Recovery is emotionally discouraging. I went to Jiffy Lube to have my oil changed. The price was too steep, to begin with, but I was pressured into buying all sorts of extra services and fancier oils, all of which I turned down. 3 days later, my car suddenly starts acting up. Today, I took it to a mechanic whom I trust. I paid ten times as much to get it fixed right. I suspect that those cons at the Jiffy Lube sabotaged my car somehow, but have no way of proving anything. I have new medications and have been sober from my binging and irrational and selfish behavior for 3 days. After one year of sobriety, I expected some sort of reward and received nothing. Then, I relapsed, expecting a quick reward which failed to materialize. Long story short, I was nearly broke and then my car acted up after trusting strangers to fix it cheaply. Today as I pay the mechanics whom I know $623.38, I at least trust that the money is well spent. How can I trust handing money out to people whom I never know their motives, intentions, or character?

What do you need to "trust" when you're helping the poor? You're not getting anything (material) in return so you can't be ripped off. What's it to you what their motives are?

Smile, god loves you :-)You don't get silly random rewards, you just get more life. The sooner you can stop looking for superstitiously granted rewards in this life and the next the sooner you're going to get some joy - and 'luck' - in your life.

Money often is NOT what is needed. Often the homeless person just needs someone to acknowledge they exist, a smile, a good morning, a Hi.The other day I was in my local Walgreen's and there was a mother and her maybe 8 or 9 year old daughter buying school supplies. They were at the serious decision stage as SHE had about a dozen different folder covers and was walking up and down the aisle try to decide which patterns or designs to choose. SHE also had a pony tail that reached almost to her knees and she swung it side to side as she walked.I commented that I wish I could fix my hair in a pony tail and her reply was "Even a first grader knows how to make a pony tail." Her mother said "Now that wasn't polite; apologize to the nice man" but I asked, "Instead, can SHE teach me how a first grader would make a pony tail."So I knelt down in the aisle and SHE grabbed my hair almost pulling it out of my head and started twisting it up into a rope."You have really skinny hair!""You're going bald you know!"Her mom is laughing and I'm near tears and SHE is totally in charge."Reach back and feel that! You need to twist it like that first, then put this over, then twist it and put it through again and then do this..."And I had my very first pony tail.Her mom was still laughing and asked if I was okay and mom told her daughter it wasn't nice to tell someone they were going bald to which SHE replied, "But mommy, he is!"So okay.Cost, got my knees dirty. Because in this case, the postman is bringing me a bill, rather than a cheque.And he only believes in duty, rather than in blessing.

It doesn't matter whether the messenger is bringing a cheque or a bill. You're responsible for your bills, aren't you? What do the messenger's beliefs have to do with you paying your bills?
