The spam cleanup has been completed. I have temporarily disabled new registrations because they began registering new accounts while I was suspending and cleaning up after the old.
Admins please also note that I have temporarily made the spam threads forum inactive so that it doesn't clutter up the All Topics list.

He registered about 20 accounts and didn't use them all, so the one's he didn't use weren't suspended. I went through the list of last night's registrations and they all looked suspect, so I suspended the remaining ones that weren't already suspended.

Some other forums require admin approval of a registration before posting privileges are established. I am not sure what you would check to determine if they are a spammer or not (maybe their profile entries?). Perhaps restricting new members in some way such as only allowing 1 or 2 posts prior to admin approval, or not allowing posting to proposed new topics or other less restricted forums such as "suggestions and questions" or "coffee house."
I don't know, maybe it doesn't happen enough to be a concern but that was a helluva mess this morning - 20 pages of spam!!! Thanks for doing all the work it took to clean up! I also can't understand why this spammer would think that blasting the forum with hundreds of posts that we can't even read would tempt us to use whatever it was it he was selling HBDWhoever calls me ignorant shares my own opinion. Sorrowfully and tacitly I recognize my ignorance, when I consider how much I lack of what my mind in its craving for knowledge is sighing for... I console myself with the consideration that this belongs to our common nature. - Francesco Petrarca "Nothing is easier than to persuade people who want to be persuaded and already believe." - another Petrarca gem. Ignorance is a most formidable opponent rivaled only by arrogance; but when the two join forces, one is all but invincible.

We switched to having Moose approve registrations a couple years ago (the registration process can be modified through control panel settings), but registrations diminished, so we abandoned that to see if registrations would pick up again. I don't think they have, so if Moose wants to resume approving registrations then that would be fine.

I believe it was mostly driven by software, since they were posting faster and with more accounts than a single person could handle.

If it makes you feel any better I Googled some of the spam content while this was going on and it was showing up a several other unrelated sites.

I don't think they have, so if Moose wants to resume approving registrations then that would be fine. Even before this massive spam flood, the spammer to non-spammer ratio was pretty high. I suspended quite a few before they posted, although a lot of the recent spammers just had spam homepages and I suspect they never intended to actually post any messages. I'll set things to approval required, and will review things before OKing. AdminnemooseusOr something like that.

The more this site becomes a political site via the Coffee House, and the less it is a EvC as intended, the less interest it has for me.
Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge. Belief gets in the way of learning--Robert A. Sure, the topic does needlessly mock and insult Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and who knows who else, and yes it is another one of Greatest I Am's poorly thought out topics, but maybe someone could take some time to process the proposed topic, "Religions are fairy tales for adults"? Maybe vet the thing?
Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846) History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people. Martin Luther King If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions? Scott Adams

What has happened to all the Christian warriors who used to stampede across the Internet in giant herds trampling even the most atheistic bulletin boards? I can't believe they're just avoiding EvC Forum because of our awesome anti-Christian cattle-driving skills.

Tangle may be on the right track, but it's only part of the picture.
The pattern that I have seen play over and over again for the past few decades has been that the creationists joining the fray were not experienced veterans, but rather new recruits whose heads had just been filled with nonsense (eg, creationist PRATTs). These new recruits are either recent converts or kids who had been raised in the faith, but mostly new recruits, I would think. Of course, they are not prepared for the truth about their claims. After a few of these encounters, the creationist would eventually learn how worthless his claims are (though there do appear to be a small number who are incapable of learning). A few continue on in the fray, though knowing what claims or discussions to avoid, and some even switch sides after finding their creationist position to be false, but most of them simply leave the fray forever and some possibly even start on the path of losing their faith. So what are the statistics for new converts? Have they gone down? We do know that fundamentalist/evangelical churches are hemorrhaging their youth they had raised in the faith, such that they're losing 65% to 80%, leaving only one kid in five staying. Most of those youth leave religion altogether, making the unchurched a rapidly growing section of the population. Without their carefully-trained youth to take up the fight, all the creationists have are the new converts. And if there are far fewer new converts, then there will be far fewer "Christian warriors." So what are the conversion numbers like nowadays?
