Whats funny to me at least, is how prevalent smoking was in our recent past. I went on a airplane and I'll be, it has a arm rest ashtray!!! And whats with the "no smoking" signs on airplanes.
I love old silver screen movies and chuckle at the places people use to smoke. Which was everywhere. You were in the minority if you did not smoke. I saw a movie where the freaking Doctor lit a ciggie for his patient and then fired one up for himself.
When i was in highschool I janitored in a AFB office building and just about every single desk had a ashtray full of butts. Way before designated smoking areas.

Smoking
When my ex was in the Air Force (late 70s, early 80s) we could smoke in the movie theater; just no lighting up until the National Anthem was done.
I worked in the commissary and our registers had stools and ashtrays so we could sit and smoke while working.

Re: Anecdotal Report
I know this is from way back, but one thing I found out about is 'PG Free vap'. They use vegetable oil rather then proplene glycol because some people can not tolarate PG.
If you went back to smoking, you might want to consider PG free stuff.
What?!.. and change my habits in exchange for a couple of decades? Seems a bit risky.
I would certainly try any reasonable alternative to smoking that didn't involve some perception of personal sacrifice.
I can't remember now exactly but I think what I was using had a mix of the 2. One gives you the bite and the other gives you the visual smoke.
Unfortunately, my governments have all decided that it should be difficult for me to access the otherwise available options. No doubt that I could find it if I decided to but I haven't followed the product development since my initial experience.
It's a shame really. I buy gray market cigarettes because the taxes are unreasonable when I would gladly pay twice as much for a healthier option that actually satisfied.
It's a strange thing. I fully appreciate the irrationality of the habit and yet I remain captivated.

Since someone else revived the thread ...
I haven't read back through the posts, so this is probably a repeat of previous stuff. 6 years ago last month, I tried Chantix.
I quit the first week of the pills. I finished the course. My wife smokes all the time, but even with that, I still don't want a cigarette.
I know some people have side effects ... but if you can last the course, it might work for you like it has for me.

evidence over faith ... observation over theory

Iano's book recommendation
Iano posted way back in the thread --Message 13 --on the book The Easy Way To Stop Smoking by Allen Carr and insisted it really is easy, no struggle whatever, no cravings whatever.
I believe him because When I quit my two and sometimes even three pack a day habit after years of failure stopping and starting again, struggling and giving up, it was amazingly easy and from what Iano said it sounds like this book is a similar attitude changer to what I discovered on my own.
Far as I can tell nobody here took Iano's advice seriously. I wish somebody would and then report back on it.
You want something that doesn't feel like a sacrifice. This sounds like it. I'm sure there are always some people who are immune to any method but this has a great track record and really sounds worth trying,. You say you know smoking is irrational, but I have a feeling you rally have no idea until you read this book.
REMEMBER: no struggle whatever, no cravings whatever. None.
