Just a quick survey of the American posters.
Would it be right for a company to make a stars and stripes doormat given the whole "the flag is a symbol of the country" business.
If not is it ok to do with other flags (for example the union flag (British)) if so why.
If not why the hell did I find British flag footmat when I went shopping yesterday.
Seems to me that if an American found a stars and stripes footmat in a shop in Britain they would be PISSED....

Seems to me that a stars and strips floor mat would be a pretty strong statement of freedom, ie, using the symbol of freedom in a statement of that very freedom.

Not disagreeing. I just think its interesting that in a country where so many people think that a flag (the stars and stripes) is so symbolic a footmat of another countrys (and a close ally at that) flag is being sold.
I wouldn`t have a problem if a stars and stripes version was sold side by side it is the fact that just the british flag was available that ticked me off.

Then take an optimistic view. Maybe the stars and stripes version had already sold out!

I generally agree with both of you, but by the rules such a thing would be a violation of flag etiquette. I imagine it would cause a great uproar, but similar mistreatment would not--like flying the damn thing at night without a light. jeesshhhh...if you are going to fly it, you could at least read the little piece of paper that goes with it.
A true story:
As Jennifer and I were heading out for a cave in Central Misery (AKA Missouri) someone had posted three striped colors as one flag in order:blue, white, red. I'm sure this was an accident, because AFAICT there isn't a large French population in rural Missouri. For goodness sakes it wasn't even Creve Coeur!
So while many US citizens might take offense at rather strange things while being insensitive to our allies, just take it as cluelessness.
