Re: Ideally, a (+) for a very good message, a (-) for a very bad message
I so wish i could jeer your post.
Having a cheer without a jeer option is some kind of church lady social engineering manoeuvre and has no place on a forum where ideas should flow without restriction. The cheer/jeer option is akin to a vote and what kind of voting system only allows positive votes? The kind that they have in North Korea that's what kind. Next thing you know it will be banishment for lack lustre clapping.
Agreed.

and I don't want no mutual admiration society either.
What I like is the idea of a link so that hitting a POTM button displays POTM and makes an automatic posts and who did it (with an option to make a short comment).

This *will* happen one day. I felt I was getting close at the end of 2012, but then I unfortunately had to dedicate 2013 to real life work, but I'm back in the saddle now. I actually have a little help now - someone is making minor bug fixes and looking into connections to social media.

Do it!

Do you have any evidence for this claim?
Just kidding. Seriously... good for you. I still think it's a good idea.
In fact, my wife mulls over starting a webpage/blog/forum thing up every now and then. If she ever seriously gets into it, I would like to purchase a copy of this forum software. As long as it's not, like, and industrial price of $1000 or something like that, anyway.
I actually have a little help now - someone is making minor bug fixes and looking into connections to social media.
Go somebody!
I will offer cheers! And I wouldn't jeer you, even if it was an option.
I will also offer much advice for things that will take months to program, and then I won't help with the programming in any way!!

I think there should be a "What does ringo think?" rating for every post.

Not quite, as it can still go up until you reach the 10 max. Roxrkool is at 9.9 for now.

Maybe so but not for our Coyote. He's stuck ... stuck I tell ya ... stuck like a fly on whatever it is flies get stuck on.
No matter how many people he POs to get a lower number - ain't gonna work!
(Such an evil feeling, feels so good.)
Reminds me of the joke:
Masochist giggles with glee "Hurt me! Please, hurt me, hurt me."
Sadist says with an evil grin, "No."
Masochist stares a second, giggles again and says, "Thank you!"

Simplest:
Maybe just show the career aggregate total cheers and the moving total of cheers over the last 100 posts. Or last 100 days even.
By having the career aggregate cheers, even Faith would chalk up some good numbers to compare to a newbie evolutionist. Of course it would be easy to divide the career cheers by the career posts and Faith wouldn't do so well then.
But there may also be the problem Bobby Fisher complained about vis' a vis' the Russians intentionally drawing games against each other. For example, I could always cheer my brother and he could always cheer me, and we'd both be artificially inflated, relative to the rest. There could be roving cliques of mutual cheering spoiling the numbers.
I dunno.
In my croquet league I had an ongoing total season average and a Last 8 average, but the last 8 was weighted 8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, so that the most recent game counted 8 times as much as the game from 7 games before. Games older were scrolled off in the Last 8 calculation. I also kept records for who had the highest Last 8 during the season. This does not seem usable here.
Over in the Expecting Rain Discussions forum they seem to have Total Post thresholds that get you titles like Silver Member, Titanium Member, and so on, that seem to reward sheer volume - although I think the admins over there give nods to those members who do a lot of the volunteer work of the board. Not a good system, but then the individual posts cannot be cheered or "liked". And they don't have the Reply Threading that works so well here.

Re: Ideally, a (+) for a very good message, a (-) for a very bad message
I would have preferred to keep displaying the member rating number, but unfortunately it included the past (-) input even though the (-) was not a current option.
Right now, everyone's rating that I have seen has been at a 10.0.
It might as well not exist at all.
I've been advocating from way back, that the (+) option be in the hands of the members and the (-) option be only in the hands of the admins.
Get on it already. Or go back to what it was if you ain't ready.
This current thing is worthless. Do something.

The most recent change I had made, was to limit the effective window to 30 days rather than the original 90 days. Now, all the (-) are no longer in the window. I was under the vague impression that the member rating system would work somehow, even with only (+) votes. Such does not seem to be the case.

Making the (-) vote admin only is outside of my powers. It requires a software change by Percy.
I have tried to have a discussion of message/member ratings in the "Private Administration Forum", but have had essentially no input from the other admins, and none from Percy/Admin.

Ouch. Sorry about that.
Switching from +/- to + only won't yield accurate values until all the old values flush out of system. Changing the window to 30 days won't affect the older values still in the system.
Ideally the system would respond instantly to changes in the control panel settings, but it would take a very long time to recalculate all ratings for all members (think "scan through all messages"), so the algorithm is incremental - it works by updating the member's rating every time someone rates one of his messages.
I've put it on my todo list to examine the algorithm to see if I can make improvements that will allow it to instantly reflect changes to control panel settings.
