What's wrong with you?
I keep trying to have an honest discussion with you, and all you do is hurl insults at me and everyone else who might disagree with you. I'm genuinely perplexed. Edited by Jon, : No reason given.Love your enemies!

I don't intend to insult. If you feel insulted, I apologize.
It's just that I really have no inclination to have an argument with my younger self. It's like trying to have a convo with a young earth creationist. I know they're wrong, but since I used to be a young earth creationist myself I know it's impossible for me to convince them that they're wrong. So, why have a convo at all if everything I say will hit a lead wall? I wish you the best on your endeavor in life.

Also, don't tell Microsoft, but I'm retired now, so I'm no longer entitled to the Microsoft Office suite that employment at my former company qualified me for. Moving the license to a new install would be detected. Next time I upgrade the OS or purchase a new computer I'll have to pay for a Microsoft Office license. Look into LibreOffice (used to be OpenOffice) freeware. They also have beginning cad and project management software. Curiously I have an old version of AutoCad (fully licensed but haven't paid for updates) and it won't run on Windoze 7 or higher (so I need XP alt boost to use): I got it when new owner drove the company I was working for into the dirt and fired the design staff -- they had no idea of the value of the software and were going to throw it away. They are now bankrupted history. But I need a new laptop, and I would like Ubuntu 14 (trusty tapir) as the primary\sole OS, and that means seeing if I can Wine and dine Autocad to work on a virtual OS window ... (and I would like to use touch screen). Then maybe I can let XP go. Enjoyby our ability to understand Rebel☮American☆Zen☯Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. Look into LibreOffice (used to be OpenOffice) freeware. OpenOffice is still there; I just downloaded their most recent version the other day. It looks more like LibreOffice is a separate package built from OpenOffice source. I'm gonna have to download it and see what it's all about.Love your enemies!

The technical term is "fork". The Open Office project was forked maybe 3 years ago, and most linux distros have been going with the Libre Office branch of that fork. I've forgotten (or maybe I never knew) what was the disagreement that led to a fork. Come to think of it (this is "evcforum"), what we have here is common descent with change.Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

It comes down to Sun owning OpenOffice and Oracle buying out Sun. A lot of people were less than happy with Sun, and even less happy with Oracle.

OpenOffice is still there; I just downloaded their most recent version the other day. It looks more like LibreOffice is a separate package built from OpenOffice source. I'm gonna have to download it and see what it's all about. Yes the original was Open Office, and it split into Libre Office and Apache Open Office according to my sources. My experience is that LibreOffice is very close to the older OpenOffice, but I don't know what the other version is like. It does word documents, spreadsheets, slide shows, draw and all can be saved in microsoft formats just as all microsoft documents can be openned and used in Libre\Open Office programs. The Open Office Suite used to be bundled in Ubuntu, and now the Libre Office Suite is bundled in the new versions. I'd like a more robust cad program (hot key shortcuts to commands) from them, and I'd like a more robust project manager program, but I can get by with what I have on those. Let me know if you think the Apache OO Suite is better? Enjoyby our ability to understand Rebel☮American☆Zen☯Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. The one I downloaded the other day was called Apache OpenOffice.
I don't think the Oracle one exists anymore...Love your enemies!

Let me know if you think the Apache OO Suite is better? I can, but my opinion won't count for much. I don't use the programs regularly enough to be really familiar with them. There was something I was trying to do with OO a couple of years back that I found to be a pain in the ass compared to Word, and I sort of abandoned using it for day to day stuff. I wish I could remember what that was, because I'd give it a try in the new versions. Downloading Libre now; I'll let you know my first impressions. But, I will tell you this: Apache's was about 130 MB and Libre is 214; so there's a difference right there.Love your enemies!

Some quick comparisons. LibreOffice seems to be a little bit more advanced.
As always Oracle is the villain. http://www.howtogeek.com/...ference-and-which-should-you-use LibreOffice vs. OpenOffice: Why LibreOffice Wins | Datamation Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts "God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.

... There was something I was trying to do with OO a couple of years back that I found to be a pain in the ass compared to Word, ... Haven't tried Libre yet, but one of the areas in OO that I had some difficulty with was doing "track changes" on legal documents under negotiations, so that you could see who modified what in the documents. OO could do it but finding the formating commands was not as user friendly.
Downloading Libre now; I'll let you know my first impressions. But, I will tell you this: Apache's was about 130 MB and Libre is 214; so there's a difference right there. Hopefully that translates into usable functionality. Thanksby our ability to understand Rebel☮American☆Zen☯Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. I am using them both now. When I installed Apache's version, I looked through everything to make sure it wasn't pulling any stunts. I wish I would have done the same with Libre, because it redid all my file associations .
I don't think I use enough special features to really notice a huge difference between the two. One thing, though, is that I notice neither give me the option of inserting asterisks, daggers, etc. for footnotes. I don't get why that is absent. I do like how Libre has some frequently used things in the toolbar (like special symbols). So it wins me over on that. Remember that excel formula you helped me with a while ago? Well, I loaded that document into both of these programs and I liked Libre better here too. I have several categories for expenses, and with MS and Libre, I can enter just the first letter of the category, the rest pops up, and I then Tab to the next cell. Apache doesn't let me do that for some reason. I either have to type the whole thing in or use the mouse to click over to the next cell. It really slows things down. Based on these little things, I think I'd use Libre over Apache. But I still can't get over them both lacking the asterisks for footnotes... it's so strange. ABE: For comparison, Apache requires 650 MB of disk space, Libre 1.5 GB, and MS (according to their website) 3.0 GB! Edited by Jon, : No reason given.Love your enemies!

I use Libra regularly. Stable and no monkey business. I Make do with it, but far prefer MS Office, but that may mostly be (not certainly not all) from 20 years of familiarity with Office.
But then there's the cost thing. JB
