This is dog bites man "news" Of course he hates this show.

Its stated mission is to "provethrough sound scientific researchthat liberal bias in the media does exist and undermines traditional American values" and to neutralize the perceived liberal bias of the mainstream media.

Their respective theories of how these processes work are not facts
Taq's orginal complaint seems more on point now. I'm going to take another listen to that section of the show. But only after I watch next weeks show.
Still it is an attack point for the Discovery institute and those Liberal Bias Media Research folks and their 'evolution is just a theory' cannard.

Comment about the first episode
About some criticism of the show.
I participated in a blog discussion a couple of weeks ago in which a number of people jumped to the defense of the Catholic Church after the first episode. In essence the arguments were that Giordano Bruno was a dirt bag and was killed for blashphemy rather than anything uncovered by science. Galileo, I was told was only under house arrest, which wasn't so bad, and thus he was not a martyr for science. Besides Galileo was wrong about some thing or other he said about the moon.
I did not see those arguments in time to respond, but looking back on it, I don't think the comments need a response because they are no defense at all. Burning someone alive because they are a dirtbag? Placing someone under house arrest for the rest of their lives after you force them to recant science under threat of death is cool? That's your effing defense?
Okay, I've vented here, cause I can't vent there. I'm better now.

Re: Comment about the first episode
I got home late and tired, so I only had time to watch half of the third episode.
Tyson talk about the history of astronomy probably had Creationist more twisted than the entire evolution episode. Tyson talks matter of factly about tens of thousands of years of the man developing the ability to recognize patters, determine the passage of the seasons, and to identify false patterns and blame them on deities. By the time he got to the point of telling us where comets came from I'm sure Fox and National Geographic were fielding calls.

Re: Isaac Newton
I would have to watch the little preview videos they had on the website to verify, but I think that I remember them mentioning Kepler. Please note, this was only about a one minute teaser video.
Well, the show had plenty of Newton (in cartoon form) and Kepler got his mention. We even got to see some of Newton's irrational and vindictive side along with his genius. But Halley was the real hero of the piece, which ultimately was about demystifying the origin of comets.
Tyson does lots more treading on Creationist toes in this show with no apology whatsoever.

Re: Isaac Newton
It is certainly the producers' and director's decision to focus more on the history of science than the actual science, but I was hoping for a more science-centric focus.
I'd like that kind of show too, but I'm not the least surprised that we are not going to get it with Cosmos. I'm pretty sure that about 8 on the entire east coast would watch it.
If you want something short of a university course, but more meaty than Cosmos, I think you're into the realm of stuff you have to pay for. Drs. Filipenko, Tyson, Green, etc. all have those kind of video courses for sale.

Re: Episode 4
It's interesting history and all, but would love to see more science.
Last week I re-watched episode 1 of the original series. (Let's not call it TOS). My impression was that it too was primarily history, with lots of show and tell. However, in that episode Carl did show us exactly how Eratosthenes, in 240 BC determined that the earth was spherical and measured the circumference to within a couple of percent.
I understand why the show cannot be filled with mathematics. But perhaps just a little detail on one or two items. Anything more and people are just going to switch off.
That brief mention of YEC seemed like a pretty thorough pounding to me. Nothing new for any of the posters here, but still a pretty explicit labeling of the idea of a 6-7000 year old universe as ridiculous. What struck me was that the debunking could have easily be omitted. It seems like the producers and Tyson are picking a fight.

Re: Episode 4
and it's worthwhile to show some reasons regarding why that is.
Well, Tyson is doing some of that, but the poking at creationist goes well beyond showing why the scientific method has been successful. For example, in addition to telling us about how long light has been traveling to us from different places in the universe, Dr. Tyson also stuck in some superfluous zingers about what our ancestors look like at the time. For example, while talking about a galaxy millions of light years away, he mentioned that our ancestors, at the time the light we see left that galaxy, weighed a few kilograms and sported a tail.
Surely the tail comment is particularly grating to some segment of potential viewers. No reason for that kind of off-the-cuff stuff other than chain yanking and/or nose thumbing. Not that there is anything wrong with that!

Re: "Your Inner Fish"--3-part series on evolution hosted by Tiktaalik co-discoverer
I think that this one has surpassed it and taken the number one overall spot up until this point.
I agree. The best episode so far. Plenty of history, but in the end, enough science too! (And the best science of all... physics.) . Definitely a keeper. First time I've ever wanted a big screen TV.

Re: the crazies are out, and fumbling at the mouth
Parents cite one kid became completely enamored with the show during a terrifyingly supernatural event linked with Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s narrative explaining the God of the Gaps theory.
There is likely quite a bit of truth in the above statement. I'll bet the kid does like the show. Now how many people would find that to be a tragedy?
Several weeks ago, citizens accused Tyson of using his Cosmos program to forward other agendas, not limited to a ‘homogay’ agenda, wizardry/haroldry, astrology and other vehemently anti-Christian teachings.
Really? Astrology? Witchcraft? What show are these fools watching? What's gay about the show?
Nothing else can get secession talk started the way a black man does without even trying. Is someone watching Fort Sumter?

Re: Inner Fish
Is that right? If I do lots of calculus will my children have bigger brains?
Of course the Lamarkian explanation is going to be wrong. More likely that if you are included to be doing calculus, you've got the big brain gene. But if you try to force it, you just get a head ache and some kids who struggle with Algebra.
There has to be some kind of selection criteria for big heads. RAZD will tell you that it is predominately sexual selection, but no woman in her right mind would want to deliver big headed babies. .
I think it is a mixture of sexual selection and the fact that math skills are valuable life skills.

So the selection is obviously not for head size but for some other factor, and head size has come along for the ride as a result.

Re: NCSE comments
You know, I was just wondering about that. If you believe that the earth is 6000 years old, what do you make of the stars and the apparent age of the universe?
Perhaps you have forgotten, but Creation Science is a cottage industry for the express purpose of solving these kinds of riddles. The explanations range anywhere from merely saying that you are using 'evilutionist asumptions' to tired light, to complex, general relativity denying cosmologies with earth at the center of the universe and a giant gravity well. Past discussions I've had here have involved creationist citing crackpot theories where light has different speeds coming and going, alternative relativity theories and just bad science.
And if that is not enough, you can misinterpret real science papers.
Yes, you can sometimes entrap the more unimaginative of the YECs who are willing to stick to something like a consistent set of laws for the universe. Mindspawn comes to mind. But creationism is way more slippery than that.

Episode 8 is as good as any episode with the possible exception of the Newton episode. I don't want to spoil any of it, but the content is primarily astrophysics with no gratuitous pokes at Creationism, although YEC proponents still won't like it.
Definitely family friendly. Invite a tweener to watch with you!
