I have never passed on the right. Ever.
I do it all the time.....

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Wow, a serious side of Dr. A. I'm impressed.
"Mr. McCabe thinks that I am not serious but only funny, because Mr. McCabe thinks that funny is the opposite of serious. Funny is the opposite of not funny, and of nothing else. The question of whether a man expresses himself in a grotesque or laughable phraseology, or in a stately and restrained phraseology, is not a question of motive or of moral state, it is a question of instinctive language and self-expression. Whether a man chooses to tell the truth in long sentences or short jokes is a problem analogous to whether he chooses to tell the truth in French or German. Whether a man preaches his gospel grotesquely or gravely is merely like the question of whether he preaches it in prose or verse. The question of whether Swift was funny in his irony is quite another sort of question to the question of whether Swift was serious in his pessimism. Surely even Mr. McCabe would not maintain that the more funny "Gulliver" is in its method the less it can be sincere in its object. The truth is, as I have said, that in this sense the two qualities of fun and seriousness have nothing whatever to do with each other, they are no more comparable than black and triangular. Mr. Bernard Shaw is funny and sincere. Mr. George Robey is funny and not sincere. Mr. McCabe is sincere and not funny. The average Cabinet Minister is not sincere and not funny." --- G. K. Chesterton

I had a feeling about that word "serious" when I wrote it, but a more apt choice didn't come to mind. And I like Chesterton so that was an entertaining consequence.

Very true Faith :-) Life would be dull indeed if we were all the same :-)
Back on the topic, I think that mobile phones have simply rendered more widespread the sorts of reckless idiocy we've always seen with drivers. I once passed a guy on a motorway, who was driving at about 70 mph, cup of coffee in one hand and some sort of cake in the other, whilst reading a broadsheet newspaper spread out across the steering wheel in front of him :-/
And they say men can't multitask...

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Dr Adequate writes:
This isn't really absolute in the way you're making it seem, is it?
Yes. I have never passed on the right. Ever.
...
But if I ever want to travel faster than someone in my lane driving ahead of me, I overtake on the left or I don't overtake at all.
Okay, so you're only talking about a specific type of passing situation, the one where you want to go by someone ahead of you. If you were in stop-and-go traffic on the freeway where lanes of cars are advancing randomly in fits and starts, I assume you wouldn't have any problem passing on the right.
How about this situation. You're on a highway, there are two lanes in your direction, and the speed limit is 60 mph. Someone oblivious in the left hand lane is going 40 mph. Everyone is moving to the right and going past her (ooh, a bit of profiling there, I seem to have assumed it's a woman). You would:
  1. Drive up along her right side, but then slow to her speed so as not to pass on the right, thereby causing a rolling traffic jam.
  2. Pull in behind her so as not to cause a rolling traffic jam.
  3. Pass her on the right.

I've seen all manner of things people do while driving. Men shaving with electric razors in the car. Women putting on makeup. People eating, drinking and reading.
The funniest thing I ever saw was a guy playing a trumpet while driving with playing music sitting on the steering wheel. Now THAT is what I call multitasking.

I think that clinches it - there is a God.

Oh, sure. It's one thing to keep with the flow of traffic, another thing to go round someone by changing lanes. That's what I mean by overtaking. Apologies for the ambiguity.
