The study was produced in an institution, by a graduate student mathematician ("PhD candidate in Applied Mathematics/Public Policy").
That institution received support from NASA, NSF and probably a lot of other organizations.
I would hesitate to call this a case where NASA predicts anything. And I would like to see a critical analysis of the model used in the research.
I think some headline writer has jumped the shark here.
