGossipTM, I get the sense a real fracture, created by brexit, is about to get nasty.
You guys all right over there?

It’s gonna be crap for a while.
We stand a chance of Scotland going their own way - and our economy is going to tank.
But hey, the racists, manipulated by a few billionaires who are going to make a fortune shorting sterling, will feel that we’ve got our country back.
All summed up by something I heard a supermarket checkout operator say to a customer, just before the vote: well, I don’t really understand any of the arguments, but I’m voting leave to keep the foreigners out.
