Change to URLs in Messages
I've just released new behavior for inserting URLs into messages. A bare URL entered like this into the message box:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2019/11/10/mercury-cross-front-sun-monday-last-time-until/
Used to be rendered like this:
But is now rendered like this using the actual title of the webpage as the link text:
The same is true when using the dBCode in this way:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2019/11/10/mercury-cross-front-sun-monday-last-time-until/
The other form of the dBCode where the user provides the explicit link text continues to behave as before. This:
Mercury to Pass in Front of the Sun
Would render like this in the displayed message:
There is one downside: Because fetching webpage titles takes more time, this feature will cause messages with URLs to take longer to preview and post. Please post reactions to this change to this thread.

Re: Change to URLs in Messages
Thank you for finding a bug. I've fixed Message 34. The Get Religion link won't title because they've blocked access from EvC Forum.

Re: Change to URLs in Messages
I have discovered that Amazon and Facebook detect when it is a website accessing them instead of a browser. Amazon returns "Robot Check" and Facebook returns "Update Your Browser | Facebook". I'm investigating whether there are any solutions. They both have APIs, but there would potentially be more APIs than I could keep up with, e.g., Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Yahoo, etc.

I don't think this is a necessary change.
I want to move the board in a positive direction and avoid moves in the wrong direction, but this doesn't give me much to go on. Can you be more specific?

If it slows the board loading, then it is undesirable, esp regarding mobile access on 4G or slower.
Just to be sure we're on the same page, it only slows two board functions: previewing a message, and posting a message. The slowdown isn't noticeable in most cases, but some websites are slow, so loading data from them (apparently the correct technical term is "scraping") like the title can take a few seconds.
Another nagging problem I seem to be having is that when I select a green arrow on the topic list it goes to mid message a couple posts away from mid listed - I have to search for the ID'd number.
Note, I use Firefox on windoze 10 machine.
I'm betting that this only occurs when viewing a page containing tweets. Would it be possible to verify whether that is the case? I'm aware of this problem and haven't figured out a way to fix it yet. The tweets load dynamically after the page has already been scrolled to the right place, causing the page to scroll further down. Hmmm, I wonder if I can lock scrolling while the tweets load.

Re: Change to URLs in Messages
I've put some time into this issue the last couple days and haven't found a solution yet. I'll be on vacation the next couple weeks and won't have any time for this until I get back.

Double Post Problem Fixed
The double post problem should now be fixed.
I fixed this problem once before a long while back, and the fix should have worked, but it did not. Double posts continued to happen.
So I have attempted a different solution. If you double post please post a note to this thread.

Re: Double Post Problem Fixed
Fixed typo in double post solution that probably made problem worse. Please post here if you experience a double post.
