Re: Hey, the forum's been down for hours (again)
I've set up a crontab job to restart Apache every night at 2 AM Eastern Time. That should fix it.

Thanks for the report. Can you tell me approximately what time? For now I'll move the crontab job to 1 AM Eastern Time.

Server Down Issue
There are a couple possible causes for the server down issue:
  1. Occasionally someone accesses the site in a way that causes Apache (that's the process that actually handles webpage requests from clients) to hang.
  2. Someone knows an HTTP request or sequence of HTTP requests that cause Apache to hang.
Most of the hangs come late at night when activity is least.
Restarting the Apache service also seems to reset the MySQL service, so a deadly embrace in the MySQL code is another possibility. But though a deadly embrace is always something to fear, I don't consider it likely because this server problem first began during a period when I hadn't made a modification in literally months. But it is possible that there is some sort of MySQL issue that only became apparent as the number of messages in the database grew. We're around three quarters of a million now.
Please continue to let me know when this happens. If I can narrow a "server down" incident to a specific start time I might be able to track down which HTTP requests are causing it.

Thanks for the Updates
It's odd that the problem seems to be worsening just as I'm trying to fix it. Don't know what to make of that. Restarting Apache didn't seem to make any difference. I'll have to try something else. If anyone has any ideas let me know.

Re: Thanks for the Updates
The server is still up and Apache is still servicing other websites and, for example, this website's homepage. It's just not servicing anything that includes MySQL.

Re: A tiny but annoying quirk
This is already fixed in 5.0, I'll migrate the fix back to 4.0.

Re: A tiny but annoying quirk
Problem is fixed. It's a Javascript fix, you'll have to reload/refresh the page to see it. Just clicking on a link to EvC won't reload the Javascript.
AbE: Pardon, I was interrupted as I was releasing the new code. Code is released now.

This falls under the category of, "What was I thinking?" Thanks, everyone, for bringing this to my attention.
For those interested, I reversed the order of a couple Javascript function arguments, and I did it consistently everywhere. And forgot that the JS calls to this function are part of the message text recorded in the database for any message with images, so for messages before the change the arguments became in the incorrect order.
I should be able to write code to update the database to fix the function calls in the text of older messages, probably within the next few days.

I was having the same problem on Saturday. Yahoo was indexing EvC at the time, but not very aggressively, so I don't think that was the problem. I restarted the Apache server and that seemed to fix it.
This extreme sluggishness has been happening from time to time. A few times it was because someone was banging on EvC extremely hard, i.e., a denial of service attack (I add the IP address to the "no access" list and this fixes the problem), but other times I could find no reason and simply restarted the Apache server.
It might be related to a communication issue between the MySQL server (runs the database where all EvC information is stored, like messages) and the Apache server. Upgrading to newer versions might help, and if the problem becomes severe that is something I will try, but installing new versions of fundamental software like these is often accompanied by problems and/or incompatibilities, so I'll not take this course unless the problem becomes so severe that I'm forced to try this.

We didn't look loaded enough at 4:19 AM to be having any performance issues, but I have changed an Apache parameter (FcgidMaxProcesses: 20 => 8). We'll see if it helps.

Thanks for the info. I don't know if it will help, I'm not good at interpreting tracert's, and I don't know if the timeouts on their internal servers indicate a problem with those servers or with my server, but I've filed a ticket with the webhosting company.

The website is having a performance problem. Most requests are very slow. I'm investigating.
