It's election day in the UK!
I believe polls close at 10 PM UK time. Exit polling should provide some insight after that. Conservatives still poll for a majority, although it is narrower than earlier polls. And the outcome will of course determine Brexit moving forward.
I think the worst scenario at this stage would be any kind of hung parliament. Since that will likely drag things out far longer. Then again, it could lead to the possibility of another referendum. Time will tell.

So how long before Britain abandons the family?
I think the more pertinent question is how long will Jeremy Corbyn last as leader of the Labour party.

The Final Results
Conservatives: 364 Seats
Labour: 203 Seats
SNP: 48 Seats
Lib Dems: 11
DUP: 8
Other: 15
Conservatives now have a comfortable majority to push their agenda.
I think this pretty much settles the near term. Brexit will happen in January and it will likely be Boris' deal. Subsequent to that, we shall see.
I think the one saving grace here is that I believe Boris will likely realize that the next few years are going to define his tenure as PM. As such, I am guessing he will likely work towards a more agreeable break from the EU and not push for a No Deal. Despite his bravado, I would think (hope) that he is pragmatic enough to realize that a No Deal would damage the economy and he would take blame for that.

Scottish referendum?
While Boris and the Conservatives ended up with a big majority, it can't be overlooked that the SNP also had a very good night. It looks like discussions are already occurring in Scotland regarding another potential referendum regarding Scotland leaving the UK.
Is that likely at this stage? I believe legally, that would need to be approved by parliament and I think Boris has already stated he would say no. Would the SNP potentially try and pull a Catalonia and just put forth a referendum without parliamentary approval?

Re: Scottish referendum?
I can't see Nicola Sturgeon going on the run like Carles Puigemont.
Might have been entertaining to see her in Braveheart paint.
Today, Boris Johnson is pushing forward with legistlation to make it illegal to extend the transition period, thus making a hard brexit or "crash out" more likely.
No surprise there. That was one of the first things I had assumed he would do if he got his majority.
The question now is if he will use that as leverage for additional discussions with the EU. Potentially asking for more concessions on his deal.

MPs back Boris' plan to leave the EU in January
quote:
MPs have backed Prime Minister Boris Johnson's plan for the UK to leave the EU on 31 January.
They voted 358 to 234 - a majority of 124 - in favour of the EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill, which now goes on to further scrutiny in Parliament.
The bill would also ban an extension of the transition period - during which the UK is out of the EU but follows many of its rules - past 2020.
The PM said the country was now "one step closer to getting Brexit done".

No surprise considering the Conservative majority.

European Parliament backs terms of UK exit
quote:
Members of the European Parliament have overwhelmingly backed the terms of the UK's departure from the EU.
MEPs ratified the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement by 621 votes to 49 following an emotional debate in Brussels.
After the vote, MEPs marked the UK's exit by singing Auld Lang Syne.
Several British MEPs said they hoped the UK would return one day although Eurosceptics, including the Brexit Party's Nigel Farage, used their final speeches to tear into the EU.
The UK is due to leave the bloc at 23:00 GMT on Friday.
Brexit: European Parliament overwhelmingly backs terms of UK's exit - BBC News
Appears the stage is now set and the UK will officially leave the EU on Friday, January 31st. It's been quite the ride to get here and there are still details of trade agreements that need to be made. But the exit is now certain. Will be interesting to see how this affects both the UK and EU in the coming years.

UK and EU have a deal
The EU and UK have reached a post-Brexit trade deal, ending months of disagreements over fishing rights and future business rules.
At a Downing Street press conference, Boris Johnson said: "We have taken back control of our laws and our destiny."
The prime minister added that although arguments had been "fierce" it was a "good deal for the whole of Europe", driving jobs and prosperity.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said it was a "fair and balanced" deal.

Don't know the details, but at least a deal is in place.

Re: UK and EU have a deal
Interestingly, I heard that one of the biggest stickler points was the fishing details. The UK was more resistant to EU boats fishing in or near their territorial waters. Looks like they were eventually able to get some kind of compromise.
And I honestly had no doubts the border with Ireland would stay open. There is so much at stake there, that both sides probably wanted to ensure that remained stable.
Incidentally, I started this Brexit thread in June of 2016. Hard to believe it is still alive in December of 2020. Guess the talking heads that continued to say Brexit would be easy were a tad off the mark.

Second Scottish Referendum?
Scottish National Party promise independence referendum after election win | CNN
quote:
The Scottish National Party is promising to hold a second independence referendum after election results announced Saturday saw pro-independence candidates gain a majority in the Scottish parliament.
The results from Thursday's vote have put the issue firmly back on the table and set the stage for a clash with London.
In her victory speech, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said her Scottish National Party (SNP) -- which wants to break away from the United Kingdom -- had delivered a "historic and extraordinary" win after finishing with 64 seats in the Scottish parliament, one short of a majority.
Combined with the eight seats won by Scottish Greens, pro-independence parties now control 72 of the parliament's 129 seats. The Conservative party won 31 seats, Labour won 22, and the Liberal Democrats four seats.
Well. Here we go again...

Re: The Final Results
Now that Boris is out, for the EVC folks in the UK, what are your thoughts on the new PM that was just announced? Liv Truss:
Liz Truss: What sort of prime minister will she be? - BBC News
quote:
What sort of prime minister will she be?
A heavy burden of responsibility falls immediately upon the shoulders of any new prime minister, often causing a silent quiver of nerves. For Liz Truss, self doubt does not form part of her lexicon.
People who have met her in recent days say she is relishing the ride and is brimming with self-confidence.
Don't know anything about this person, so curious as to other people's thoughts on the matter.

Liv Truss to Resign as PM
Wow. The UK is really going through Prime Ministers.

The recent scare for the UK economy was pretty alarming as well, with the pound going into freefall for a time. I am curious who will now step up to take the reigns.
