I doubt that there's any ideal weighting system that will make the ratings "fair". In a democratic process, people are going to use their own standards for making a choice. It comes down to accepting how they vote or not letting them vote at all.

Life is like a Hot Wheels car. Sometimes it goes behind the couch and you can't find it.

Is it possible to find all of the posts that I've cheered and jeered? I'm much too nice to jeer people but I think maybe I did jeer somebody once - maybe I accidentally clicked the wrong button, yeah, that's it - and I'd like to undo it.

Why do we need some "popularity" rating? What does it accomplish? Ego?
I think there should be a "What does ringo think?" rating for every post.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all members are created equal.

Something Faith said gave me the idea that we should have an irony rating for each post. The scale should go from one to, say, a million.

As I see it (today - I didn't bother to go back to remind myself how I saw it yesterday) Percy needs to make the rating system generic - all things to all men, not just tailored to this forum. It would be nice if it was as sophisticated as some of the suggestions but in the end the vast majority of (other) people are just going to use it as a popularity contest.
No matter how complicated it becomes, I don't think you can measure quality. Keep it simple: like or dislike, maybe a running total of likes and dislikes for all posts.

I remember the good old days when I could work my rating back up toward 10 by saying something clever.

Does a higher rating make you feel more profound? (Or just funny? )
I don't know. I am interested in who cheers what but there doesn't seem to be any way of telling why they cheered. If I say two things in a post (and sometimes I do), which one was appreciated?
As for "caring' about the member rating, if you're only posting for the sake of posting you might as well do your mental masturbation without wearing out your keyboard. I like to have some feedback.

I still think Posts Of The Month nominations should be counted - and counted as more valuable than just your common Cheer.
I think Posts of the Month are thoroughly irrelevant.

I would think encouraging members to make well-thought posts should be a goal that gets reflected in the left side panel.
Months go by without any nominations. Hence, they're irrelevant to many of us.
I have a short attention span and a little dyslexia so I tend not to read long posts. Posts of the Month may have some value for long posts but the Cheer/Jeer system works better for short posts. If the forum software is intended for broader use - i.e. outside the EvC club - I suspect that the general public would make far more use of Cheer/Jeer than Post of the Month.

We often hear creationists complaining that they don't get a fair shake at EvC. Well, let the bells ring out and the banners fly because that situation has been remedied - EvC has now become Backwards World, just as the creationists wished. When I make a post my rating goes up and when I get a cheer my rating goes down.

Perhaps right after the total lifetime posts, you could put total lifetime "likes"....
That's what I would suggest. Then we can make up our own math.

What do people think of making the denominator the total number of messages in the last n days?
I don't care what somebody's rating is in an n-day period. I'm only interested in n = forever.
